Tigers & Black Horses in all-upset Class B semifinal

The look on Cohoes' Gary Nelson-Gill's face (left) says it all as he celebrates with Mark Gallerie (r) after Saturday's 57-45 upset of No. 2 Tamarac in the Section II Class B quarterfinals at Hudson Valley Community College. Nelson-Gill scored 25 points for the Tigers in the victory. (All photos by Mike McMahon - The Record).

Nelson-Gill drives to the basket past Tamarac's Phil Arnold (2). Nelson-Gill slashed his way to the hoop all game long, drawing either a foul or dumping in it for an easy layup.

Cohoes head coach Jeff Huneau looks exasperated on the sidelines during Saturday's game but the Tigers never trailed.

All of the Tigers pointed to their big loss at Lansingburgh on Feb. 17, a game the Knights won 79-54, as the turning point in Cohoes' season.

"Since the ‘Burgh game, we’ve been focused and guys have been ready to practice and giving great effort," Huneau said. "Sometimes it takes getting your tail kicked like that that to get together and get going."
Nelson-Gill floats the ball towards the rim in Saturday's game. He scored the first six points of the third quarter to give the Tigers a cushion after Tamarac's Steve Hunt hit a buzzer-beater just before halftime to draw the Bengals within three.

Cohoes attempted 40 foul shots while Tamarac went to the line eight times.

"I’m sorry, but I was just not in love with the way that game was officiated," Tamarac head coach Eric Medved said. "I really feel like that has a lot to do with it. I’ve never said that before to the media."

Tamarac's Tyler Shaw drives to the hole over Cohoes' Greg Tessier (3). Shaw was one of 10 Tamarac seniors that finished their career Saturday afternoon. Although they couldn't quite win the Wasaren League title this season or advance to the Section II Class B championship game, those 10 seniors put the Bengals on the map and have drawn many talented underclassmen to the program.

Look for plenty more on the game in Sunday's edition of The Record.

The first game was an upset special, too. Schuylerville junior forward Tyler Barber connected on a deep 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to lift the Black Horses (12-10) to a big 43-42 upset over the third-seeded Tigers.

"It’s an amazing feeling right now," said Barber of his only basket of the game. "We’ve had somewhat of a rocky season, but it’s what you do in sectionals that you remember."

'Vliet girls hold off Schuylerville in 2 OT thriller

Watervliet head coach Gordie Johnson wrote two numbers on the blackboard in the Lady Cannoneers' locker room. 94 & 32. He wanted his team to use all 94 feet of the court for all 32 minutes.
His message was well received, even if he shortchanged his team by eight minutes of basketball.
No. 1 Watervliet held off No. 8 Schuylerville 57-47 in double overtime to advance to the Section II Class B semifinals against No. 12 Mechanicville. Tuesday's game at Saratoga Springs High School begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $6.

Schuylerville's Leah Hathaway tries to move the ball against Watervliet's Ailaya Demand (l) during Friday's game at Watervliet High School. Nae White (3) looks on. (All photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

Watervliet's Julie Keegan attempts a shot as Schuylerville's Bridgette Plummer (44) defends. Plummer finished with 17 rebounds and six blocks and anchored a Black Horses 2-3 zone defense that stymied the Cannoneers through much of the first half. Lashana Tolliver, an eighth grader, also grabbed 17 rebounds for Watervliet in valuable minutes off the bench.

Nae White (r) and Keegan (l) try to strip the ball from Plummer during Friday's game on George Mardigan Court. Watervliet senior Jen Gates sparked the Cannoneers with two seperate one-person five-point runs in the third quarter and junior guard Tierney McGlynn stepped up her game in the second overtime period.

Mechanicville junior point guard Nicole Manupella led the Red Raiders to an upset of No. 5 Greenville in the opening round of the Section II Class B tournament and she sparked an upset of No. 4 Catskill in the quarterfinals Friday at Watervliet High School. The Red Raiders will face Colonial Council rival Watervliet in the semis on Tuesday at Saratoga Springs High School.

Alysa Russell, a freshman, elevates to the rim in Friday's victory over Catskill. She played third base on Mechanicville's state championship-winning softball team as an eighth grader and she's having a big impact on the basketball team as well.

Heatly Hornets looking to sting Class D competition

Heatly boys basketball players Alex Heffern (l), LaShon Pringle and Peter Heffern - all cousins - look to lead the No. 1 seeded Hornets to their first Section II title in school history. (Photo by Tom Killips - The Record)

William Montgomery
The Record

GREEN ISLAND - Tucked away in a corner of the Heatly School trophy case is the flaking and crusty crown jewel of the boys basketball program. Aged by years of oxidation and shrouded in dust, the cup touting the Hornets’ 1936-37 Eastern New York Public High School Athletic Association League’s Eastern Section title draws more attention than the long list of Central Hudson Valley League championships the Hornets have won in recent years.
In spite of their regular season success, that old trophy contains all of the postseason frustrations the Hornets have endured since.
But a trio of cousins - senior LaShon Pringle, junior Peter Heffern and sophomore Alex Heffern – led the Hornets to a 2008-09 regular season Central Hudson Valley League championship, their first in three seasons.
Alex Heffern was a first team CHVL All-Star, Pringle was a second team selection and Peter Heffern was an honorable mention pick. Senior Brandon Fish was also named to the first team. The cousins, however, are looking to lead Heatly to its first Section II boys basketball title in school history.
Today, No. 1 Heatly (16-4) faces No. 8 Northville (11-9) in a Section II Class D quarterfinal matchup at Saratoga Springs High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Admission is $6.
The Hornets, coming from a small school, are traditionally few in number, but they’ve had to deal with being small in stature, too. With only one player taller than six feet, Alex Heffern leads Heatly’s perimeter shooting attack with 14.9 points per game.
"We’re one of the smallest teams in the league but we have to go out and play our game," he said. "To start off the game, we usually look inside, but basically everyone on our team can shoot."
Peter and Alex have combined to make 56 three-point baskets, and Pringle is Heatly’s biggest scoring threat in the paint.
Under the guidance of first-year varsity head coach Peter Heffern – junior Peter’s father - who coached many of the players as junior varsity head coach from 2000-08, the group began to play as a cohesive unit. With their long history of familiarity, whether related or not, the Hornets have cut down on turnovers and always look to make the extra pass.
"I think these kids are closer than most and that leads to a family atmosphere which leads to a better team atmosphere," head coach Heffern said. "I think, in all fairness to other classes prior, I think this team had an advantage being family and knowing that they have to play together to win."
The family tradition extends to the girls team as well, as Melissa Heffern and Danielle Greene have led the Lady Hornets (11-9) to a No. 4 seed in the Class D tournament and a Saturday date with No. 5 Northville. Tip-off at Germantown High School is set for 6 p.m.
A 12-game winning streak through the end of the regular season and quality non-league victories over Mechanicville and Berne-Knox-Westerlo led the Section II seeding committee to award the Heatly boys the No. 1 seed. Five CHVL rivals are among the contenders in the Class D bracket and it could be a banner season for the league, which has not been home to a Section II champion this decade.
"It turned out in the seeding that we’re not really going to face any of those until the end and I really hope we meet one of those because I think it would be really great for the league," said coach Heffern. "Our league hasn’t fared well - we have got there - but haven’t won. It certainly would be nice for league if we can put someone in finals and win it."
The Hornets will have endured a 14-day layoff when Saturday’s quarterfinal game begins but they’re hoping their hours spent playing against former Heatly players in local parks in the summer has toughened them up for a run through the Class D bracket.
"It really does mean a lot," Alex Heffern said. "Talking to alumni, we’re the first No. 1 seed since 1999 and we’ve never won a sectional title."
The younger Peter Heffern was quick to finish his cousin’s thought.
"It’s a big deal," he said.

(Note: Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this is ever going to fit in the hard copy of The Record because of space limitations in recent days, so I'll post it here for posterity's sake)

CCHS seniors: beaten, bloodied and victorious; Eagles fly over Tigers

Catholic Central's Colleen Dignum (4) looks to move the ball past Saratoga Springs' Kayla Crawford in Wednesday's Section II Class AA opening round game at Monsignor Burns Gymnasium in Troy. Dignum scored the Crusaders' only points of the third quarter and bloodied her nose on the play, but the drive inspired a fourth quarter rally by the rest of her senior teammates. Catholic Central held on for a 42-39 victory. (All photos by Mike McMahon - The Record).

Carly LaBombard (10) aims a shot as Saratoga's Kathleen Hannan defends in Wednesday's game. LaBombard scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Crusaders rallied from three down to claim a vicory in what was the final game on the home floor for the CCHS seniors. Dignum also finished with 11 points.

Catholic Central's Olivia DeMarco (center) fights for the ball between Saratoga's Marie Davison (l) and Staci McElroy (r). DeMarco did not play in the first meeting between these teams, a 42-40 victory for the Blue Streaks on Nov. 29. The New Haven University-bound senior center grabbed 10 rebounds, scored eight points and made three blocks.

Technical difficulties prevented the CCHS staff from playing a recorded version of the national anthem, so Davison stepped up to the microphone to give her rendition. It was a great display of sportsmanship and the CCHS fans gave her a great round of applause.

Saratoga's Staci McElroy (10) goes to the hole as Catholic Central's Taliah Pounds gets a hand on the ball. Pounds, a sophomore, grabbed five rebounds and scored three points in limited minutes, but provided valuable backup in the post for DeMarco.

After losing their first three games this season, the Lady Crusaders have won 14 of their past 17 and ride a six-game winning streak into the Section II Class AA quarterfinals.
Big 10 No. 3 Catholic Central advances to face Bethlehem (15-6), the Suburban Council No. 2 seed. The teams will play at Schenectady High School on Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission is $3.

Look for the full game recap in Thursday's edition of The Record, as well as the juicy details about the Bethlehem-CCHS rivalry.

Loudonville's Christian's Cullen Overholt (11) smooshes the ball into the floor at Shaker High School during a Section II Class D opening round game on Wednesday night. The No., 6 seeded Eagles used 17 points from Overholt, the 2008-09 Central Hudson Valley League Co-MVP, to defeat a CHVL foe, No. 11 seed New Lebanon, 46-41.

Loudonville Christian's Jared Rebeor (33), a second team All-CHVL selection, scored eight points in the victory. The Eagles advace to take on No. 3 Sharon Springs in a Class D quarterfinal game Saturday at Saratoga Springs High School. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. and admission is $6.

Tigers dial long distance; Bengals boys edge out Sir Bills

Cohoes' Meg Keeler (r) looks to evade Tamarac's Zysnia Osepa during Tuesday's Section II Class B opening round game. The No. 11 seeded Tigers used seven 3-pointers to defeat the No. 6 Bengals, 48-33. Keeler, a senior center, scored 17 points in the post for Cohoes. Maggie Maloney netted four treys and Betsy Santoro added a pair during the 18-0 run. (All photos by Tom Killips - The Record)

Cohoes' Anna Gunderman (l) fights for a rebound with Tamarac's Samantha Matthews. Cohoes used an 18-0 run to close out the third quarter to pull away with an insurmountable lead.

Tamarac's Erica Derby looks to pass as Cohoes' Meg Keeler defends during Tuesday's game. The Tigers advance to play No. 3 Johnstown (18-3) Friday at Fonda-Fultonville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and admission is $3. The Lady Bills are the No. 17 ranked Class B team in New York.

Cohoes head coach Dan Hytko (pictured above) had this to say after the game:
"Tamarac deserved the sixth seed and they had a good season," he said. "(Tamarac head coach Buzz Mulqueen) has done a great job with these guys over here and we knew we had to come ready to play and I guess we did."

Tamarac's senior point guard Tyler Shaw elevates to the basket during the nightcap of Tuesday's Section II Class B opening round doubleheader. The Bengals, who trailed by six points with five and a half minutes to play, rallied for a 59-54 victory over the Sir Bills.

Brent Matazinsky (above) scored 20 points and fellow senior Steve Hunt added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Bengals. No. 2 Tamarac (17-4) advances to face No. 7 Cohoes (12-9) on Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College in a Class B quarterfinal game. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. Admission is $6.

"We didn’t panic because we’ve been down before during the season," Hunt said. "We just kept our composure and took it one play at a time. We chipped away at the lead until we tied it and then we pulled ahead. I love these guys - I’m so glad we won."

Class D boys basketball moves to Saratoga

Adam Cole, the Section II Class D basketball chairman, sent us an email this morning confirming that the Section II Class D boys quarterfinal games this Saturday will be moved to Saratoga Springs High School. Times remain the same.

The Class D bracket has been updated here.

Look for a story on the Heatly School boys team, which earned a No. 1 seed in the D brackets, in Friday's edition of The Record.

(Also of note, the Albany Academy boys have moved the site for their game against Catholic Central to Nolan Gym at the College of Saint Rose at 6:30 p.m. The AA bracket has been corrected.)

Admission to all first round games is $3. For boys quarters, semis and finals, admission is $6. For girls, quarters are $3 and semis and finals are $6. This money goes to Section II which uses it to fund the expenses incurred by teams that advance to regional and state competition. Tour bus cost and the like come out of the admission fee.

The remainder of the boys brackets are here.

For girls brackets, click here.

I will be updating them tonight as the scores roll in, so be sure to check back and see who your team plays next.

Section II football notes

A few football notes before the Section II basketball tournament kicks into full swing on Tuesday night.

According to www.section2football.com, a few teams are changing classes. The list:
Niskayuna -- Moving from Class AA to Class A
Lansingburgh -- Moving from Class A to Class B
Cairo-Durham -- Moving from Class B to Class C
Taconic Hills -- Moving from Class B to Class C
Lake George -- Moving from Class C to Class D
Canajoharie -- Moving from Class D to Class C

The 2009 schedule should be released sometime this week and a renewal of the old Cohoes-Lansingburgh rivalry should be a great sight for Collar City-area football fans.

The class a school belongs to depends on the numbers of students in grades 9-11 enrolled at each district. Coaches and committee chairs do not lobby to have the public schools placed in certain classes - it's based on a number. The private schools: CBA, La Salle, Bishop Maginn, Albany Academy, Catholic Central, Bishop Gibbons and Saratoga Catholic, are distributed roughly based on enrollment, historic rivalries and for the sake of competitive balance.

To view the new division setup for the 2009 season, click here.
La Salle senior Marquis Terrell ran his way into the record book during the 2008 season and finished as the No. 5 yardage-gaining back in Section II history. (Photo by J.S. Carras - The Record).

The Section II football record book has also been updated to include numbers from the 2008 season and more information can be read here. A link to download the new book is available at the bottom of that page.

The folks that run the website do an excellent job and it's certainly worth your while to go check it out.

Clemente and Altarac were state champions a season ago and they will defend their titles this weekend when the New York State tournament returns to Albany.

Brian Walsh of Watervliet was a Division II champion at 135 pounds, while Tamarac’s Jake Oswald captured the 140-pound crown. Taylor Robichaud from Hoosick Falls was a winner at 160.

Columbia’s Brian Latham, who carried an undefeated senior season record into the weekend, fell by a 19-8 decision to Glen Falls’ Nick Lashway in the 135-pound Division I final. Connor Sutton (112) and Jon Clemente (119) of La Salle also earned second place finishes, as did Columbia’s Adam Hullet (130). Lansingburgh’s Chad Obzud (171) and Nate Brown from Averill Park, at 285 pounds, were the other local Division I second place finishers.

Watervliet’s John Delaney (96), Cohoes’ Dustin Hallock (160) and Greg Mollnow (215) and Hoosick Falls’ Jeremy Burns (189) were among the local Division II second place grapplers.

Tigers alum makes Siena crowd roar

At halftime of Saturday's Siena College-Northern Iowa Bracketbusters game, Brendan Bradt hit a halfcourt shot and won $25,000 in front of a full house...plus the tarps.

Bradt, a 2002 Cohoes High graduate, played point guard for the Tigers and moved on to play at Hudson Valley Community College for two years.

Bradt, 24, currently lives in Boston where he plans to attend graduate school for a masters’ degree in counseling. His goal is to become a high school guidance counselor.

Bradt says he will use the $25,000 windfall to pay off student loans.

The Cohoes boys begin their 2008-09 Section II playoff push as a No. 7 seed hosting No. 10 Chatham in a Class B opening round game Tuesday at Cohoes HS. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Cohoes girls were seeded No. 11 and travel to Clums Corners to take on No. 6 Tamarac on Tuesday with a scheduled 6 p.m. tip. The Tamarac boys entertain Johnstown after the Cohoes-Tamarac girls game.

Columbia victorious on senior night, part two

The Columbia boys basketball team lost on senior night last Thursday, with many players assuming it would be the last home game they would get to play. The Section II seeding committee, however, awarded the Blue Devils a home game on Friday in a Class AA play-in game against Niskayuna and those eight seniors picked it up in their second chance. Steven King (pictured above; Niskayuna's Kevin Nunez (5) defends) connected on five three-point baskets and scored a game-high 23 points in a 54-47 victory for Columbia. With 59 three-pointers this season, King is three treys behind Travis Jones' 2006-07 output of 62, the Columbia single-season record. (All photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

Columbia's Nick Keefe (left) brings the ball up the floor with Niskayuna's Aaron Wyngowski in hot pursuit during Friday's Section II Class AA play-in game on Bob Smith Court.

For the second consecutive season, the Blue Devils (11-10) will face Bishop Maginn in a first round game as the No. 8 Suburban Council seed. The Golden Griffins are defending NYS Class AA champions and defeated Columbia 107-46 in last year's first round game.

Niskayuna's Guy Waltman (44) and Dan Peters (right) battle for the ball with Columbia's Ian Gaule (center) during Friday's Section II Class AA play-in game at Columbia High School.

Great Scott! (Colonial Council title edition)

Lansingburgh senior Haneef Scott (23) dropped 40 points on Cohoes on Tuesday night and he didn't even play the final 5:27 of the game. Lansingburgh won, 79-54 to claim sole possession of their first Colonial Council title since the 1979-80 season. (All photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

Xavier Murray leaps over Cohoes' Mark Gallerie for a first quarter layup in Tuesday's Colonial Council game at Lansingburgh High School. Murray, a senior transfer from Troy High, scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Knights.
Michael Collins (right) tries to block a shot by Cohoes' Josh LeMay (00). Collins was one of six Lansingburgh seniors that led the Knights on a 15-0 first quarter run, which led to a 35-9 lead after one quarter.
Lansingburgh's Jordan Zareski (center) grabs a rebound as Cohoes' Nick Benoit (21) and Josh LeMay (right) look on. The Knights learn their fate in the Section II Class A tournament on Wednesday afternoon and could likely be seeded fifth in the nine-team field.

Remember to check back here on Wednesday afternoon for the opening round brackets and seeds from the Section II seeding meeting. I'll also open up a chat window if anyone wants to chime in and sound off.
And check out Wednesday's edition of The Record for plenty more on Scott's performance on Tuesday night.

Boys Basketball

Big 10

B. Maginn (AA, 16) (16-0, 17-3)
C.B.A. (AA, 22) (14-2, 17-3)
Albany (9-7, 11-9)
B. Gibbons (9-7, 12-8)
Schenectady (9-7, 11-9)
Catholic Central (4-12, 5-15)
La Salle (4-12, 6-14)
Troy (4-12, 5-15)
Amsterdam (3-13, 5-15)

Bishop Maginn clinched Big 10 title
The Griffins in Class AA and Bishop Gibbons in Class A likely locked up No. 1 seeds for their respective Section II tournaments with strong play in the Big 10 this season. Gibbons, however, needs senior Brian Hamor to come back healthy if the Golden Knights think they can hold on in the sectionals.
CBA and Schenectady also should be strong dark horse teams in the AAs.

Suburban Council

North Division
Shenendehowa (AA, 18) (15-1, 19-1)
Saratoga Springs (11-5, 14-6)
Shaker (9-7, 10-10)
Burnt Hills (7-9, 9-11)
Niskayuna (4-12, 5-15)
Ballston Spa (1-15, 4-16)

South Division
Colonie (12-4, 14-6)
Mohonasen (11-5, 13-7)
Guilderland (10-6, 12-8)
Bethlehem (8-8, 8-12)
Columbia (6-10, 10-10)
Averill Park (2-14, 3-17)

North Division: Shenendehowa clinched title
South Division: Colonie & Mohonasen tied
Burnt Hills is at Colonie and Mohonasen is playing Saratoga on Tuesday night, so neither of the South Division frontrunners will have an easy time trying to claim sole possession of the division.
When the Class AA tournament kicks off next week, the Albany Academies will likely be seeded on the Suburban side, if history is any indication, as Albany Academy head coach Brian Fruscio told me early in the season. With an 19-1 record and a No. 2 Class AA ranking from the New York State Sportswrtiers Association, the Cadets should be placed ahead of Shen, but the committee could also reward Shen with a No. 1 for actually winning a league title and put the Cadets at No. 2. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but either way, it will be the most compelling topic of the day.
The Plainsmen have a tough team and the Blue Streaks are always dangerous with Jordan Stevens, but Big 10 teams have won seven consecutive large school Section II titles and I wouldn't expect that to change this year.
(Averill Park and Burnt Hills have had success at the Class A level, however)

Colonial Council

Lansingburgh (13-1, 15-5)
Voorheesville (12-2, 14-6)
Cohoes (9-5, 11-9)
Watervliet (9-5, 11-8)
Mechanicville (5-9, 6-14)
Cobleskill (4-10, 4-16)
Ravena (2-12, 2-16)
Schalmont (2-12, 2-17)

Lansingburgh clinched Colonial Council title

The Knights can lock up sole possession of their first Colonial Council title since 1980 with a victory over Cohoes tonight and also should be considered a dark horse in the Section II Class A bracket. Scotia-Glenville will be tough, as will Bishop Gibbons, but 'Burgh played ND-BG pretty tough at the Kirvin Cup tourney in December and were 5-1 against Class A competition this season.

Wasaren League

Hoosick Falls (C, 15) (11-3, 15-5)
Granville (10-4, 16-4)
Tamarac (10-4, 16-4)
Hoosic Valley (7-7, 13-7)
Schuylerville (7-7, 10-10)
Stillwater (7-7, 10-10)
Cambridge (2-12, 3-17)
Greenwich (2-12, 8-13)

Hoosick Falls clinched Wasaren League title
All of the Wasaren League teams are dangerous in the sectionals because they play a scrappy, man-to-man style that teams from other conferences may be uncomfortable with.
Tamarac and Granville should be up there among the Class B seeds and Hoosick Falls and Hoosic Valley could make a push in the Class CC bracket.

Patroon Conference

Maple Hill (C, 5) (17-1, 19-1)
Ichabod Crane (15-3, 15-5)
Rensselaer (13-5, 14-6)
Hudson (11-7, 12-8)
Cairo-Durham (10-8, 12-8)
Chatham (9-9, 12-9)
Catskill (7-11, 8-12)
Greenville (6-12, 7-13)
Coxsackie (2-16, 2-18)
Taconic Hills (0-18, 1-19)

Maple Hill clinched first Patroon Conference title since the 2003-04 season
It will be very interesting to see where the Section II committee puts Maple Hill. Some of their wins did come against teams like Taconic Hills and Coxsackie-Athens, but the Wildcats also defeated Class A Ichabod Crane twice, which is much more than teams from the Western Athletic Conference or Colonial Council can say.
Rensselaer, the defending Class C champions, should also be pretty high up on the Class C pecking order.

CHVL

Heatly (14-2, 16-4)
Germantown (12-4, 15-5)
Loudonville Christian (12-4, 13-7)
Berlin (10-6, 10-10)
Waterford (10-6, 11-9)
Hawthorne Valley (5-11, 5-11)
New Lebanon (5-11, 5-13)
Doane Stuart (4-12, 6-13)
Berkshire (0-16, 0-19)

Heatly clinched CHVL title
A CHVL team has not won a Section II title since Berkshire won the Class D title in 1998. Heatly, however, should be highly seeded and I know they have a deep bench that should help them in close games. CHVL foes Germantown and Loudonville Christian will be hanging around, too.

Girls basketball

Big 10

Schenectady (AA, 20) (10-2, 17-3)
B. Maginn (9-3, 12-6)
Catholic Central (8-4, 13-6)
Albany (7-5, 11-9)
Amsterdam
(6-6, 9-11)
Troy (2-10, 7-13)
B. Gibbons (0-12, 1-18)

Schenectady clinched Big 10 title
The Lady Patriots' only early season defeat came at the hands of Niskayuna, and they'll be hard-pressed to pick up a win over any of the Suburban Council teams in sectionals, either.
CCHS, with Olivia DeMarco returning to form at just the right time, could pose a very interesting matchup for teams like Shenendehowa or Bethlehem, the favorites heading in.

Suburban Council

North Division
Shenendehowa (AA, 15) (14-2, 16-4)
Niskayuna (10-6, 13-7)
Saratoga Springs (7-9, 9-11)

Burnt Hills (2-13, 3-16)

Columbia (7-9, 9-11)
Guilderland (5-11, 9-11)

North Division: Shenendehowa clinched title
South Division: Mohonasen clinched title
Shen and Mohonasen should take No. 1 seeds in the Class AA and A tournaments respectively, and they look like the odds-on favorites to win Section II titles.
Averill Park, however, will surely be in the Class A mix and Bethlehem is one of the strongest teams in the AAs.

Colonial Council

Holy Names (A, 3) (18-0, 20-0)
Lansingburgh (A, 20) (14-4, 14-6)
Voorheesville (C, 16) (14-4, 15-5)
Watervliet (12-6, 14-6)
Cobleskill (8-10, 10-10)
Cohoes (8-10, 9-11)
Mechanicville (7-11, 9-11)
Ravena (4-14, 4-16)
Albany Acad. for Girls (3-15, 4-17)
Schalmont (2-16, 3-17)

Holy Names clinched Colonial Council title
Although Holy Names is 20-0, they'll likely be the No. 3 seed in the Class A tournament behind Averill Park and Mohonasen, who both hold a number of victories over Class A teams. Holy Names beat Lansingburgh twice and also defeated Maple Hill in a non-league game, but the committee will likely hold their relatively weak Colonial Council schedule against them.

Wasaren League

Hoosic Valley (C, 5) (13-1, 19-1)
Stillwater (11-3, 15-5)
Greenwich (9-5, 15-5)
Schuylerville (8-6, 11-9)
Tamarac (8-6, 12-8)
Cambridge (4-10, 8-12)
Hoosick Falls (2-12, 4-14)
Granville (1-13, 6-14)

Hoosic Valley clinched fourth consecutive Wasaren League title
With their trademark defense, the Indians will be one of the favorites in the Class CC bracket. Stillwater also proved that they are a very tough team and should be there in the end as well.

Patroon Conference

Maple Hill (C, 3) (16-0, 19-1)
Catskill (13-3, 15-5)
Greenville (12-4, 15-5)
Rensselaer (9-7, 12-8)
Hudson (9-7, 11-9)
Coxsackie (6-10, 10-10)
Taconic Hills (4-12, 6-13)
Cairo- Durham (3-13, 5-15)
Chatham (0-16, 0-20)

Maple Hill clinched third consecutive Patroon Conference title, 45-game Patroon Conference winning streak
It will be interesting to see how the Wildcats are seeded in the tournament as their league schedule probably doesn't help them in the minds of the committee. They do hold a non-league victory over Cohoes and their only loss came to Class A undefeated Holy Names, so they should be up there. A Maple Hill-Hoosic Valley would be awfully fun to watch, but probably not so much for the scoreboard operator.

CHVL

Germantown (D, 2) (16-0, 20-0)
Berlin (13-3, 14-4)
Emma Willard (12-3, 12-6)
Heatly (10-6, 11-9)
Waterford (8-8, 8-11)
New Lebanon (5-11, 5-15)
Loudonville Christian (4-11, 5-14)
Doane Stuart (2-14, 2-15)
Hawthorne Valley (0-14, 0-14)

Germantown clinched CHVL title
The Clippers haven't lost yet and it looks like they have the inside track towards the No. 1 seed, having defeated Class B Emma Willard twice during the season.
