BURNT HILLS — The Loudonville Christian School’s girls volleyball team expected the fastball from Voorheesville’s hitters in Thursday’s Section II Class CC/C playoff match, but the Blackbirds, time and time again, fooled the Eagles with the changeup.

As the Loudonville defense crept back to defend the powerful kill shots from Voorheesville’s hitters, the Blackbirds adjusted and started softly tipping the ball into open space in the frontcourt, piling up the points in a 3-0 victory at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School by scores of 25-11, 25-23 and 25-18.

“Voorheesville completely deserved to win that match,” said Loudonville head coach Rosemary Burgher. “They’re a well-balanced team, defensively and offensively. They have a great setter and they have a smart attack. They knew where our holes were and they controlled the tempo of the game.”

The Blackbirds watched Loudonville score the first point of the match, but Voorheesville charged back on an 8-0 run that forced the Eagles to call timeout. Voorheesville poured it on offensively late as well, closing out the first game on a 9-1 run.

Loudonville Christian (16-3, Section II’s Class CC champion) led for much of the second game, but Voorheesville closed that game with an 11-5 run, to steal a 25-23 victory.

In the third game, the Blackbirds also finished strong on a 9-2 run to capture their first trip to regionals since 2007.

“Like I said to my team, it’s the ultimate team sport,” Burgher said. “Who remembers the third mistake on the third point? No one does. We win together, we lose together.”

Voorheesville senior libero Ellie Wagner paced the team with 34 digs and five service points, while senior outside hitter Morgan Vandervort added 11 kills and 10 digs. Libby Bjork, a freshman setter, added 34 assists and eight service points. Rebecca Bablin (eight service points, six kills) and Mariel McGinnis (seven kills, seven digs) also chipped in for the Blackbirds.

“That was a big adjustment for us,” Voorheesville head coach Sandra Vorse said. “Usually, we like to hit the ball hard. We’re a power team. The first game, we were hitting well and then they pulled their defense way deep. When that happens, you have to adjust, so we starting going offspeed and doing some tips.”

Loudonville Christian posted a 3-0 victory over Voorheesville in the 2009 Section II Class C championship game (there was just one bracket) and the memory of that loss certainly inspired Voorheesville Thursday afternoon.

“When we walked in here, I remembered coming out in the hall and feeling pretty lousy and I didn’t want to do that again,” Vorse said. “They went to a strength trainer this summer and they did ‘Loudonville Christian’ push-ups. They’ve been thinking about this for a long time.”

Voorheesville (20-0, Section II’s Class C champion) advances to face Section VII champion AuSable Valley (9-9) in a regional final match Saturday at 4 p.m. at Niskayuna High School.

AuSable Valley had knocked off Section X champion Potsdam (13-8) in a regional semifinal Wednesday night. This is the first year Section VII teams are a part of the New York State tournament, as girls volleyball in the Plattsburgh area had been played as a winter sport in the past.

The New York State Final Four begins Saturday, Nov. 20 and continues through Sunday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Junior outside hitter Hattie Burgher paced the Eagles with 10 digs and eight kills. Senior middle hitter Arlina Anderson added five kills.

Following the match, the Most Valuable Players from the leagues with teams in Class C were honored at center court. Burgher, the Central Hudson Valley League MVP, and Wagner, the Colonial Council’s top individual player, were joined by Nancy Vickerson (Sr., Tamarac, Wasaren League), Katie Roth (Sr., Maple Hill, Patroon Conference), and Katy Munzenmaier (Sr., Lake George, Adirondack League).

Loudonville will lose Anderson and senior captain Chelsea Brown to graduation in June, but the rest of the team will return in 2011.

“We’ll be back. We’ll be back next year,” coach Burgher said. “This isn’t too shabby, but they forget it. They don’t put it into perspective. How many high school programs get to come to sectionals? I’m proud of them. I love them so much.”

BURNT HILLS — The Shenendehowa High School girls volleyball team won its first Section II title in 20 years, defeating Bethlehem, 3-1 in the Section II Class AA championship match Thursday morning at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School.

The Lady Plainsmen (16-4), the No. 2 seed, upset No. 1 Bethlehem (17-3) in the finals.
Shen will play Section III champion Baldwinsville on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Union College.

Class A

Burnt Hills 3, Queensbury 0: The No. 1 seeded Spartans (18-0) cruised to victory in the Section II Class A championship match at Niskayuna High School.

It was the ninth straight Section II title for Burnt Hills.
Burnt Hills will next play Section III champion Oswego on Saturday at Union College at 1 p.m.

Class B

Ravena 3, Johnstown 2: The No. 1 seeded Indians (18-1) held off the No. 3 Lady Bills (13-5) in the Section II Class B championship match at Burnt Hills.
Ravena will next play Section VII champion Beekmantown Saturday at 6 p.m. at Niskayuna.

Class D

Argyle 3, Hartford 1: The No. 3 seeded Scots (18-3) topped No. 4 Hartford (14-4) in an all-Adirondack League Section II Class C championship match at Burnt Hills.
Argyle will next play Section VII champion Northern Adirondack on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Union College.

HUDSON FALLS — Hattie Burgher saved her biggest kill for last Tuesday evening in the Section II Class CC girls volleyball championship match against Tamarac.

Burgher, a junior outside hitter at the Loudonville Christian School, put an exclamation point on the Eagles’ 3-1 victory over the Bengals with her 19th kill of the match. Her teammates stormed the court to hop up and down and hoist the Section II trophy together following a topsy-turvy battle against Tamarac at Hudson Falls High School.

Loudonville (16-2), the No. 1 seed and the Central Hudson Valley League’s regular season champion, won the first game 26-24 and posted a 25-15 triumph over the Bengals in game two. Tamarac, however, rallied to win game three, 26-24 and was two points away from sealing a victory in game four. Loudonville won six of the final seven points in the fourth game, clinching the fourth Section II title for the program in the past five years with a 26-24 victory.

“We have a great coach and we have great talent,” said Burgher, at right, who added 17 digs. “As small as our school is, we all work hard. Everyone is willing to work hard and push themselves because they want to keep up the winning tradition.”

Chelsea Brown, at left, a senior captain, who like Burgher, is in her fourth year as an outside hitter on the varsity squad, recorded 19 service points and 10 kills, claimed Tuesday’s match was one of the toughest the team had played in all season.

“We’ve had a few matches that were pretty tough, but the girls pulled through every time,” she said.


Julia Brown added 46 assists, 22 digs and 11 service points for the Eagles, while Arlina Anderson chipped in with 14 kills. Sam Parry bolstered Loudonville’s offensive attack with 11 kills.

Loudonville had defeated Tamarac 3-0 in a non-conference matchup during the regular season.

“Every time we pass the ball and put it to the setter’s hands, we have a kill. So that’s my secret,” said Loudonville head coach Rosemary Burgher. “It’s not a big secret. Everybody wants to be the glory hitter, the killer, the attacker. You can’t get there unless you have good, effective passing.”

Tamarac (14-5), the No. 2 seed, was making its first appearance in a Section II championship match. The Bengals, who won a Wasaren League championship for the first time in school history in 2009, repeated that feat in 2010.

Head coach Judy Burton will miss a number of her seniors next season, including three-time reigning Wasaren League MVP Nancy Vickerson, but she hopes the path blazed by the team in the last two seasons inspires future generations of Tamarac players.

“This is as far as anybody’s ever gotten,” Burton said. “We have nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to cry about. This is as good as we’ve ever done.”

Loudonville advances to the Section II Class CC/C playoff Thursday at 3 p.m. at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School against Class C’s No. 1 seed Voorheesville (19-0), which defeated Galway 3-0.

A season ago, when there was just one Class C bracket, Loudonville defeated Voorheesville in the championship match, 3-0.

The Eagles know it won’t be easy defending their title, but they’re hoping that the strong team chemistry that has served them well so far carries over into the playoff match.

“We haven’t had a leader in terms of one person to get them all into gear,” said coach Burgher. “They play very emphatically. It’s like a wave. If one is down, they all come down. If one is up, honestly, they’re really unstoppable. They really, really are.”

CASTLETON — They hit the crossbar and hit the post. They failed to capitalize on breakaway opportunities and wide-open chances in front of the net.

Given a second life in overtime, Maple Hill High School junior forward Jakob Yager provided the golden goal in a 1-0 boys soccer victory for the Wildcats over Cobleskill-Richmondville.

 “That’s what some of our games have been like,” Yager said. “1-0 games where we control the game. That’s what this was.”

Maple Hill’s defense allowed just two shots on goalkeeper Derek VanAlstyne. The Wildcats had 11 corner kicks in the game and forced Cobleskill’s C.J. Blohm to make 12 tough saves.

Johnstown used a pair of second half goals in defeating Tamarac 2-0 in the other first round game.

Girls Soccer

The Maple Hill girls soccer team saved its offense for its homecoming celebration, as Meeghan Arno, the school's all-time leading scorer, tallied three goals and Alysha Cross added one goal and two assists in a 6-1 victory over Albany High.

Maple Hill (10-0-0, 11-0-0) will host Cambridge (7-2-1, 8-2-1) in the tournament championship game Monday at 1 p.m. at Maple Hill Middle School. Cambridge defeated Catholic Central 2-0 on a pair of goals from Bridget Cuddihy in the other first round game.

Big 10 Conference rivals Albany High (0-4-0, 1-7-0) and Catholic Central (2-1-1, 6-3-1) will square off in a consolation game at the same time.

“This is natural for us to have this weekend,” Arno said. “We’re finally back in our own tournament and not just playing league games. We’re playing AA schools and showing our stuff. But all of our friends from other school think it’s weird we don’t have football.”

Monday's game between Cambridge and Maple Hill won't only be an interesting non-conference small-school game at the midway point of the 2010 season, it will be a rematch of a great 2009 Section II playoff game.

"We're looking forward to it," Arno said. "We played them last year and we didn't quite come out on top. We're looking to come out on top this time."

It was a bit of a strange day for the girls soccer teams. Albany High and Maple Hill played 10-on-10 in the first half since a number of Albany High players were late to the game because they took SAT exams in the morning. The same thing affected the Catholic Central team, which had to use a player in goal who had never played there before.

Girls Volleyball

A pair of teams with undefeated records in their respective leagues squared off in the championship match of the girls volleyball tournament and the Wasaren League leaders from Tamarac bumped off the homestanding Patroon leaders in Maple Hill.

Tamarac put together an inspirational rally in the second and final game of the championship match to win the tournament title by scores of 25-21 and 25-23.

“I think it was really great that we came together and we really built our energy as we were going,” said Tamarac senior setter Sarah Malsch, pictured, above, who was named tournament MVP. “We started off down and we were down by a lot. Once we started getting point after pint, we started building our energy and confidence.”

The Bengals (7-0, 9-2) won their first-ever regular season league title in 2009 and are hoping to build on that in 2010.

“The program is really starting to grow and get a lot better,” Malsch said. “Last year was our first league championship and we’re headed in that direction this year, so I think it’s getting better and better.”

Maple Hill (10-0, 10-1) is also on the way up under fourth-year varsity head coach Len Bacon.

"It makes us better when we play against a high-level team like that," Bacon said. "Obviously, we would have liked to won, but we played a pretty nice game."

Kiwanis Glover Cross Country Invitational

Ravena senior Mike Morrow covered the course in 16:42 to claim the individual title in the boys race. Berlin, which placed five runners in the top 19, took home the team title in the varsity cross country race. Senior captain Llew Palmer, who placed seventh in 18:03, paced the Mountaineers.

Lansingburgh senior C.J. Sousis placed third overall in a time of 17:07.

In the girls race, the Columbia High girls team passed up the Manhattan Invitational to stay close to home for homecoming weekend and cleaned up at Maple Hill. Senior Anna Boughtwood (19:30), eighth-grader Kaylee Scott (19:31) and freshman Cali Palumbo (20:17) finished 1-2-3 to lead the Blue Devils to the team title.


"I was just trying to stay with her and she just started kicking, so I was like, 'I have to go with her," Boughtwood said of chasing Scott. "We were pushing each other."

"I know what we have as a team. We're up there," said Columbia head coach Doug Hadley. "I'm glad for her, being her senior year. I know Kaylee has a couple of more years. I'm happy with the way they ran today."

Scott, an eighth-grader, finished 10th overall in a time of 19:22.00 in the Great American Cross Country race in Cary, N.C. over the 3.1-mile course. She was the third eighth-grader overall and led Columbia to a sixth place finish in the seeded race.



Anna Boughtwood (25th), Cali Palumbo (32nd), Kailyn Balzano (52nd) and Amanda Jones (53rd) also placed for the Blue Devils. Jones, a seventh-grader, was the top runner at the meet in her grade level.

Scott said that the warm welcome from veterans like Boughtwood has made the transition to the varsity level easy for the youth movement on the Columbia girls team.

 "It's nervewracking, because the first day I was scared that no one would like me, but Anna was so sweet," said Scott. "The state meet is so nervewracking because everyone is taller than you and it's so scary because you're the youngest one there. Oh yeah, it's scary. But it's a fun sport, so I guess you just have to deal with that."

Hoosic Valley’s Maggie Sanderson was fifth overall in 20:36 and Maple Hill’s Kelsey Oglesby (21:01) and Hannah Riordan (21:07) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, leading the Wildcats to a third place team finish.

Troy High School's girls volleyball team lost Tuesday evening at Catholic Central, 3-2. Troy had put together two straight undefeated regular seasons in the Big 10 Conference and had not lost a league game since 2007. Some might call it The Record jinx, but what can you do?

Troy (6-1, 11-1) is now tied with CCHS (6-1, 8-2) atop the Big 10 standings. Our Andrew Santillo was there and he'll have the story in The Record tomorrow.

On a football note, Cohoes' upcoming football game against Hudson has been moved to Fri., Oct. 15, under the portable lights. The Tigers have played night games each of the past two seasons. Kickoff that Friday night is set for 7 p.m.

TROY -- Troy High School’s girls volleyball team is riding one serious winning streak. The Flying Horses have not lost a match in the Big 10 Conference since the tail end of the 2007 season.
Acting serious, however, hasn’t exactly been the team’s key to success.

"For us, honestly, if we are having fun and happy, we just do good," said senior outside hitter Bridget Haggerty. "We like being weird, kind of."

Haggerty, as well as fellow seniors Sylvia Sorriento and Rachel Martin, were freshmen on the 2007 team. They have a long legacy of providing just as many yuks as kills on the court. But now that their high school careers are winding down – all three hope to continue playing the sport collegiately – the trio is setting its sights on the one hurdle they’ve yet to clear thus far: winning a Section II championship.

In 2008, the trio, as sophomores, carried Troy High on an undefeated run through the regular season and a berth in the Section II Class A championship match against Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, which has an even more impressive streak of league victories.

After Thursday’s victory over Shaker, the Lady Spartans have won 289 straight Suburban Council matches, a run that dates back to the 1990 season. The Burnt Hills boys have quite the streak of their own, having posted 125 straight Suburban Council victories.

Troy won the first game of that match against Burnt Hills, but the Spartans rallied to win three games in a row and capture yet another Section II title.

Troy High senior Bridget Haggerty works on her setting skills during a recent practice, but her main weapon on the volleyball court is her ability to rack up the kills against the opposition.

As juniors, the team again went undefeated in league play but was bounced in the Section II Class A semifinals by Queensbury.

This year, the trio is hoping its combined offensive firepower and an inspired effort to improve defensively can carry the team to its first Section II championship since the 1983 season.

"You can tell the way they work on the court, the three of them, you can tell that they’ve been playing together for years," said head coach Christine Danz. "So coming in, this is my second year here, I knew we had a strong offensive team. Our biggest goal this year has been to pick up our defense. Going into sectionals we know we’re going to have stronger teams hitting against us and we have to be quicker and faster and that’s really been our goal this year."

What makes this group’s success all the more amazing is that they’re working with their third setter in three years. Shannon Jones, who now plays softball at Siena College, framed their shots in 2008. In 2009, Maddie Weaver served as setter.

This season, Mary Gallagher has emerged as the quarterback of the offense, although the hitters have taken some time to adjust to her.

"Last year, she (Weaver) was a new setter too and we did pretty good," Haggerty said. "We were able to work off her and this year we’re doing pretty good too."

Troy (6-0, 11-0) heads uptown to play at Big 10 Conference rival Catholic Central (5-1, 7-2) Tuesday.

It’s easy to have fun on the court when your team hasn’t lost a league game in two-plus years, but that happy-go-lucky attitude is also what has kept the streak alive for the Troy seniors.

"I always tell them, you come to play volleyball," Danz said. "You play and work hard and we can have so much fun doing that as long as you’re still playing. They know exactly when it starts getting, you know, a little out of hand and they’re getting too goofy, because they pick it up right away. All I have to say is ‘take a breath and let’s regroup.’ They can do it. I think that’s the biggest thing. It’s very hard once you reach that level to bring a team back, but they can always do that."

Christine Danz, in her second year leading the Troy High volleyball team, has not lost a game in the Big 10. Troy High last lost a league game when this year's seniors were freshmen.

TROY — Thursday evening, the Troy High School girls volleyball team remained undefeated in the Big 10 Conference – a streak that has stretched for nearly three seasons – defeating Amsterdam, 3-0 in the Clement H. Zotto Gymnasium at Troy High School.

Senior Sylvia Sorriento provided 22 service points – seven were aces – and six kills in the victory and Rachel Martin chipped in with 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Fellow senior Bridget Haggerty smashed seven kills for the Flying Horses (6-0, 11-0), who won by game scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-17.

Troy setter Mary Gallagher dished out 27 assists.

Undefeated Big 10 Conference regular season champions in 2008 and 2009, the Flying Horses last lost a league game in 2007, when Sorriento, Martin and Haggerty were freshmen.

Amsterdam (0-6, 0-8) remains winless in 2010.

TROY — Volleyball is still a relatively new sport at both Mechanicville and Lansingburgh High Schools, but it became apparent Monday evening that the Lady Knights still have some catching up to do in the Colonial Council.

Mechanicville senior Anna Arceneaux provided 12 service points – seven were aces – and added seven kills and Gabrielle Galarneau chipped in with five aces and five kills as the Red Raiders posted a 3-1 victory at Lansingburgh High School. Game scores were 25-14, 24-26, 25-14 and 25-13.

Mechanicville (3-2) scored 13 straight points between the first and second games, forcing Lansingburgh head coach Kelly Cataldo to call time out after the Lady Knights fell behind 5-0 in the second game. Lansingburgh (0-4) rallied to tie the game at 10-10 and played through a see-saw battle the rest of the way before winning that game, 26-24.

Mechanicville, which fielded a junior varsity team for the first time four years ago and began play on the varsity level in 2008, took care of business in the third and fourth games to collect the road victory.

“Our team has this thing, no matter if we mess up, we pump each other up,” said Galarneau, one of the Mechanicville captains. “We got the points in the beginning and we lost them, but that’s all right because we know we can get them back if everyone pushes as hard as they can. When girls get down, we just have to pump them up. That’s our job as captains.”

Arceneaux, also a captain for this Mechanicville team which lost 10 players from a year ago, is also one of the area’s premier softball pitchers. She guided the Red Raiders to state titles on the diamond in 2008 and 2009, but admitted she needs an entirely different mentality on the volleyball court.

“In softball, you can control more scoring-wise, but with this, you have to be ready and everything,” Arceneaux said. “Sometimes you fall back and then you have to get back up.”

Since only three players with varsity experience returned to the team in 2010, Arceneaux and Galarneau know the rest of the team is relying on them to go a step further then they did in 2009. The Red Raiders, the No. 14 seed in the Section II Class C tournament, upset No. 3 Tamarac in the opening round, three games to two.

“When we started the first couple of years, we got some wins but they weren’t that great,” Galarneau said. “Last year we went to sectionals and we went to round two. We were pretty proud then and that’s our goal this year, too.”

Lansingburgh was paced by senior captain Alisse McGrath, who provided five digs, two kills and four service points, one of which was an ace. Jessica Howansky added 10 service points and Anna Nielson chipped in with five service points, four kills.

The Lady Knights have also been the varsity scene for three years, but did not have any junior varsity program prior to that, meaning some of the seniors like McGrath have seen their fair share of losses. Lansingburgh did not win a single match its first season and won two in 2009.

“I told them at the beginning of the season that they are the starters of this program,” Cataldo said. “Some day, Lansingburgh volleyball is going to be winning the Colonial Council and they’re going to be able to look back and say, ‘I started that. I went through all the pain so that this program could grow.”

Although the Lady Knights lost the match Monday evening, their coach was proud that they took a baby step in coming from behind in the second game, which ultimately forced a fourth.

“We set small goals,” said Cataldo. “There are a couple of teams we’re hoping to beat. There are a couple of teams we hope to force a game four against. And there are some teams where we go by points. Let’s score 12 points this game. Let’s score 15 points this game.

“We have to break it down because we do lack the experience, but they make up for it in heart.”

FORT JOHNSON — Tyler Reed and Joe Weiler each shot an 82 to pace La Salle Institute to the team championship of the Big 10 Tournament in golf.
The Cadets finished with a 344 to claim the title at Rolling Hills Country Club, with Christian Brothers Academy (358) second and Catholic Central (362) third.
Cory Purcell shot an 80 to earn medalist honors for the Crusaders, who edged fourth-place Troy High by a single stroke.
Mike Gallagher carded an 84 for Bishop Gibbons (376), which finished fifth, with host Amsterdam (382) and Schenectady (397) rounding out the order of finish.
Granville 4, Tamarac 1: Sam McDermott paced the Golden Horde with a round of 40 in the Wasaren League victory.
Tamarac’s low score came from Dan O’Brien, who shot a 42.
Ichabod Crane 189, Cohoes 232: The Riders won a Colonial Council match at Van Schaick Country Club thanks to a round of 45 from Tim Bogardus.
Ian Pingelski paced the Tigers with a 55.

Lansingburgh 4, Ichabod Crane 1: Megan Finnen, Jenna Retell, Allison Caldwell and Meg Strube scored goals for the Lady Knights in a Colonial Council homecoming victory over the Riders.
Lauren Graber, Racheal McDonough and Katie Palermo added assists for Lansingburgh (3-1), which received a combined 10 saves in net from Calli Moise and Carole Montanino.

Boys Soccer
Cambridge 7, Granville 0: Greg Goldstone tallied three goals and goalie Nick Brainerd didn’t have to make one save to record the shutout as the Indians won in the Wasaren League.
Derek Wojtkun added two goals for Cambridge (2-0-1, 3-0-1) against the Golden Horde (0-4-0, 0-4-0), which was blanked for the fourth time this season.
Cairo-Durham 3, Catskill 1: Joey Gagliardi tallied a goal and assisted on another to pace the Mustangs (2-1-0, 4-1-0) past the Cats (1-2-0, 1-2-0) in the Patroon Conference.
Berlin 3, Lee (Mass.) 2: Justin Jewett scored twice, including the game winner in the second half, to propel the visiting Mountaineers to victory.
Phil Bruns made 19 saves to earn the win for Berlin (2-2-0) and Tyler Pomakoy chipped in with two assists.

Guilderland 3, Shaker 0: Liz Tapler totaled eight kills and 13 digs as the Lady Dutch won in the Suburban Council, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21.
