Troy High volleyball remains undefeated in the Big 10

TROY — Thursday evening, the Troy High School girls volleyball team remained undefeated in the Big 10 Conference – a streak that has stretched for nearly three seasons – defeating Amsterdam, 3-0 in the Clement H. Zotto Gymnasium at Troy High School.

Senior Sylvia Sorriento provided 22 service points – seven were aces – and six kills in the victory and Rachel Martin chipped in with 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Fellow senior Bridget Haggerty smashed seven kills for the Flying Horses (6-0, 11-0), who won by game scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-17.
Troy setter Mary Gallagher dished out 27 assists.

Undefeated Big 10 Conference regular season champions in 2008 and 2009, the Flying Horses last lost a league game in 2007, when Sorriento, Martin and Haggerty were freshmen.
Amsterdam (0-6, 0-8) remains winless in 2010.

This team is the real deal and they should go far in the sectionals. The three senior players mentioned are extremely talented and they should lead Troy to a much wanted sectional title. Great stuff!

The bothersome issue with Troy's team is their propensity to go all out with teir power players and end every match after three games. Time and time again they play teams that are far below their skill level and they show little mercy. The coach does rotate a few players during the game, but two of the senior leaders on the squad have RARELY been rested during a single game this season. This is not a slight towards the girls; they give it all whenever they are on the court and they should be proud of their success. It's their coach's decision to leave them in.

This IS a slight towards the coach. Perhaps you should attend a THS football game and observe the second and third stringers playing in the second half. They work just as hard as the starters every practice... when the outcome of the game is in your favor without question, why not let the bench have their moment? Class act, Mr. Burger.

I don't know if Ms. Danz has plans after the game and wants to get every match over with as soon as possible, but the bottom line is that when you are beating another team badly, humiliating them, it would be nice to see five fresh faces on the court. To play your two best players, almost every point, every game is embarrassing to the Troy High program. Perhaps it's the whole "unbeaten" concept; don't risk playing the hard working girls on the bench... you might actually lose a game!

What happens next year? You play the seniors every game and your underclassmen sit and watch... and watch... and watch. A few of the girls have seen little or no play; it's condescending when you do put them in because they don't stay out long enough to break a sweat. Great prep for next season coach!

As a true Troy High sports fan, watching tonight's game disgusted me. It feels even worse now knowing Amsterdam had not won a match all season. Play your starters every game, play your two best pretty much EVERY POINT, beat down every team you play and get the three games in so you can get back on the bus as soon as possible. Great lessons for a high school athlete to learn. Shame on you coach. Too bad we can't get Coach Burger to give you a few pointers on sportsmanship... and class.
