Tigers dial long distance; Bengals boys edge out Sir Bills
Cohoes' Meg Keeler (r) looks to evade Tamarac's Zysnia Osepa during Tuesday's Section II Class B opening round game. The No. 11 seeded Tigers used seven 3-pointers to defeat the No. 6 Bengals, 48-33. Keeler, a senior center, scored 17 points in the post for Cohoes. Maggie Maloney netted four treys and Betsy Santoro added a pair during the 18-0 run. (All photos by Tom Killips - The Record)
Cohoes' Anna Gunderman (l) fights for a rebound with Tamarac's Samantha Matthews. Cohoes used an 18-0 run to close out the third quarter to pull away with an insurmountable lead.
Tamarac's Erica Derby looks to pass as Cohoes' Meg Keeler defends during Tuesday's game. The Tigers advance to play No. 3 Johnstown (18-3) Friday at Fonda-Fultonville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and admission is $3. The Lady Bills are the No. 17 ranked Class B team in New York.
Cohoes head coach Dan Hytko (pictured above) had this to say after the game:
"Tamarac deserved the sixth seed and they had a good season," he said. "(Tamarac head coach Buzz Mulqueen) has done a great job with these guys over here and we knew we had to come ready to play and I guess we did."
Tamarac's senior point guard Tyler Shaw elevates to the basket during the nightcap of Tuesday's Section II Class B opening round doubleheader. The Bengals, who trailed by six points with five and a half minutes to play, rallied for a 59-54 victory over the Sir Bills.
Brent Matazinsky (above) scored 20 points and fellow senior Steve Hunt added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Bengals. No. 2 Tamarac (17-4) advances to face No. 7 Cohoes (12-9) on Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College in a Class B quarterfinal game. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. Admission is $6.
"We didn’t panic because we’ve been down before during the season," Hunt said. "We just kept our composure and took it one play at a time. We chipped away at the lead until we tied it and then we pulled ahead. I love these guys - I’m so glad we won."
