Southeast Division title on the line: 'Burgh at AP, Friday, 7 p.m.

TROY -- Three weeks remain in high school football’s regular season, but tonight in Averill Park, the Lansingburgh Knights and the Warriors will more than likely square off in Section II’s Class A Southeast Division championship game.

Lansingburgh (1-0, 3-1) and Averill Park (2-0, 3-1) have defeated common opponents Gloversville and Scotia-Glenville and both have lost to New York State’s No. 3-ranked team, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (2-0, 4-0). The Spartans sit tied atop the Northwest Division with Amsterdam (2-0, 4-0).

The reason why tonight’s game is so important to both teams is the appeal of home field advantage in the postseason that goes to the No. 1 seed, as well as the odds of keeping Burnt Hills off the schedule until the Class A Super Bowl, should everything go according to the seedings.

"This could be the game to win," said Lansingburgh senior two-way lineman Mark Tracey, pictured above. "If we don’t win this one, there is a pretty good chance that they’re going to come out with the top seed and get the home field advantage the first week of the playoffs. So yeah, it’s definitely extra motivation."

Bishop Maginn (1-1, 2-2), which lost at Averill Park 49-20 last week, is currently in third place in the Southeast Division. Scotia-Glenville and Mohonasen, both 0-4 overall, occupy last place.

"We’re just trying to get better each and every week," said Lansingburgh head coach Al McNall. "We’re a little nicked-up injury-wise and we’re dealing with PSAT review classes, but that’s nothing that nobody else is dealing with too.

"We’re looking forward to it and (Averill Park) Coach (Zach) Gobel does a good job out there. They look pretty comfortable in his offense now. They’re growing into it."

Averill Park senior fullback Tyler Dunworth (44 att., 514 yds., seven TD) has emerged as one of eleven Section II running backs with 500-plus yards on the ground through four games. Gobel has changed the Warriors’ offense this year from a no-huddle spread scheme, which he ran during his first year at the helm in 2009, to an option-based double wing set.

The Warriors have won three games so far, matching their season total for 2007, ’08 and ’09. The team last finished with a winning record when it went 7-3 and appeared in the Section II Class A Super Bowl in 2005.
The Averill Park players have chalked up most of their success to a new attitude developed over the winter months, which has everyone on the team competing hard in practice.

"Our recon ‘D’ is giving us great looks," Dunworth said after Friday’s victory over Maginn. "Matt Joe, Brian Hardy, and Kevin Otty, they’re playing amazing on recon and they’re just helping us out a lot."

Lansingburgh, on the other hand, has been a superpower this decade, having played in a Section II championship game seven times since the 2002 season.

Junior running back Marcus Little (44 att., 377 yds., four TD) and senior Anthony Fogarty (34 att., 305 yds., four TD) have carried the load so far out of the backfield for the Knights. First year quarterback, junior Carlos Grillo, has also impressed, completing 25-of-43 passes and throwing for 411 yards.

Behind a veteran offensive line, two of the players that have shone the brightest for McNall this season are backup running backs Ohmeire Jones and Adae Turner.

"If anything, our guys behind our line have picked it up. All of them," McNall said. "Ohmeire Jones had a big game against Cohoes and Adae Turner, he’s had some pretty good runs when we put in him in there to spell Marcus and Anthony.

"The guys that this year were expected to chip in and expected this year to show up and get ready in case they had to latch on to the reigns, they’ve come along pretty well."

Lansingburgh (1-0, 3-1)

State police release Tamarac vs. 'Vliet robbery suspect photos

CLUMS CORNERS -- State Police have released surveillance photographs of three men they believe stole belongings from visiting Watervliet High School football players during a weekend game at Tamarac High School.

Several iPods, a wallet, cash and other personal items were taken from the visiting locker room during the game, which was played early Saturday afternoon on the fields of the school on Route 2.

The photos released Thursday, taken from surveillance cameras outside the school, depict three white males police believe are in their early 20s exiting the building. State Police urged residents to note the clothing they are wearing: one appears to be wearing a red t-shirt, another a white one and the third a grey short-sleeved shirt.

"They don’t appear to be students," Trooper Maureen Tuffey said. "Not recent ones, at least."
The visiting locker room was not locked during the game, which the Tamarac Bengals won 13-12 in a come-from-behind victory.

"It was insult to injury, I guess," Watervliet coach Erick Bernard said of the thefts. "You lose a game and then you get robbed."

Bernard said six or seven athletes discovered some of their belongings had been stolen, including at least five iPods.

To make matters worse, he noted the team’s running back, Ryan Manning, broke his clavicle during Saturday’s game and is out injured.

"It was kind of a tough day, overall," Bernard said.

He doesn’t imagine the athletes will get their items back, but he said catching the culprits will bring some resolution to the issue.

Anyone who recognizes the men pictured or has other knowledge of the larcenies is asked to contact the State Police Loudonville barracks at 783-3211.

Troy High volleyball remains undefeated in the Big 10

TROY — Thursday evening, the Troy High School girls volleyball team remained undefeated in the Big 10 Conference – a streak that has stretched for nearly three seasons – defeating Amsterdam, 3-0 in the Clement H. Zotto Gymnasium at Troy High School.

Troy High senior Sylvia Sorriento serves a ball in the third game against Amsterdam Thursday night in a Big 10 Conference match in Troy. The Flying Horses won, keeping their unbeaten streak, which dates back to 2007, alive in league play. (Photos by Will Montgomery - The Record).

Senior Sylvia Sorriento provided 22 service points – seven were aces – and six kills in the victory and Rachel Martin chipped in with 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Fellow senior Bridget Haggerty smashed seven kills for the Flying Horses (6-0, 11-0), who won by game scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-17.
Troy setter Mary Gallagher dished out 27 assists.

Troy High's volleyball team huddles up around second-year head coach Christine Danz during a break in the action Thursday evening.

Undefeated Big 10 Conference regular season champions in 2008 and 2009, the Flying Horses last lost a league game in 2007, when Sorriento, Martin and Haggerty were freshmen.
Amsterdam (0-6, 0-8) remains winless in 2010.

High school football: Week Five, a look ahead

La Salle (1-2, 1-3)
at Shaker (3-0, 4-0)
Fri., 7 p.m.
Liberty Division

About La Salle: The Cadets find themselves on the outside looking in at the playoff picture in the Liberty Division after losing to Colonie last week. La Salle is fifth in the division. The top four teams will receive postseason berths. Kevin Koberger rushed for 95 yards on 16 attempts a week ago. That is as close to a 100-yard rushing performance as the Cadets, who have produced some of the area’s finest running backs this decade, have come to the century mark in 2010.
About Shaker: The Blue Bison just keep finding ways to win, using three interceptions from Chris Landers to topple Niskayuna in Week Four. Shaker also welcomed seniors Conor Alund and Chris Sherwin back to the team after they had missed the first three games with injuries. Alund rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown on 24 attempts and Sherwin caught a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Notable: Shaker last won five games in one season in 2003. La Salle has won at least six games in a season every year sine 2003. These teams last met on Sept. 25, 2009, with La Salle winning, 40-7. These teams have met in the regular season each of the last five years and La Salle has won all five games by a combined score of 165-51.

Shenendehowa (3-0, 4-0)
at Christian Bros. Acad.(2-1, 3-1)
Fri., 7 p.m.
Empire Division

About Shen: The Plainsmen are enjoying the two-headed running attack of Bronson Greene (69 attempts, 525 rushing yards, six touchdowns) and Queensbury transfer Tony Fusco (48, 404, 6). Shen’s defense hasn’t been too shabby either, allowing just 31 points through four games. 21 of those points were surrendered in last week’s 35-21 victory over Schenectady.
About CBA: The Brothers’ defense came up huge last week in the Spa City, holding the Saratoga Springs offense at bay in a 27-2 victory. CBA does not highlight any one single player on offense, as a large group of running backs split the carries under first-year head coach Joe Burke. Trey Williams (37, 283, 5) is the leading rusher, but Carter Sherman, Cody Zappone, Nick Antoinette Joe O’Hagen and Casey Crotty have been major contributors.
Notable: Depending on what Ballston Spa does at Guilderland, CBA could force a first place tie in the Empire Division with a victory. Shen won last season’s regular season matchup, 34-0, which was head coach Brent Steuerwald’s career win No. 300. The Plainsmen have won the past five games in the series by a combined score of 153-17.

Troy (4-0, 4-0)
at Saratoga Springs (2-2, 2-2)
Fri., 7 p.m.
Non-division

About Troy: The Flying Horses have outscored opponents 188-0 this season. In 2009, Troy High posted five straight shutouts (and a 24-quarter scoreless streak) during the regular season. Shatiek Lewis (41 att., 490 yds., 7 TD) and Jordan Canzeri (52 att., 398 yds., 8 TD) have again proven themselves to be one of Section II’s top running back duos.
About Saratoga: The Blue Streaks’ offense sputtered last week, as the defense could muster just two points in a loss to CBA. Running back Jesse Spencer gained 145 rushing yards on 23 attempts in Week One, but has been pedestrian (40 att., 155 yds. zero TD) in three games since.
Notable: Troy played a Class A schedule in 2008 and ’09, so these teams last met on Oct. 22, 2004, with Saratoga winning, 24-6. Troy returns to Liberty Division action next Friday at Niskayuna before closing out the regular season at home on Oct. 16 against Shaker.

Tamarac (3-0, 4-0)
at Greenwich (3-1, 3-1)
Fri., 7 p.m.
Class C, North Division

About Tamarac: The Bengals outlasted Watervliet last week, 13-12, on the strength of Reed Meehan’s extra point kick with 1:58 remaining in the fourth quarter. Tamarac last won five games in a season in 2008. The most recent five-win season before that? Try 1992, when the team also finished 5-4. The Bengals have turned to the air since senior running back Nick Feldmaier went down with a fractured fibula. Junior quarterback Nick Casale is Section II’s No. 2 leading passer in terms of yardage and Tyler Larvie, despite just one catch last week against Watervliet, remains the area’s top receiver.
About Greenwich: The Witches responded to a Week Three loss against Hoosick Falls by blanking Mechanicville in Week Four, 26-0. Running back Tyler Pruiksma has gained at least 104 yards on the ground in every game except the Hoosick Falls game. Pruiksma, with seven touchdowns and five two-point conversion runs, is one of 13 players in Section II to have socred at least 50 points this season.
Notable: Traditional Wasaren League rivals, these teams have not recently met on the gridiron. Tamarac, currently in a first place tie with Hoosick Falls in Class C’s North Division, will not play the Panthers during the regular season. The Bengals travel to Corinth in Week Six before closing out at home against Mechanicville. Tamarac has made just two post season appearances in school history 2008 and 1983, the Bengals’ one-and-only Section II title-winning campaign.

Stillwater (1-2, 2-2)
at Mechanicville (1-2, 1-3)
Fri., 7 p.m.
Class C, North Division

Notable: Both teams are two games behind Lake George in the win column for the fourth and final playoff berth in the North Division, so this game is unlikely to play a role in the postseason hunt. Still, it’s one of the biggest football rivalryes around as the next-door neighbors battle for control of the Indian Bowl. Mechanicville won all five meetings between 2005 and 2009 by a combined score of 119-44. Stillwater last won the Bowl in 2004, eeking out a 13-12 victory over the Red Raiders.

Cambridge (3-0, 3-0)
at Rensselaer (3-0, 3-0)
Fri., 7 p.m.
Class D

About Cambridge: Despite a bye in Week Three, Matt Best (50 att., 606 yds., six TD) remains the No. 7 rusher in Section II in terms of yards gained. The Indians are also expected this week to have the services of wide receiver Jesse Lybert, who had broken his right ankle over the summer.
About Rensselaer: The Rams received a bye in Week One, but that hasn’t stopped senior quarterback Tim Foust from ranking as one of the Section’s top passers. His 423 yards passing, 10 touchdown tosses against one interception, and 21-of-35 completion percentage have kept Rensselaer on top of the Class D standings for the third straight season.
Notable: As the only undefeated teams remaining in Class D, this could be a potential Super Bowl preview. Both teams have bounced between Class C and D in recent years. The last time they met was on Sept. 25, 2005 in Cambridge, a game the Indians won, 50-8. Cambridge defeated Rensselaer twice during the 2004 season, 33-0 and 41-8.

72nd annual Everett T. Grout Memorial Run preview

Ballston Spa's Max Groves, La Salle's Denis Hurley and Hurley's mother, Anne, regroup after the Section II cross coutnry championships at Saratoga Spa State Park in 2009, Hurley, who battles asthma, finished sixth overall in that race. Ballston Spa and La Salle will be among the teams in the field at the 2010 Grout Run Saturday in Schenectady. (Photo by Tom Killips - The Record).

SCHENECTADY — The 72nd annual Everett T. Grout Memorial Run in Schenectady’s Central Park will be held yet again on Saturday. And while the Grout Run may not be as big a draw as it was in the past, quite a field will still line up at the starting line in 2010.

Some of the best cross country runners in the Empire State will descend on the Electric City, as 24 teams ranked in the latest New York State Sportswriters Poll will compete.

“It’s the tradition of it,” said meet director Ed Menis, who also serves as the head cross country coach at Schenectady High School. “It’s the big meet of the year and it sets up for the final push toward the state meet. And it’s a fast course, mostly on roads, not grass.”

One of the favorites will be the Shaker High boys team, which was ranked No. 1 in the New York State Class AA poll and was slotted No. 16 nationally in a recent Powerade Fab 50 poll on espnrise.com.

Shaker’s top runners include Jon Vallecorsa, Mike Libruk, Christian Delago and Casey Gilboy, all of whom finished in the top 10 in Shaker’s own Ed Springstead Invitational on Sept. 10.

The winner of the Springstead meet, Niskayuna’s Marshall Pagano, will also be running in the boys Division I race at the Grout Run.

Divided into three divisions, the six varsity races on the 2.7-mile course are scheduled to begin at 11:10 a.m. Division C features Class C and D schools. Berlin (No. 7 Class D) and Fonda-Fultonville (No. 1 Class C) are among the teams to watch on the boys side.

Freshman-level races on a 1.7-mile course begin at 9 a.m.

Larger schools are divided evenly between the Division I and Division II groups. Menis’ main task in grouping the teams is to split up as best he can the Suburban Council teams and the Section I rivals that see each other on a regular basis.

Broadalbin-Perth’s girls and boys teams, ranked No. 5 and No. 7 in the Class B polls, respectively, will compete in Division II, giving the Patriots a chance to run against student-athletes from much larger schools.

“In some meets they’d be placed in a smaller division,” Menis said. “It’s a chance to push through before state competition and move up for a test.”

One of the oldest meets in the nation, the Grout, having begun in 1939, remains one of the most prestigious. 31% of the squads in the 78-team field (boys and girls combined) hold a position in the New York State polls.

Other meets have popped up over the years, including the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx and the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Invitational at Saratoga Spa State Park, which have also drawn teams from out of the area.

Queensbury, one of the traditional entrants in the Grout Run, decided not to take part in Schenectady’s meet this season. The Spartans traveled to Pawling last week for the Green Mountain Lake Invitational and will head to the Manhattan Invitational next weekend. They declined to fit the Grout into their schedule for the sake of not traveling three weekends in a row.

A number of Suburban Council teams, including the Saratoga Springs, Columbia and Bethlehem boys and girls, as well as the Shaker girls, will compete this weekend in the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C.

While the Grout Run may not be as popular as it once was, Menis believes it is still vital to the health of the sport across the state and serves as a connection to its history. Schenectady native Ray Trail was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame last month and he set the scholastic indoor and outdoor mile records and won individual national championships for now-defunct Nott Terrace High School in 1935 and 1936.

“In the old days, it was the only place to run,” he said. “It was the meet. For any nationally-ranked team - Schenectady was winning national championships - and for teams that wanted to really compete at the state meet, it was the place to be. There is just a lot more competition for invitationals now.”

Fordians blast past Hornets in CHVL soccer action

Waterford-Halfmoon's Connor Noel heads a ball in front of Heatly's Alex Heffern during Monday's CHVL boys soccer game at Green Island's Veterans Memorial Stadium. (Photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

GREEN ISLAND -- Connor Noel raced back up the sideline after scoring his first goal of Monday’s game against the Heatly School’s boys soccer team, saw his mother and asked, "Did you see that?"

Unfortunately, she missed his first goal, but saw her son, a senior midfielder on the Waterford-Halfmoon team, add another a few minutes later in a 7-0 Central Hudson Valley League victory for the Fordians at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Waterford (5-0-0, 6-2-0), ranked No. 6 in last week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class C poll, has scored 25 goals and allowed just one in league play through five games.

Noel, who had previously played on defense but has shifted to the midfield to spark the Waterford offense, doubled his season goal total Monday and now has collected four goals and five assists.

Fre Breen added one goal and two assists and Peter Guenette, Jeff Ippolito, Mark Cahrenger and Matt Berthiaume added single tallies for the Fordians. Waterford goalkeeper Joe Hilton stopped seven shots to record the shutout.

Waterford-Halfmoon junior striker Fre Breen (above) is one of the area's most exciting soccer players to watch.

"It’s just good teamwork," Breen said of the key to Waterford’s success. "We all live near each other and we’re always together. It’s a family."

Heatly (1-3-1, 1-3-1) received 14 saves in net, many of them spectacular, from keeper Zach Mason.
The Hornets had a pair of great scoring chances five minutes into the first half, but Hilton made the initial save and corralled the rebound to keep Heatly off the board.

A season ago, Waterford won the Section II Class C championship and defeated Voorheesville in the Class CC/C playoff, advancing to the New York State Class C semifinals, losing to Section I’s Marathon, 1-0.
Waterford has come back strong in 2010, but a few players, Noel included, have had to move positions to make up for some of the losses from the 2009 squad.

"We lost four players from last year and we’re still kind of moving people around," said Waterford head coach Fred Engelmann. "So we’re trying to cover positions and sometimes you think you know what you got and sometimes it doesn’t work. I went through three weeks with two guys in the center mid and it just wasn’t happening, so we put two new guys in there and moved them elsewhere and things have been much better."

Waterford's Garrett Archambeault (20) attempts to control the ball in front of Heatly's Cody Rogers (8) during Monday's game in Green Island.

Neither Heatly nor Waterford field a football team in the fall, so soccer is the biggest game in town. That is just fine with the players, who enjoy the challenge of living up to the program’s legacy.

"The time I moved here, that’s what my dad told me. Soccer is big here because they don’t have football," Breen said. "That’s how I like it. I like it very much here."

Waterford won New York State Class D titles in 1992 and 1996. The Fordians were Empire State runners-up in 1994.

"That’s how we grew up. We grew up with our travel coach, who was the star on the state championship team, so that’s something we always strive for," Noel said. "Hopefully we get that this year."

"It’s a good group of kids and they play well and they know how we want to play," Engelmann said. "I think we’ll do well. Hopefully we go as far as we went last year."

The Fordians finished with an 18-3 record in 2009 – the team has lost non-league games to Troy High and Cairo-Durham in 2010 – and the team is hoping its depth and experience can carry it through the rest of the regular season and beyond.

Waterford's Matt Berthiaume races Heatly's Adam Greenwood for the ball during Monday's CHVL soccer game. Berthiaume scored the final goal of the game late in the second half.

"It really gets easier because I’m playing with the same players every year," Breen said. "It’s much easier and fun. It’s all about fun. It’s not always about winning and losing."

"Sometimes it’s about winning," interjected Noel.

"Yeah, it’s about winning, but it’s about having fun at the same time," Breen laughed.

WATERFORD 7, HEATLY 0
Waterford (5-0-0, 6-2-0) 2 5 - 7
Heatly (1-3-1, 1-3-1) 0 0 - 0
Scoring: W-H: Connor Noel 2-1, Fre Breen 1-2, Peter Guenette 1-0, Jeff Ippolito 1-0, Mark Cahrenger 1-0, Matt Berthiaume 1-0, Alex Koscielniak 0-1.

Girls Academy set to name inaugural Hall of Fame class

Albany Academy for Girls will recognize five talented individuals who have gone on to great success in college and beyond at the Inaugural AAG Alumnae Association Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Breakfast this Sat., Oct. 2 at 8:30 a.m. in the AAG Lower School Gym (located at 140 Academy Road in Albany).

The inaugural Hall of Fame class includes Ruth Miner (Class of 1911), Marion Mooers Tietz Lamar (Class of 1947), Jennifer Riitano Levy (Class of 1993), Carrie Bolduc (Class of 1995), Ashley Gersuk (Class of 2001) and the 1995 varsity lacrosse team.

Ruth Miner is best known for her role as the first President of the AAG Athletic Association upon its creation in 1909. She played hockey, tennis and basketball during her time at AAG and was a strong competitor. Ms. Miner earned the nickname “Sport Miner” at Wellesley College and was one of just six women to graduate from Albany Law School in 1919.

Marion Mooers Tietz Lamar was a standout athlete at AAG and head of the Athletic Association during her senior year. She went on to excel in lacrosse and field hockey at Sargent College of Boston University – selected for the U.S. Women’s Lacrosse Team and the Northeast Field Hockey Team. Ms. Lamar taught physical education for 20 years in area schools and officiated basketball for 29 years and field hockey for 48 years. When she retired from officiating at the age of 68, she received special recognition from the U.S. Field Hockey Association.

Jennifer Riitano Levy excelled at soccer, basketball and lacrosse during her time at AAG and served as a successful coach of the AAG Varsity Lacrosse Team. After attending Babson College and playing on the Women’s Lacrosse Team, she took Team deBeer (part of J. deBeer and Son, Inc.) from an unknown name in the women’s lacrosse industry to being the No. 1 provider of women’s lacrosse gear in the country. Ms. Levy currently serves as Vice President of the Lacrosse Industry Council, is the Director of Women’s Sports at Brine and has been selected to serve on the U.S. Lacrosse’s Board Development Committee.

A three-sport athlete at AAG in soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse, Ashley Gersuk was recognized as a four-time Central Hudson Valley League All-Star; she also led the Varsity Lacrosse Team to the New York State Championship in 2001. Ms. Gersuk continued her passion for lacrosse at Northwestern University – helping to pioneer the lacrosse program from inception to a No. 1 national ranking; during her senior year, Northwestern won the first of five consecutive national championships. Ms. Gersuk was chosen to represent her team at the White House where she met then President George Bush, and presented the team’s gift to him during the Rose Garden “Champion’s Day” ceremony. She is currently the Partner & CEO of WomensLax.com LLC, a sports marketing and event management company.

Carrie Bolduc was captain of the AAG Varsity Soccer Team that finished third in the Central Hudson Valley League during her senior and was a member of the Section II, Class D runner-up team along with numerous other accolades. In addition, Ms. Bolduc served as captain of the 1995 Varsity Lacrosse Team and was one of two selected from the region as a first team All American. She went on to play lacrosse in Division I programs at Temple University (competing in the NCAA Final Four) and Syracuse University (winning the ECAC Championship). She later served as a successful lacrosse coach at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Farmingdale State College – recognized as Coach of the Year in 2009.

The 1995 AAG varsity lacrosse team had an outstanding season, finishing with a 15-2 record and advancing to the state finals – a first for AAG lacrosse.

High school football: Week Four in review

CLUMS CORNERS — Reed Meehan wears two hats during the fall sports season at Tamarac High School, which is to say sometimes he wears a helmet and sometimes he does not.

A senior captain on the Bengals’ soccer team, Meehan also serves as the place kicker for Tamarac’s football team, which is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1983. Meehan booted the game-winning extra point with 1:58 remaining in Saturday’s 13-12 non-division Class C triumph over Watervliet.

Tamarac High School senior Reed Meehan (above) is the place kicker on the Bengals' football team and the captain of the soccer team. (Will Montgomery vidcaps - The Record).

“I’ve been playing soccer my whole life. I know when I come out on the field I have to calm down,” Meehan said of his approach to the all-or-nothing aspect of kicking an extra point. “I calmed down and I made that kick.”

Meehan, a forward on the soccer team, scored three goals in the Bengals’ season-opening victory over Granville. Hoosic Valley, however, defeated Tamarac 2-0 on Oct. 14 to snap the Bengals’ 30-game winning streak in Wasaren League action.

On the football field, he has connected on 11 extra points.

“It’s great. I’ve always been a part of the soccer team and we were always good,” said Meehan. “Now it’s great to see the football team doing good. I’m glad it’s my senior year and I’m glad I’m part of this football team.”

Healing from a broken right wrist, Meehan had his right hand wrapped in a protective foam sheath for Saturday’s game, a necessity since the cast had just been removed.

It’s his right leg, however, that has the Tamarac football players glad that he is part of the team.

“He holds his own in practice and he’ll go and make a play when he needs to,” said junior quarterback Nick Casale (pictured, above). “He’s got a golden leg and we’re just going to keep that going.”

“He comes out and gives us his all,” said senior wide receiver Nick Newell, pictured below. “He gave us touchbacks today. It’s just amazing. He has a golden leg. It’s incredible.”

Major matchups in Week Five: In a season that has been defined by blowouts, Week Five should provide Section II football fans with plenty of exciting and important games.

In Class AA, Christian Brothers Academy (2-1, 3-1) plays host to Shenendehowa (3-0, 4-0) in an Empire Division showdown Friday at 7 p.m. Troy (4-0, 4-0) heads to the Spa City for a non-division game Friday against Saratoga Springs (2-2, 2-2). The Flying Horses have outscored opponents 188-0 through four games.

Averill Park (2-0, 3-1) will host Lansingburgh (1-0, 3-1) Friday in a Class A Southeast Division game with the winner likely to wind up division champion.

Tamarac (3-0, 4-0) heads to traditional Wasaren League rival Greenwich (3-1, 3-1) in a Class C North Division matchup Friday night. Both teams are chasing Hoosick Falls (4-0, 4-0), which Saturday heads to Hoosic Valley (0-3, 0-4), the only team in Section II yet to score a single point. Stillwater (1-2, 2-2) will take the short trip to Mechanicville (1-2, 1-3) for the annual battle for the Indian Bowl, this time under the lights Friday night.

Last but not least, in what looks like a Section II Class D Super Bowl preview, Rensselaer (3-0, 3-0) plays host to Cambridge (3-0, 3-0) Friday at 7 p.m.

The Record's power polls
Class AA
Team, League, Overall, Last Week
1, Troy High, 4-0, 4-0, 1
The Flying Horses have outscored opponents 188-0 through four games. Troy posted five straight shutouts during the 2009 season. This week, Troy travels to Saratoga Springs, which scored just two points in a 27-2 loss against CBA.
2, Shaker, 3-0, 4-0, 2
The Blue Bison haven’t blown out their opponents like Troy, but Shaker keeps finding a way to win under first-year head coach Greg Sheeler. Shaker hosts La Salle in a must-win game for the Cadets Friday night at 7 p.m.
3, Shenendehowa, 3-0, 4-0, 3
The Plainsmen are cruising toward an Empire Division title, but Friday’s game at CBA will go a long way in the division’s playoff seeding. Bronson Greene and Tony Fusco have proven to be a potent two-headed attack out of the backfield.
4, Ballston Spa, 3-1, 3-1, 4
The Scotties thumped up Bethlehem on Friday night, 35-6. Ballston Spa plays Empire Division games the next two weeks before playing Nisky of the Liberty Division in a crossover game in Week Seven.
5, Christian Brothers Academy, 2-1, 3-1, NR
The Brothers made a pretty big statement on Friday night, holding defending Section II Class AA champion Saratoga Springs to two points in a 27-2 victory. CBA isn’t afraid to spread the wealth on offense, as at least five players receive regular carries out of the backfield.

Class A
Team, League, Overall, Last Week
1, Burnt Hills, 2-0, 4-0, 1
The Spartans traveled to head coach Matt Shell’s alma mater, Gloversville, Friday night and posted a 41-0 decision over the Huskies. Brandon Beatty and Evan Nusbaum ran for at least 100 yards apiece.
2, Lansingburgh, 1-0, 3-1, 2
The Knights didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard last week against Scotia-Glenville, but a 21-0 final score was good enough for a Southeast Division triumph. The division title will likely be on the line Friday night in Averill Park.
3, Amsterdam, 2-0, 4-0, 3
The Rugged Rams have been perfect so far in 2010 following a down year in 2009. Amsterdam gets a test when it hosts Queensbury on Friday.
4, Averill Park, 2-0, 3-1, 5
The Warriors have bounced back well from a 42-0 defeat at Burnt Hills in Week Two and are 2-0 in a pair of Southeast Division games. Can Tyler Dunworth run wild Friday night on the Lansingburgh defense?
5, Queensbury, 1-1, 3-1, NR
Like Averill Park, Queensbury also responded well after being shut out by Burnt Hills, beating South Glens Falls 26-14 in Week Two.

Class B
Team, League, Overall, Last Week
1, Albany Academy, 2-0, 4-0, 1
The Cadets fared well in their first full game without quarterback Hunter McCarthy, defeating Cairo-Durham 47-8, Zay Richardson added 240 rushing yards to become the first Section II back to break the 1,000-yard mark in 2010.
2, Schalmont, 2-0, 4-0, 2
The Sabres have outscored opponents 199-26 through four games. That’s an average final score of 50-7. Joe Paskevich has added a passing attack to the offense that Schalmont did not have in 2009.
3, Schuylerville, 2-0, 4-0, 3
The Black Horses have proved their worth in their first season in Class B, vaulting into a first-place tie with Schalmont in the West Division. Those teams appear set for a title-game showdown in Schuylerville in Week Seven.
4, Ravena, 2-0, 4-0, 4
The Indians are still undefeated after four weeks, but they’ll face a tough Reinfurt Division challenge at home from Hudson High Friday night.
5, Hudson, 0-1, 2-2, NR
The Bluehawks lit up the scoreboard in a 47-31 victory over Class A’s Mohonasen on Friday night. That type of win could propel Hudson to a hot streak at the end of the regular season in the Reinfurt Division.

Class C
Team, League, Overall, Last Week
1, Hoosick Falls, 4-0, 4-0, 1
Tanner Williams caught seven passes for 77 yards and ran the ball six times for 66 yards in Hoosick Falls’ 34-6 victory over Granville in Week Four. Senior QB Mike Brewster added 115 passing yards for the defending Section II champs.
2, Chatham, 4-0, 4-0, 2
The Panthers received 309 rushing yards and five touchdowns from Josh Keyes in a 42-13 victory over Voorheesville one of the preseason favorites in Class C, Friday night.
3, Fonda-Fultonville, 3-1, 3-1, 4
The Braves blanked Canajoharie 19-0 in Week Four, looking to keep pace with Chatham in the South Division. Fonda makes the trek to the Collar City Friday night for a South Division game against Catholic Central.
4, Tamarac, 3-0, 4-0, 5
The Bengals are 4-0 for the first time since 1983, thanks in large part to junior quarterback Nick Casale, who has completed 38-of-73 passes for 779 yards and five touchdowns. Tamarac travels to Greenwich Friday night in a Wasaren League…make that North Division…clash.
5, Greenwich, 3-1, 3-1, NR
The Witches’ only loss this season came at the hands of North Division leader Hoosick Falls. Greenwich blanked Mechanicvile in Week Four, using 183 rushing yards from Tyler Pruiksma in the win.

Class D
Team, League, Overall, Last Week
1, Rensselaer, 3-0, 3-0, 1
Timmy Foust passed for four touchdowns and Tyler Bishop ran for a score in Rensselaer’s 33-0 victory over winless Salem on Saturday. Senior running back Phil Sayers added 145 rushing yards in the triumph.
2, Cambridge, 3-0, 3-0, 2
The Indians will get their first real test on the Class D level since dropping down from Class C this Friday at Rensselaer in what could be a Section II Super Bowl preview. Matt Best ran for 262 yards in Saturday’s romp over Fort Edward.
3, Whitehall, 2-1, 2-1, NR
The Railroaders move into the Class D polls after Fort Edward lost at Cambridge in Week Four, 49-8.
