CASTLETON — The list of things the Maple Hill High School boys soccer program has accomplished over the years is lengthy.

The Wildcats have won 21 regular season league championships, 17 Section II titles and three times have finished the season as the best Class C team in New York State.

Maple Hill (19-1-0, No. 10 Class B, New York State) looks to cross another achievement off the list today when it plays in the first Class B regional game in school history against Section VII champion Northeastern Clinton (12-6-0) at 7 p.m. at Plattsburgh High School.

“Maple Hill’s tradition in soccer is really high and our expectations are really high,” said junior midfielder Paul Ancin after Saturday’s 1-0 Section II championship victory over Johnstown. “Our goal was to get to sectionals and win it and even though we stepped up to Class B, we did it.”

Northeastern Clinton, the No. 3 seed in the Section VII tournament, upset No. 2 Beekmantown in the semifinals, 2-0 and then knocked off No. 1 seeded Plattsburgh High, the No. 4 ranked team in the state at the time, 2-0, in the championship match.

It was the sixth consecutive year Plattsburgh and Northeastern Clinton had met in the Section VII championship game. Plattsburgh had won four straight title matches over Northeastern Clinton prior to the Cougars’ 2010 triumph.

Northeastern Clinton is paced offensively by Jamie Davison (14-6), Dylan Carter (6-3) and Sean Harrigan (5-1). Goalkeeper Josh Rabideau has made 97 saves and allowed 20 goals while posting nine shutouts.

Maple Hill’s leaders are Steve Sepowski (10-8) and Jake Yager (10-4). Paul Ancin and Ron Radley have added four goals apiece. Netminder Derek VanAlystne has allowed nine goals and posted 13 shutouts.

Although the Wildcats found themselves four students over the threshold for admittance to Class B (Maple Hill had 309 students in grades nine through 11, according to a Bureau of Education Data Services figure) they do not feel like they are in over their heads playing against larger schools.

“We want to go as far as we can,” Ancin said. “I think we have the potential to go all the way and our group is really motivated to win states.”

The winner of Wednesday’s match faces the Section X champion Potsdam (10-5-3) in a regional final this weekend. Should Maple Hill win, the regional final game would be played at Guilderland High School, with the date and time to be determined.

COLONIE — The biggest save in Saturday’s Section II Class B boys soccer championship game wasn’t made by Maple Hill goalkeeper Derek VanAlstyne.

It was defenseman Matt Palmer who saved the day for the Wildcats.

Johnstown’s Kurtis Sprung passed to Kieran McCoy in front of the net and VanAlstyne came charging out to make the save. The ball, however, trickled away and rolled slowly toward the goal but Palmer, with a diving, sprawling kick save, punched the ball away from the goal mouth.

Paul Ancin scored a goal on a rebound off a direct kick by Jake Yeager and that was all Maple Hill would need to post a 1-0 victory at South Colonie High School.

“They got on a breakaway and it was about to go in the net. I just kept running like we’ve always been told,” said Palmer, a senior captain. “Don’t stop until you hear the whistle. I went back and kept it out of the net and the rest of the team kept it out of the net for the rest of the game.”

It wasn't the first time Palmer had made a play like that this season.

"We played Hudson a few weeks ago and it was the same thing, rolling in front of the net and I kicked it out," he said. "I’ve seen it before, but that was (Saturday's save) a little bit closer."

No. 1 seed Maple Hill (19-1-0), which has won 11 Section II Class C titles and four more at the Class CC level since 1988, captured its first Class B championship in school history.

It was the 17th Section II championship victory for Maple Hill head coach Dan Gillespie, who has been at the reins since 1976 (he also coached the team in 1974), which puts him alone in first place in Section II history in terms of sectional titles. His 21 league championship seasons and 538 career victories are also Section II records.

"This is our first time in Class B, so this is kind of a big deal for us to be up here," said Palmer. "To win sectionals the first time, it means a lot to us as a team to really pull it together at the end."

Maple Hill, ranked No. 10 in the latest New York State Class B poll, has advanced to the a regional semifinal game against Section VII champion Northeastern Clinton Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Plattsburgh High School. The winner of that game faces the Section X champion Potsdam (10-5-3) in a regional final.

“That (Palmer’s save) was crucial to save that goal so we could still be tied going into the second half,” said Ancin, a junior midfielder. “That really motivated us in the second half to get a goal and win this game.”

With less than six minutes expired in the second half, Maple Hill’s Jake Yaeger took a direct kick from the left side of the Johnstown net. The ball sailed over a sea of players and found Johnstown goalie Alex Simon near the far post. Simon, however, could not corral the ball and Ancin, in the right place at the right time, pounced on the loose ball for the Wildcats’ only goal.


“Jake had a good ball over the top and it was on the corner of the box,” Ancin, at left, said. “The goalie came out and I just kind of kicked it through. I looked up and the next thing you know, it was in the back of the net.”

The Wildcats had previously defeated No. 10 seed Johnstown, 1-0, in championship game of Maple Hill’s Fall Sports Tournament on Columbus Day.

Johnstown (10-9-1), which finished in sixth place in the Foothills Council regular season standings, upset No. 7 Coxsackie-Athens in the preliminary round and topped another Cinderella, No. 15 Stillwater, in the quarterfinals. Then, in the semifinals, the Sir Bills scored in the waning seconds of regulation and in overtime to defeat No. 11 Hoosick Falls, 2-1.

“Honestly, I’ve got a couple other sectional patches, but I got them from being pulled up to play on varsity after playing JV,” Palmer said. “This is the first one that I feel I really earned.”

Maple Hill has won three state titles in school history. Of course, none have come at the Class B level, at lest not yet.

“We want to go as far as we can,” said Ancin. “I think we have the potential to go all the way and our group is really motivated to win states.”

• Notes: Maple Hill recorded three quick shots following Palmer's save, but none obviously went in.

• A good number of Maple Hill shots were wide and right of the net, a problem that has plagued the team all season long. "We’re starting to understand how to play offense," Gillespie said. "We’ve missed a ton of shots all year. We outshoot somebody, 26-2 and miss them like mad. We’re trying to work it up a little bit more. Sometimes we’re a little too fancy, flicking it up there and nobody’s there."

• Quotes from the notebook: "I told the kids this might be the only, ever time we get a B championship in the whole history of our school because we’re going back down to C next year and everybody’s population is dropping," Gillespie said.

TROY — The Troy High School boys soccer team had done a tremendous job all season of keeping the sheet clean – preventing other teams from scoring – but Ballston Spa didn’t play Monday’s Section II Class AA quarterfinal by the Flying Horses’ script.

Ballston Spa’s Connor Preece scored on a rebound shot in the game’s first minute. Troy’s Will Valle countered with an equalizing goal one minute after that, but Ballston Spa’s Kevin Marin answered in the next minute in a thrilling offensive outburst to open the game.

Marin scored again early in the second half to complete the Scotties’ 3-1 victory at Troy High School.
Ballston Spa (9-5-4), the Suburban Council’s No. 4 seed, advances to a Section II Class AA semifinal against either Bethlehem or Shenendehowa (those teams played Monday - a score has yet to be reported) Thursday at South Colonie High School. Game time is 7 p.m.

“We came into this game as a win-win,” said Brandon Wilson, at left, Troy’s senior striker and captain. “We won the Big 10 and we won our first sectional game. We knew Ballston Spa is a great team and I play with a couple of kids on that team (in the high school offseason). We looked out and came to give them a fight. All we hope is that we earned their respect.”

Troy (15-1-1), the Big 10 Conference regular season champion and No. 1 seed, outscored opponents 52-6 this season, posting 13 shutouts in the process. The team won its first league title in 16 seasons and won its first postseason game since 1988 by defeating Columbia in a penalty kick shootout last Thursday.

Monday, Ballston Spa’s mix of physical power and speed buried the Flying Horses early.

From the opening kick, Ballston Spa marched toward the Troy net. Bobby Strang stopped the Scotties’ initial shot, and Ballston Spa hit the crossbar in the ensuing chaos before Precce sunk the first goal into the net.

Troy was not down for long, as Valle blasted a right-footed shot past Ballston Spa’s Evan Mendez to tie the game. Marin, however, headed in Ballston Spa’s second goal just a few minutes after Valle’s tally, which was all the Scotties would need to advance.

“They have a full roster of 11 guys out there that are fast and have great touch and good skill,” said Troy head coach Mike Murnane. “ They play in a league of fairly evenly-matched teams throughout.”

Strang finished with 13 saves. Mendez made three and did not have to stop a single shot in the second half.

Brandon Wilson, who has verbally committed to play at Siena College next fall, was aware of what the Flying Horses would be up against in Ballston Spa because of the top-notch travel soccer he plays in the high school offseason.

“It’s more physical. The speed of play picks up a lot and they go to the ball harder,” he said. “It’s hard, and I’m not downing any of the other Big 10 teams, but it’s hard with our strength of schedule to come in to a first or second-round game and pick it up when they’re playing top-ranked teams all year.”

Troy played just one non-league game all season, defeating Class C’s No. 1 seed, Waterford-Halfmoon, 1-0. Still, that was a far cry form what the teams in the Suburban Council face every single game all season long.

Murnane hopes the memory of the 2010 season inspires success in the program for years to come.

“Hopefully this puts a good spark in the youth in Troy and it gains some interest and sticks around a while,” he said. “I have a two-and-a-half year old who’s going to be going to the district, so I have a while before I’m going anywhere.”

• Notes: Troy allowed as many goals in this game - three - as it had allowed in its previous 16 games, 13 of which were shutouts. Troy opened the season with 11 straight shutouts, allowed one goal in each of its final regular season games and played Columbia to a 0-0 double overtime draw in the opening round of the playoffs before winning in a penalty kick shootout.
• Brandon Dory made a great save just before halftime, which kept Troy's deficit at 2-1.
• Ballston Spa's James Cowie hit the crossbar midway through the second half.
• I asked Troy High head coach Mike Murnane about what it's like to coach against the Suburban Council in the postseason, especially when teams are limited to 16 regular season games by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. There are some solutions - playing a classification-based schedule like the football teams do - but it looks like the Suburban/Big 10 breakdown in the Class AA brackets will continue in the future.
• "As far as classification play, absolutely. It would make any of the questions about seeding and whose league is better than whose, it would eliminate that," Murnane said. "It would be based on the competition you faced during the year, not figuratively who has the stronger schedule and who should be protected and who not. We’re not starting a revolution here, but it would be nice to see some change. Basically, what’s the best thing for the soccer players in the AAs?"
• "The purists would probably like to keep the leagues," continued Murnane. "I’m sure the Suburban is very happy because when you’re on top and things are going your way, change isn’t what you’re looking for. Us guys in the Big 10, us, Albany, La Salle, for sure, and CBA has had some great teams that have made runs, the top teams in the Big 10, it does hurt to not face competition throughout. Not to take anything away from our league, but there are down years and there are years with parity. The years where there have been parity, you see where teams come out with more from the regular season."
• Brandon Wilson will be playing his college soccer at Siena, which has both the Saints and the Flying Horses excited.
• "I see the heart and skill in the JV. I’ll be around," Wilson said. "I’m going to school close around here, so I’ll be around and helping them out a little bit."
• "It’s great that he’s staying local," Murnane said. "I know next year we’ll be taking a bus over to watch a couple of Siena games, for sure. I’ve known Brandon, I remember when he was in fifth grade, talking to his PE teacher about him. I used to play soccer at RPI with him when he was in sixth and seventh grade, got to know him. same with his brother Sean, and Shafi (Kabir). It’s been a long relationship built up with those guys and we keep moving them along and keep the franchise growing."

TROY — Keeping a clean sheet has been the name of the game for the Troy High School boys soccer team all season.

Bobby Strang took care of that in spectacular fashion Thursday afternoon in a Section II Class AA preliminary round game against Columbia.

Strang, Troy’s junior goalkeeper, made nine saves in regulation, two more in the first overtime and one in the second overtime as the teams played to a scoreless draw.

In the penalty kick round, Strang shone the brightest when the pressure was greatest. Strong stopped all four penalty kicks he faced and Jordan Schroeder and Mekhaldi Rafik scored penalty kick goals as the Flying Horses posted their first Section II playoff victory since the early 1980s at Troy High School.

“This is something we’ve wanted sine the first day,” Strang, at left, said of snapping the school’s postseason losing streak. “We didn’t have it until we beat Albany and then we were all focused on this. This was the biggest thing for us.”

Troy (15-0-1), the Big 10 Conference regular season champion and No. 1 seed, has outscored opponents 51-3 this season. The Flying Horses allowed one goal apiece in each of their final three regular season games, but Strang literally saved the day Thursday afternoon.

“Bobby? What else can you say?” said Troy head coach Mike Murnane. “That was just outright amazing. Not letting a ball touch the back of the net all day? That’s just unbelievable.”

Murnane, who played for Troy in the 1990s, could not remember exactly Troy’s last postseason win, but places it in the 1981-83 range.

Although neither team could score in regulation or in a pair of overtime periods, it was not for a lack of offensive chances.

Schroeder, who was the hero for Troy High on Monday, scoring his first goal of the season with five seconds remaining in regulation in a 2-1 victory over Albany High that clinched the Big 10 title outright for the Flying Horses, had the golden foot again Thursday afternoon.

Troy’s first player to shoot a penalty kick, Schroeder beat Morrison to the high corner on Morrison’s right.

“We had one practice where we had a penalty shoot-off and I got by the third round and coach said, ‘OK, you’re going to be the penalty kicker,” Schroeder said. “I thought he was joking. So, since then, I’ve always had it in my mind, ‘go to my left.”

“I couldn’t look. I knew if I watched, I knew I would either become very happy or very sad,” Strang said. “I just waited for the kick, waited to hear if it hit the net, hit the post or hit glove. I couldn’t stop there because we missed two of them. I had to keep going. I had to keep working.”

Troy will host Suburban Council No. 4 seed Ballston Spa (8-5-4) in a Class AA quarterfinal Monday at 3 p.m.

“It’s amazing. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world right now,” said Strang. “It’s unbelievable. But I don’t know how we’re going to deal with it, because we haven’t seen anybody else do it.”

“It’s really awesome. We were looking online at the blogs and stuff and a lot of people didn’t think we could do it,” Schroeder, at right, said. “They thought the Suburban teams were going to crush us. It feels really good to prove them wrong.”

• Notes: Columbia looked like it played a highly defensive style in the first half, content to keep Troy off the board rather than take any offensive chances itself. Since Troy had the wind at its back and Columbia goalkeeper Alex Morrison had the sun in his eyes in the first half, it wasn't a bad idea at all.
• Early in the second half, Columbia rattled off three quick shots in the first five minutes, but Strang obviously saved them all.
• Troy had a ton of set-piece shots off throw-ins and corners, but the wind wreaked havoc with their long-throw strategy. 
• Here is the penalty kick play-by-play:

• 3) Troy's Will Valle kicked it toward the far right post, but Morrison made a sprawling, bobbling save to keep it out of the net.

• 6) Columbia's Peter Browne goes to his left, but Strang is there to make a sprawling palm save.
• 7) Troy's Shafi Kabir hits the crossbar, giving Columbia once last chance.
• 8) Columbia's Tanner Chester goes to his left, but Strang is there again to make the game-winning save.
• Although Troy advances to the next round of the playoffs, it goes in the book as a tie for both sides - the first time Troy didn't win a game outright this season. I think they'll take that, though.

TROY -- For the first time in 16 years, the Troy High boys soccer team can claim as title: Big 10 Conference champion.

Jordan Schroeder, who had not scored a goal all season, hit the back of the net with five seconds left in regulation as the Flying Horses posted a 2-1 victory over Albany High Monday afternoon, clinching the Big 10 regular season title outright over the Falcons.

"This is just crazy. My adrenaline is pumping like crazy," said Schroeder. "We had some opportunities, especially in the second half, and we started to get a little frustrated because we weren’t putting anything through, but we finally got one. It’s a tremendous feeling. This is a great way to win the league. I couldn’t dream of a better way to win it."

With the win, Troy (14-0-0 Big 10, 15-0-0 overall) clinched a perfect regular season and its first Big 10 championship since 1994. The Flying Horses have been dominant all season, outscoring their opponents by a combined margin of 50-3.

"It’s simply been a remarkable season so far and these kids deserve all the praise in the world for this," Troy head coach Michael Murnane said. "We set the foundation last year by finishing second in the league and this year we set a goal of taking that next step and we achieved that."

"Albany gave us a tough game last week (also a 2-1 Troy victory)," Murnane said. "Our schedule has really helped us get ready for sectionals. We’ve had our three toughest games of the season - the two with Albany and one against La Salle - as our final three games of the regular season. That helps us build up momentum and gives us a taste of how tough the playoffs are going to be."

"We set our goals high for this season and our first thing was to win the Big 10," Schroeder said. "It’s great to get that done. Now we have to turn our focus to the playoffs and prepare to step it up even more. It’s going to be a great challenge and a lot of fun."

It's going to be an exciting week ahead. Here is a partial list of events to watch. Did we miss anything?

Sunday: The Section II field hockey brackets will be released. Check back for more details here on Sunday.

Monday: A pair of regular season championships will be on the line.
The Cambridge girls (10-2-1, 11-3-1) travel to Schaghticoke to take on Hoosic Valley (11-2-0, 13-2-0) in the Wasaren League finale. Hoosic Valley, which has never won a Wasaren League regular season title in school history, can clinch first place outright with a win or tie.

In Troy, the Troy High boys (13-0-0, 14-0-0), who have allowed just two goals all season, host Albany High (12-1-0, 14-1-0) in the Big 10 Conference finale. Troy can clinch its first regular season championship since 1994 with a win or tie.


Tuesday: The boys and girls soccer brackets will be released, which is always an exciting day. I will post those up in Bracketmaker as soon as I can get them on the site Tuesday.

Also, the Section II girls tennis tournament wraps up Tuesday at Sportime in Schenectady.

The top four seeds in the singles tournament will square off Monday afternoon in semifinals..

ALBANY — One streak ended, but another endures for the Troy High School boys soccer team.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Troy allowed its first goal of the season, as Albany’s Andreas Moukassa scored the game-tying goal off a corner kick by Stefano Sainato.

The Flying Horses didn’t let that feeling last too long, as Sean Wilson made a long throw-in with fewer than two minutes to play, finding twin bother Brandon Wilson, who headed in the go-ahead goal just before halftime.

Troy High goalkeeper Bobby Strang made 11 saves, including a stop on Sainato’s direct kick attempt with 1:28 remaining in regulation, as the Flying Horses posted a 2-1 Big 10 Conference victory on Charlie Leigh Field at Bleecker Stadium.

Troy (12-0-0, 13-0-0), still undefeated, has outscored opponents 47-1 this season.

“I knew that was going to happen,” said Strang, a junior, pictured at right. “The streak of shutouts, it’s not important to me. In fact, it helped us. At halftime we were very calm because we knew, hey, we had given up a goal, but we had a lead.”

In the game’s eighth minute, Troy’s Erik Vink-Lainas scored off an assist from Wayne Russell to give the Flying Horses an early lead.

Albany (11-1-0, 13-1-0), which has outscored its opponents 53-7 this season, responded just over 20 minutes later with Moukassa’s equalizing goal. The team responded joyously, knowing it had snapped Troy unscored-upon streak.

The Flying Horses responded with their set-piece offense that has served the team well all season long. Sean Wilson’s 30-yard throw-in pass right in front of the net nearly found Brandon Wilson’s forehead on the fly, allowing him to tap in the game-winning goal with his head.

“Ever since I’ve been playing soccer, I’ve had a really, really long throw,” said Sean Wilson, a senior, pictured at left. “We use our throws to our advantage, like another corner kick. I throw the ball into the box and the defense doesn’t know what to do. Brandon is about 6-foot-4 and that really helps in there.”

“He knows where I’m going to be and he knows where to throw it,” Brandon Wilson, pictured below right, said. “It’s kind of a twin thing. He’s been throwing it like that since he was 14, and I’ve always been on the end of it, so it paid off tonight.”

Troy plays at crosstown rival La Salle Institute (4-8-0, 5-9-0) Saturday at 6 p.m. before closing out the regular season at home against Albany on Monday at 4 p.m.

Albany next plays at Christian Brothers Academy (1-10-1, 1-12-1) Saturday morning.

Should both Albany and Troy win Saturday, Monday’s game will determine whether Troy will clinch the Big 10 regular season title outright or settle for a co-championship with the Falcons.

A co-championship will lead to a coin toss to determine seeds in the Section II Class AA postseason brackets. The Big 10’s No. 1 seed will face the Suburban Council’s No. 9 seed in an opening round game. The No. 2 seed will host the Suburban’s No. 6.

The Wilson twins have been four-year varsity players for the Flying Horses and hope to cap their senior season with an elusive Big 10 soccer title for Troy High, which last won a Big 10 title in back-to-back seasons in 1993 and 1994.

“My first year on the team, we lost a sectional game 10-0,” said Brandon Wilson. “The second year, we were up to around .500 and last year we had a great season with just the one league loss to Albany. We’ve been making progress every year.”
