TROY — For the past four years, downstate football fans had enjoyed an annual Class AA semifinal showdown at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium between Section IX superpower Monroe-Woodbury and Section I’s New Rochelle.

There will be a new team in town this year.

Troy High rocked New York’s No. 1 team, Monroe-Woodbury, in last week’s regional round game, 32-21, setting up a semifinal game against New Rochelle (9-0), which had earned a bye after winning the Section I title. Saturday’s semifinal at Dietz Stadium is set to kick off at 8 p.m.

Troy (11-0) was once a regular in the state semifinal round as well. The Flying Horses won Section II titles in 1993 and each year from 1996 to 2000, capturing state titles in 1996 and 1998.

New Rochelle, on the other hand, has been dominant recently. The Huguenots have won five consecutive Section I championships and are 78-10 overall since 2003. Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice is the most prominent of the New Rochelle alumni that have gone on to star at the collegiate and professional level this decade.

Led by senior quarterback Khaliq Butts, who saw his first action at the position in the 2009 New York State Class AA championship game, a game New Rochelle lost, 14-7, to North Tonawanda, the Huguenots have outscored opponents 242-50 this season.

Running backs Jordan Lucas and Capri Corn also power the New Rochelle offense.

Troy, on the other hand, has been much more proficient offensively, outscoring opponents 466-89, in two more games than New Rochelle has played.

Senior running backs Jordan Canzeri (192 atts., 1,643 yds., 27 TD) and Shatiek Lewis (84, 911, 11), who missed most of three games with a high ankle sprain late in the regular season, have a dangerous mix of speed and home run potential. Senior quarterback Brian Marsh (70, 513, 8) is also adept at running the ball out of Troy’s predominantly Power-I and wishbone option-based sets.

Kingston’s Dietz Stadium had been a graveyard for Section II Class AA football teams since 2003. Shenendehowa, which advanced to the New York State championship game in 2002, was the last large school team from the Albany area to win a game beyond the Section II Super Bowl.

Baldwinsville (10-1, Section III) and Rush-Henrietta (11-0, Section V) meet in Saturday’s Class AA western semifinal at Rochester’s Marina Auto Stadium at 6 p.m.

The New York State Class AA championship game will be played on Sun., Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

CLIFTON PARK -- Late in the second quarter of Saturday’s Section II Class A Super Bowl, Lansingburgh High’s defensive coordinator Andy Faragon was already out of ideas on how to stop Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s option-based rushing attack.

"Put 10 guys in the box! I don’t know," Faragon shouted in a coaches’ conference on the sidelines.

Burnt Hills’ triple-threat option offense of Evan Nusbaum, Brandon Beatty and Keaton Flint ripped the Lansingburgh defense apart as all three of those rushers finished with at least 131 yards apiece in a 42-21 victory at Steuerwald Stadium on the campus of Shenendehowa High School.

The win marked Burnt Hills’ third consecutive Section II championship and the program’s 30th consecutive victory over a Section II opponent.

Lansingburgh was the last Section II team to top Burnt Hills, having done so in the 2007 Section II Class A Super Bowl.

Out of the Spartans’ pistol formation, where Flint, Burnt Hills’ senior quarterback, lines up three yards behind the center – shorter than a shotgun snap, hence the name – Burnt Hills had its options out of the backfield.

Beatty (16 atts., 139 yds., 4 TD), Flint (14 atts., 137 yds., 2 TD) and Nusbaum (12 atts., 131 yds., 1 TD) scored one touchdown apiece in the first quarter as Burnt Hills (10-0), the Northwest Division’s No. 1 seed, built an early lead.

"Coming into this game, the one thing we wanted to do more than anything was make a statement," Beatty said. "We thought a lot of people thought we were on Lansingburgh’s level, but as a team, we didn’t feel like that. We felt like we could do more than just have a close game."

Burnt Hills’ backs were slippery, breaking tackles and sliding through the Lansingburgh defense no matter who got the ball.

"They’re fast," said Lansingburgh head coach Al McNall. "Like I said all year, they’re very well coached. We knew coming in it was going to be an uphill battle and we had to play mistake-free football."

The Spartans scored on five of their first six drives, and the defense held Lansingburgh’s offense to just one first down before halftime.

Senior running back Anthony Fogarty led the way for the Lansingburgh offense, as he gained 119 receiving yards on five receptions and 71 rushing yards on nine attempts.

Fogarty scored on a 58-yard run just before halftime and caught an 86-yard touchdown pass from Carlos Grillo in the fourth quarter. Marcus Little added a touchdown reception later in the fourth.

Although his team could have thrown in the towel against the state’s No. 3-ranked Class A team, McNall was proud that his players fought right to the end.

"That’s the type of kids they are," he said. "They’re fighters. This is a bittersweet thing for our seniors and I feel bad for them. Hopefully it’s something we can build off of going into next year with our underclassmen."

Burnt Hills advances to a regional round game next week against Potsdam (9-1), the Section X/VII Class A playoff champion, at Massena High.

The Spartans have reached the New York State championship game each of the past two years, losing both times to Rochester-area champion Sweet Home. The Burnt Hills players were hoping that Saturday’s verdict puts them on a track for the Carrier Dome yet again.

“We thought we could make a statement and that’s how it came out,” said Beatty.

Lansingburgh (8-2) lost twice to Burnt Hills in 2010, including a 25-15 opening week victory at home. In between, the Knights won eight straight games and clinched the Southeast Division championship, which all adds up to a successful season in McNall’s eyes.

"A lot of good things came out of this year," he said. "When we got pushed up to the As, nobody expected us to be here. Nobody expected us to be in this game. It’s an honor to play a team like that when nobody thought you’d be there to do it.

"Our kids battled through the whole game. They never let down, even when things were real dismal."

TROY — The close calls have been few and far between for the Troy High School football team in 2010, as the Flying Horses have outscored opponents 333 to 61 through eight weeks.

But Troy’s biggest scare of the season, a 35-28 overtime victory at Niskayuna in Week Six, has given the team confidence this week as it prepares to host the Silver Warriors, the Liberty Division’s No. 3 seed, in a Section II Class AA semifinal contest Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

“Our coaches mention all the time that we’re happy we came that close to them in overtime the first time,” said senior running back and defensive back Jordan Canzeri, at left. “If we just played them for the first time now, we’d say, ‘oh, they’re 5-3 and they lost to La Salle and Columbia in overtime. We wouldn’t think that much of them.

“But we’re really happy they stepped up their game and we both went into overtime. We’re not going to let down at all this week.”

Troy (8-0), the Liberty Division’s No. 1 seed and the No. 7 ranked Class AA team in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association poll, was pushed to the brink by Niskayuna’s passing game in their first meeting between the teams.

Kyle Bayly, Niskayuna’s senior quarterback, completed 20-of-37 passes for 336 yards and one touchdown in Week Six. He threw for 420 yards in an upset victory at Ballston Spa in Week Seven and passed for 221 yards and four touchdowns last week in a Class AA quarterfinal upset at Saratoga Springs.

The leading passer in Section II, Bayly, who plays out of the shotgun set and has a rocket right arm, has completed 109-of-207 passes for 1,631 yards and thrown 12 touchdowns against seven interceptions.

Troy’s defensive secondary, Canzeri and fellow seniors Evan Vadney, Dan Danahy and Ian Blair, pictured at right, know that they’ll have their hands full Saturday afternoon, but they believe they’re ready for the challenge.

“We start off on Monday with a scout look and coach goes through their defense and what they’re going to show us and then their offense, with what they’re going to show us,” Vadney, at left, said. “Then they give us scout sheets a couple of pages thick. Tuesday and Wednesday are all-out. Tuesday is offense and Wednesday is defense. All-out practice. It kind of slows down toward the end of the week, but it’s just getting after it all week.”

Bayly’s main target is senior Nick Schuler, Section II’s leading receiver, who has caught 34 passes for 652 yards and seven touchdowns. Josh Callahan, a junior wide receiver with 26 receptions for 383 yards and two touchdowns, is also a threat for the Silver Warriors.

“The first time we faced them, we weren’t really ready for how much they passed,” said Canzeri. “Every week, once you see a team and see how they play and see what their adjustments are, we just go into practice fix all of what we need to do. We make new plays and all we do is practice, practice, practice.”

Troy’s offense, which has averaged 41.6 points per game, has been potent as well, but the Flying Horses tend to get it done on the ground. Canzeri has rushed for 1,203 yards on 144 attempts this season. Senior Shatiek Lewis, who has been limited by an injured ankle each of the past four weeks, has gained 569 yards on 53 attempts.

Shenendehowa (6-2), the Empire Division’s No. 3 seed, travels to Empire No. 1 Ballston Spa (6-2) in the other Section II Class AA semifinal game. Semifinal winners meet in the Super Bowl on Fri., Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at South Colonie High School.

Niskayuna has not appeared in a Section II Super Bowl since 1996. Troy won that Class A game, 38-6, en route to a New York State title.

“The bottom line is we have to play Troy football,” Danahy, at right, said. “If we do that, we’ll be fine.”

Marcus Little rushed for 78 yards and Anthony Fogarty added a kick return touchdown to spark the Knights. Lansingburgh has won seven straight since losing to Burnt Hills, 25-15, in Week One.
Notable: Lansingburgh defeated Maginn in Troy, 20-14, on Oct. 15 in the regular season finale. The Knights trailed 14-13 in the fourth quarter, but rallied for the victory.

About Academy: The Cadets rallied for a 21-17 victory over Schuylerville in the quarterfinals last week. Senior running back Zay Richardson ran for 152 yards on 27 attempts, scoring twice in the second half.
About Schalmont: The Sabres, who have outscored opponents 311 to 38 this season, posted a humongous 53-6 victory over Cairo-Durham in the quarterfinals last week. Schalmont, which won its first Section II Super Bowl in school history in 2009 thanks to the running of quarterback Vince Gallo, have turned to the passing skills of quarterback Joe Paskevich (44-of-74 for 804 yds., 12 TD, 2 INT) in 2010.
Notable: These teams did not meet this season. In 2009, Academy won the first meeting, 35-18, but Schalmont posted a 32-12 victory over the Cadets in the Class B quarterfinal round.

About Hoosick Falls: The Panthers have relied on a number of offensive weapons this season, including sophomore running back Brad Burns (65 atts., 608 yds., eight TDs) and junior Tanner Williams, who has gained 712 all-purpose offensive yards and scored 14 touchdowns as a runner or receiver. Hoosick Falls went 3-0 on the artificial turf at Stillwater in postseason games in 2009.
Notable: The Panthers won a non-division game in Fonda on Oct. 9, 21-6.

About Whitehall: Running back Josh Hoagland has rushed 137 times for 1,172 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Hoagland is also a threat to throw the football, as he has completed five-of-20 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns.
About Rensselaer: Rensselaer clinched the No. 2 seed with an 18-6 victory over the Railroaders on Oct. 15 and played Canajoharie, a non-playoff Class C team, in a bye game last week. Canajoharie won, 16-0. Rensselaer has won two straight Section II Class D Super Bowl titles and has lost to Moriah (Section VII) in the regional round two years running as well.
Notable: Whitehall topped No. 6 Warrensburg in Class D quarterfinal action last week, 40-20.

Liberty Div. No. 3 Niskayuna (5-3) 

at Liberty Div. No. 1 Troy (8-0)

Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

First game: Troy outlasted Nisky, 35-28, in overtime on Oct. 8. Jordan Canzeri returned the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown, scored the go-ahead touchdown in overtime and finished with 145 rushing yards on 23 attempts.
Niskayuna quarterback Kyle Bayly completed 20-of-37 passes for 336 yards. He passed for 420 in Week Seven and leads all of Section II with 1,631 passing yards.
Semifinal outlook: Troy, which posted four straight shutouts to open the season, has faced been challenged in three of the past four weeks but found a way to win its games.
Niskayuna, which won on the road Friday night, upsetting Saratoga Springs, is one of the hottest teams in Section II and will play with the confidence that it knows it can hang in a competitive game with Troy.

Empire Div. No. 3 Shenendehowa (6-2) 

at Empire Div. No. 1 Ballston Spa (6-2)

Friday, 7 p.m.

First game: The Plainsmen posted a 7-0 victory on Sept. 17, Shen's only victory at Steuerwald Stadium this season.
Semifinal outlook: Shen, 5-0 on the road this season, heads across Saratoga County to take on a Scotties team that lost to Nisky in the final week of the regular season but rebounded with a 27-21 victory over Schenectady Friday night.
The Plainsmen will rely on senior running back Bronson Greene, while the Scotties count on a number of weapons in their traditional option-based rushing attack.

Class A semifinals

 

Southeast Div. No. 3 Bishop Maginn (5-3) 

at Southeast Div. No. 1 Lansingburgh (7-1)

Friday, 7 p.m.

First game: Lansingburgh defeated Maginn in Troy, 20-14, on Oct. 15 in the regular season finale. The Knights trailed 14-13 in the fourth quarter, but rallied for the victory.
Semifinal outlook: The Knights have been red-hot – winning seven straight - since losing to Burnt Hills, 25-15, in Week One. Marcus Little, Anthony Fogarty and Jake Luce form a three-headed rushing threat and junior quarterback Carlos Grillo can also throw the ball when asked.
Maginn upset Northwest Division No. 2 Amsterdam on the road last week. Matthias McKinnon is a threat out of the backfield and Isaiah Phillips is a big-play option at wide receiver.

Northwest Div. No. 3 Queensbury (6-2) at Northwest Div. No. 1 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (8-0)

Friday, 7 p.m.

First game: Burnt Hills blanked a previously undefeated Queensbury team, 48-0, on Sept. 18.
Semifinal outlook: Burnt Hills will be the heavy favorite in this showdown of the Spartans. BH-BL has won 28 straight games against Section II opponents.

Class C semifinals

North Div. No. 2 Greenwich (6-2) vs. South Div. No. 1 Chatham (8-0) 

at Stillwater High School

Sat., 2 p.m.

First game: Chatham won a non-division game in Greenwich, 48-28, on Oct. 15.
Semifinal outlook: Chatham features senior running back and safety Josh Keyes, who is always a threat for a long run or a punishing tackle.
Greenwich, which appeared in the Class D Super Bowl in 2009, squeaked past Voorheesville in a quarterfinal game, 14-8.

South Div. No. 2 Fonda-Fultonville (6-2) vs. North Div. No. 1 Hoosick Falls (8-0) 

at Stillwater High School

Sat., 7 p.m.

First game: The Panthers won a non-division game in Fonda on Oct. 9, 21-6.
Semifinal outlook: Both Hoosick Falls and Fonda have been renowned for their passing games in recent years, and given dry conditions on Stillwater's artificial turf, these teams could turn to the skies in the semis as well. Hoosick Falls won semifinal, Super Bowl and regional round games at Stillwater last season en route to an appearance in the New York State Class C semifinals.

No. 3 Whitehall (5-2)

First game: Rensselaer clinched the No. 2 seed with an 18-6 victory over the Railroaders on Oct. 15.
Semifinal outlook: The Rams, two-time defending Section II Class D champions, lost a crossover game to Canajoharie last week, 16-0. Whitehall trounced Warrensburg, 40-20, in a Class D quarterfinal game. Can Rensselaer get back on the winning track in the semifinals or will Whitehall advance to a Section II Super Bowl game for the first time since 1989?

No. 4 Fort Edward (4-3) 

vs. No. 1 Cambridge (7-0) 

at Schuylerville High School

Sat., 7 p.m.

First game: Cambridge won a regular season game on Sept. 25, 49-8.
Semifinal outlook: Cambridge's Matt Best ran for 262 yards in the first meeting between these teams and he's been practically unstoppable for the Indians this season. Quarterback Billy Pine threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 41-0 crossover victory over Granville, so Cambridge can also get it done through the air.

LATHAM — A banner hangs on the outfield fence of the baseball field at Shaker High School, a testament to the success of the Blue Bison football team this season.

“Who dat? 6-0.”

“I don’t really know who did that 6-0 sign out there, nobody really knows who is doing that, but there is a lot of buzz throughout the school with all the kids,” said senior running back and strong safety Sam Hyatt.

“It’s completely different this year,” senior middle linebacker Cole Lawton, pictured below, said. “Everybody knows who we are. Everybody knows who plays, who does what and who is part of the team. It’s just a really special feeling to be 6-0 and have this much accomplished and we’re not even done yet.”

 Shaker (5-0, 6-0) travels to Troy High (5-0, 6-0) Saturday afternoon in the Section II Class AA Liberty Division regular season finale, the biggest test of the year for either team to this point. Kickoff time, because of another test, the PSATs, has been moved back one hour to 2:30 p.m.

The winner of the game will clinch the No. 1 seed in the Liberty Division and the loser will be No. 2, but both teams are guaranteed a home playoff game in Week Eight.

The Blue Bison were ranked No. 24 in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA poll. Troy was slotted at No. 8 one week after holding off Niskayuna in overtime, 35-28.

Troy appeared in the Section II Class A Super Bowl a season ago, so this type of game is nothing new for the Flying Horses. But for Shaker, which last played a postseason game in 2005, Saturday’s showdown is a chance to show just how far the program has come under first-year head coach Greg Sheeler.

“It’s really something we’re taking day-by-day,” said senior cornerback Brendan Kisselback, pictured above. “We’re 6-0, they’re 6-0 and we’re both fighting for a spot. We already have homefield advantage, but this is a big game for us.”

Shaker last won a Section II football championship in 1969. That is the ultimate goal for the Blue Bison players, but a week-by-week mindset has served the team well so far.

“It’s something to be proud of, but we want to finish the season out before we start thinking of what we’ve done so far,” Hyatt, pictured above, said. “We want to advance in the playoffs and win some games before we start thinking about stuff like that.”

Shaker’s running attack has been paced by junior Kyle Bernard (83 atts., 519 yds., 6 TDs) and senior Conor Alund (39 atts., 404 yds., 5 TDs), who missed the first three games of the season with an injury.

Troy’s backfield features seniors Jordan Canzeri (93 atts., 799 yds., 13 TDs) and Shatiek Lewis (42 atts., 493 yds., 7 TDs), who has managed just one carry the last two games after sustaining an ankle injury at Saratoga Springs.

“We know Troy and the reputation they have as a physical football team,” Sheeler said. “They’ve been the most dominant team in the area the last few years, them and Burnt Hills, of course. We know it’s a big game, we know it’s their homecoming game and they’re going to be excited for it.”

“It’s a really good game just for us in general coming back from a couple of bad years,” Lawton said. “We can finally start to step up and show what we can really do and how good we really are. With the game, it’s going to be a great game. There’s not too much more to say. It’s going to be a great game.”

About ‘Burgh: Jake Luce, who shifted from offensive line to fullback in Week Four, has been instant offense for the Knights. He has gained 246 rushing yards on 29 attempts and has scored six touchdowns since the switch.
Notable: Lansingburgh can clinch the Southeast Division title outright with a victory. Maginn could potentially set up a three-way tie with ‘Burgh and Averill Park with a victory, but ‘Burgh currently owns the quarterpoint tiebreaker and could only be caught by Averill Park. Bishop Maginn won the last meeting between the teams, a 2008 regular season game, 22-16.

Albany Academy (3-0, 5-1)

About Academy: The Cadets will be without starting quarterback Hunter McCarthy for the rest of the season – he injured his knee in a game against Hudson on a rainy night at UAlbany – but feature Section II’s top running back, Zay Richardson. Richardson has rushed for 1383 yards on 101 attempts and has scored 26 all-purpose touchdowns in 2010.
About Ravena: The Indians’ two-headed rushing attack of Corey Watts (70 atts., 565 yds.) and Darryl Ford (47 atts., 348 yds.) has proven effective through six weeks.
Notable: The winner of this game secures the No. 1 seed in the Reinfurt Division. The loser will be No. 2. Both schools have lost non-division games to Class A teams. Academy fell against Albany rival Bishop Maginn and Ravena lost at Averill Park last week. Ravena has won four of the past six games against Academy, but the Cadets won the most recent meeting, a 52-35 decision in a regular season game last year.

Mechanicville (3-2, 3-3)

About Mechanicville: The Red Raiders have been relying on running backs David Funaro (87 atts., 424 yds., 4 TDs) and J.J. Abele (56 atts., 406 yds., 5 TDs) on a 3-1 stretch in the last four weeks.
About Tamarac: The Bengals made due without quarterback Nick Casale last week, posting a narrow 14-12 victory over Corinth. Tamarac is dealing with plenty of injures in 2010, as Nick Feldmaier, the Bengals projected No. 1 running back, has not played since Week Two.
Notable: The Red Raiders missed the playoffs a season ago on a quarterpoint tiebreaker but they control their destiny this year. A victory over the Bengals could potentially vault Mechanicville into the No. 3 seed, although Granville, also alive, is the third team in the race for the final two berths out of the Class C North Division. If Mechanicville wins and Granville loses, Mechanicville and Tamarac are in the playoffs. If Granville wins, a three-way tie is possible. It would be decided by quarterpoints scored against common Class C opponents.

Whitehall (4-1, 4-1)

About Whitehall: Josh Hoagland is Section II’s fifth-leading rusher by yards gained, with 930 yards on 104 attempts. What makes the feat that much more incredible is that Whitehall had a bye in Week Four because of the odd number of teams in Class D. He has rushed for at least 161 yards in every game except the Railroaders’ only loss, which came against undefeated Cambridge.
About Rensselaer: The Rams, two-time defending Section II Class D champions, bounced back from a 30-0 defeat to Cambridge by beating Bishop Gibbons 23-0 last Saturday in Schenectady. Senior quarterback Tim Foust has passed for 519 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Notable: The winner of this game clinches the No. 2 seed and a ‘bye’ in Week Eight, a game against a non-playoff Class C team. The loser will be the No. 3 seed and will host Class D’s No. 6 seed, most likely Warrensburg, in the opening round of the Class D playoffs next week.

Voorheesville (2-2, 4-2) 

at Watervliet (4-1, 4-2)

About Voorheesville: Quarterback Ryan Duncan is the fifth-most prolific passer in Section II this season, having tossed for 772 yards and seven touchdowns. Running back Max Schuster has gained 662 yards on 99 attempts. He scored four touchdowns last week against Taconic Hills.
About ‘Vliet: The Cannoneers posted a 16-8 victory at Coxsackie-Athens last week. Quarterback Brandon Legault leads one of the section’s most pass-happy offenses. Legault has passed for 817 yards and seven touchdowns – against seven interceptions – this season.
Notable: The Blackbirds are one of four teams - Canajoharie, Coxsackie-Athens and Taconic Hills are the other three – still alive for the final playoff berth in Class C’s South Division. A victory at ‘Vliet would put Voorheesville in good shape to clinch the No. 4 seed, although Canajoharie has a slight lead in quarterpoints. Unless Fonda-Fultonville loses at Taconic Hills this week, Watervliet looks like a lock for the No. 3 seed in the South Division and a first-round playoff game at North Division No. 2 Greenwich.
