TROY — With two weeks to play in the high school regular season in Section II, let’s sort out the playoff scenarios in each division. Since the regular season is so short in football, division races often come down to the final week.
In Classes AA, A, B and C, the top four teams from each division qualify for the postseason. The No. 1 seed hosts the No. 4 seed from the opposite division and the No. 2 seed hosts the opposite No. 3.
In Class A, the fifth place team from one division can actually knock out the No. 4 team from the other division if it defeated the other team in head-to-head action, has a better overall record or has a better record against common opponents.
In Class D, the top six teams qualify, with the No. 1 and 2 seeds earning first-round byes and a crossover date with a non-playoff bound Class C team.

I've kept track of divisional quarterpoints throughout the season in the standings below, but ties will be broken using quarterpoints against common opponents. So use the QPs below as another metric to measure the relative strength of a team.
Class AA, Empire Division: Shenendehowa (4-0, 5-0) has the inside track to the No. 1 seed and finishes with home games against Guilderland (1-3, 2-3) and Saratoga Springs (2-2, 2-3). Ballston Spa (4-1, 4-1) is on pace to earn a home playoff game with CBA (2-2, 3-2), Saratoga, Bethlehem (2-2, 2-3) and Guilderland (1-3, 2-3) fighting it out for the final two postseason berths. Albany (0-5, 0-5), with just one division game remaining, has been eliminated from playoff contention.
Class AA, Liberty Division: The Week Seven finale in the Collar City between Shaker (4-0, 5-0) and Troy (4-0, 5-0) will likely determine the No. 1 and 2 seeds in this division. Niskayuna (3-2, 3-2) hosts Troy on Friday and closes out the season with a non-division game at Ballston Spa. Colonie (2-2, 2-3), Schenectady (1-3, 1-4), La Salle (1-3, 1-4) and Columbia (0-4, 0-5), which isn’t exactly out of it yet, will fight for the final two spots.
Class A, Northwest Division: Friday’s game between Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (3-0, 5-0) and Amsterdam (3-0, 5-0) will likely determine the division champion and runner-up. Burnt Hills has won 25 straight games against Section II competition, a streak that dates to the 2007 Class A Super Bowl against Lansingburgh. Glens Falls (0-3, 2-3) and South Glens Falls (0-3, 1-4) are chasing Gloversville (2-1, 2-3) and Queensbury (1-2, 3-2) for the final pair of playoff berths. If the season ended today, it looks like Glens Falls would get a No. 5 seed and knock Scotia-Glenville out of the playoffs because of a better overall record.
Class A, Southeast Division: Lansingburgh (2-0, 4-1) solidified its case for a division title with a 36-34 victory at second-place Averill Park (2-1, 3-2) last Friday. Bishop Maginn (1-1, 3-2) and Scotia-Glenville (1-2, 1-4) square off at Bleecker Stadium Friday night with the winner likely avoiding Burnt Hills in the first round of the playoffs. Mohonasen (0-2, 0-5) looks like the odd team out in the Southeast playoff picture in 2010.
Class B, Reinfurt Division: Ravena (3-0, 5-0) hosts Albany Academy (2-0, 4-1) in Week Seven, with the victor likely to emerge as the No. 1 seed. Cohoes (0-2, 0-5) hosts Hudson (0-2, 2-3) on Fri., Oct. 15 under the portable lights. Cairo-Durham (1-2, 1-4) can make that Hudson-Cohoes game a do-or-die scenario with a victory over the Bluehawks Friday night.
Class B, West Division: Schalmont (3-0, 5-0) has looked unbeatable this season, outscoring opponents 226-26, but Hudson Falls (2-1, 2-3) muddle up the race for the No. 2 seed by knocking off Schuylerville (2-1, 4-1) in Week Five. Broadalbin-Perth (1-2, 1-4) plays at Cobleskill (1-2, 2-3) Friday night with the victor likely clinching the No. 4 seed. Johnstown (0-3, 0-5) isn’t out of playoff contention yet, but the Sir Bills are certainly a long shot for fourth place. Ichabod Crane (0-0, 1-4), which played a Class C schedule, is ineligible for the postseason.
Class C, North Division: Hoosick Falls (5-0, 5-0) has clinched at least a share of first place in the division and has the inside track on the No. 1 seed. Greenwich (4-1, 4-1), which owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Tamarac (3-1, 4-1) can all but lock up the No. 2 seed with a victory at Stillwater Friday. Mechanicville (2-2, 2-3) hosts Lake George (3-2, 3-2) on Friday in a battle for the No. 4 seed. Granville (2-3, 2-3) and Stillwater (1-3, 2-3) also can’t be counted out quite yet. Hoosic Valley (0-4, 0-5) and Corinth (0-4, 1-4) will be playing crossover games in Week Eight.
Class C, South Division: Chatham (5-0, 5-0) is in the same boat as Hoosick Falls. Fonda-Fultonville (4-1, 4-1), with one division game remaining against Taconic Hills (1-3, 1-4) and Watervliet (3-1, 3-2), with division contests left against Coxsackie-Athens (1-2, 2-3) and Voorheesville (1-2, 3-2) will battle for the No. 2 or No. 3 spot. Canajoharie (1-3, 2-3) joins Taconic Hills, Coxsackie-Athens and Voorheesville in the mad dash for the No. 4 seed. Catholic Central (0-4, 1-4), with just one division game remaining, has all but been eliminated from postseason contention.
Class D: Cambridge (4-0, 4-0) took a big step toward the No. 1 seed by shutting out Rensselaer (3-1, 3-1), 30-0, in Week Five. Whitehall (3-1, 3-1) and Bishop Gibbons (2-2, 2-2) will also be gunning for the No. 2 seed and that all-important first round bye. Fort Edward (2-3, 2-3) and Warrensburg (1-3, 1-3) are looking like locks in the No. 5 and 6 seeds, as Salem (0-5, 0-5), which hosts Cambridge this week, has a bye in Week Seven.

About Ballston Spa: The Scotties withstood a furious fourth quarter rally from Guilderland in Week Five, winning a 35-31 nail-biter on a late touchdown catch by Jeremy Defibaugh. After having rushed for no more than 56 yards in a game through Ballston Spa’s first three, Tony Gargiulo has rushed for at least 200 yards in each of the past two games. About CBA: The Brothers went toe-to-toe with Shenendehowa last week, but an interception in the final two minutes allowed Shenendehowa to march in for the game-winning touchdown with just seconds to spare. CBA, on track to clinch the No. 3 or 4 seed out of the Empire Division, has not appeared in the Section II postseason since 2007. Notable: Ballston Spa has won the last three meetings between the teams by a combined score of 95-23. The Brothers last defeated the Scotties in the 2006 playoffs en route to a Section II Class AA Super Bowl title, 55-20.
Lake George (3-2, 3-2)
at Mechanicville (2-2, 2-3)

Class C, North Division
About Lake George: Sophomore quarterback Willie Blunt has passed for 368 yards and rushed for 275 more. Lake George, which had won three in a row after losing to Tamarac in Week One, lost to Granville last week, 18-12. About Mechanicville: The Red Raiders won their sixth straight Indian Bowl last week, blanking Stillwater, 34-0. Running back J.J. Abele had his first 100-yard game of the season, gaining 161 yards on 11 attempts. Notable: These teams last met in the final game of the 2008 season. Lake George won, 14-13, capping a perfect season as a Class C school playing a Class D schedule. Lake George currently occupies the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Division. Mechanicville, which missed the postseason in 2009 despite a 5-2 regular season record, sits in fifth place.

About Hoosick Falls: The Panthers have received an awful lot of production from junior Tanner Williams, who not only plays free safety on defense, but splits time on offense as a receiver and a running back. Williams has gained 275 rushing yards on 37 attempts and has caught 15 passes for 251 yards. His 13 touchdowns make him the third-leading scorer in terms of total points Section II. About Fonda: The Braves won big at Catholic Central on Sunday night. Running back Wally Kowalski (121 att., 765 yds., nine TDs) has powered an offense than traditionally relies heavily on its passing game. Notable: A non-division game, this could be a potential Section II Class C semifinal preview. Teams have not played each other in recent years.
Rensselaer (3-1, 3-1)

About Rensselaer: The Rams failed their first test of the season last week when Cambridge, down from Class C this year, blanked Rensselaer on its home turf, 30-0. Rensselaer has turned to senior quarterback Tim Foust to lead the offense. He has thrown for 463 yards and 10 touchdowns in four games this year as the Rams wait for their running game to take shape. About Bishop Gibbons: The Golden Knights bounced back to .500 last week with a victory over Salem. Quarterback Jon Villanueva has passed for 379 yards and five touchdowns through four games. Notable: These teams played twice in 2009. Rensselaer won a regular season game in Schenectady, 49-14 and then knocked the Knights out of the Class D playoffs with a 50-22 victory on Oct. 30. In fact, Rensselaer has dominated the series recently. The Rams have won the last seven meetings by a combined score of 262-95.

Here are your Section II NFL QB ratings and stat pack following three weeks of action.
Remember, the QB rating is calculated using a formula that balances four statistical categories (completions per attempt, yards per attempt, touchdowns per attempt and interceptions per attempt) into one number one may use to compare quarterbacks who have a wide variation in their pass attempts. A perfect rating on the scale is 158.3, but anything over 100 is generally considered very good.

About Ballston Spa: The Scotties dispatched one rival last week, defeating Saratoga Springs, 21-20, thanks to a blocked extra point late in the fourth quarter. Ballston Spa’s leading rusher is Bill Cook, who has gained an even 100 yards on 11 attempts. About Shenendehowa: The Plainsmen have outscored opponents 75-10 through the first two games of the season. (Both Shen and Ballston Spa have posted blowout victories over Empire Division rival Albany High this season). Bronson Greene and Tony Fusco have made for a terrible twosome in the backfield, as Greene has rushed for 270 yards on 23 attempts and Fusco has added 192 yards on 20 carries. Notable: Ballston Spa won the most recent meeting between the teams, a 34-18 decision on Sept. 17, 2009. The teams split a pair of games in 2008. Shen knocked Ballston Spa out of the first round of the playoffs, 45-41, but the Scotties won a crossover game 32-21, two weeks later.

About La Salle: The Cadets bounced back in Week Two after being shut out by Troy in Week One, but still lost, falling to Guilderland, 28-13. Junior quarterback Garrett Delory has thrown for 273 yards this year, but the Cadets have yet to establish a consistent running game – a calling card of the team under Al Rapp during his decade at the school. About Niskayuna: The Silver Warriors are in a first-place tie in the Liberty Division with Shaker at Troy at this point, but it hasn’t been an easy road for Niskayuna. Rob Hilweh scored four touchdowns in an overtime victory over Columbia last week. Nisky eked past county rival Schenectady High by four points in Week One. Notable: Niskayuna played a Class A schedule in 2009. The last game between the teams was on Sept. 12, 2008. La Salle won, 28-12.
Class C, North Division
Tamarac (2-0, 2-0)
at Granville (1-1, 1-1)

About Tamarac: In Week Two, the Bengals turned the ball over four times yet still trounced Hoosic Valley, 46-0. Mark Morine ran for 150 yards on 19 attempts and senior tailback Nick Feldmaier and junior quarterback Nick Casale have also rushed for over 100 yards through two games. Tyler Larvie is one of Section II’s top receivers with 159 yards and six receptions, but head coach Erick Roadcap will tell you that everything starts up front with his beefed-up offensive and defensive lines. About Granville: The Golden Horde had a dream season in 2009, winning their first six games in a row and winning the first playoff game in school history over Fonda-Fultonville in the quarterfinal round. Granville, however, was shut out in the Section II Class C semifinals by eventual Super Bowl champion Hoosick Falls. Quarterback Jamie Hicks and running back Codi Scriber return in 2010, but the Horde need a new set of linemen to learn on the job this year. Notable: Tamarac last won three games in a row to open a season in 2008.
Class C, South Division
Canajoharie (0-1, 1-1)
at Watervliet (2-0, 2-0)

About Canajoharie: Running back Pete Schwab is one of Section II’s statistical leaders. He had gained 296 yards on 34 attempts out of the Cougars’ backfield this season, scoring a pair of touchdowns. About Watervliet: The Cannoneers enter Week Three in a three-way tie for first place in the Class C South Division with Chatham and Fonda-Fultonville. Chatham hosts Fonda on Friday night. Watervliet has started slow in what wound up being blowout victories over Taconic Hills and Catholic Central, respectively. Senior running back Ryan Manning has gained 169 yards on 22 attempts and is in a third-place tie for third place in the Section II total points race with 38 (six touchdowns, one two-point converstion). Notable: These teams met in Canajoharie on Oct. 2, 2009. The Cougars posted a 20-0 shutout over the Cannoneers, the second game of Watervliet’s five-game losing skid to close out the season.
Class AA, Liberty Division

About Schenectady: The Patriots have lost two games to open the season by a combined 11 points. Niskayuna topped Schenectady by four points in the season opener and Shaker won by a touchdown in Week Two. Senior quarterback and defensive back Tim Cox is also a standout lacrosse player and had made a verbal commitment to play college lacrosse at the University of Albany. He’s passed for 56 yards and rushed for 148 so far this season. About Troy: The Flying Horses have posted eight straight shutout quarters on defense in 2010, which leaves them 16 quarters shy of the streak they put together in 2009. Shatiek Lewis is the team’s leading rusher with 241 yards on 17 carries, while Jordan Canzeri has contributed with 221 yards on 22 attempts. Senior quarterback Brian Marsh has passed for 94 yards and one touchdown. Troy High has outscored opponents 95-0 so far this season. Notable: Troy High played a Class A schedule in 2009 and 2008, meaning the last game between these teams happened during Week Three of the 2007 season. Troy High won that game, a 28-20 decision at Schenectady High School, on Sept. 14, 2007.
Non-division
Lansingburgh (0-0, 1-1)

About Lansingburgh: The Knights were in the news this week for disclosing that three varsity football players have been dismissed from the team and suspended from school for their alleged involvement in a hazing incident with a junior varsity player. Junior quarterback Carlos Grillo has completed 21-of-33 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns in his first two varsity games. Lansingburgh needed his arm after having its ground game shut down last week in Gloversville. About Cohoes: The Tigers have dropped two games to Schalmont and Schuylerville by a combined score of 88-13. Depending on the game situation, Cohoes will feature a pair of quarterbacks in 2010 – Danny DeChairo and Darnell Rafalko. Notable: Last season, these teams met for the first time in four years. Lansingburgh won that Class B Reinfurt Division game, 51-19. With Lansingburgh in Class A this season, this game will not count toward either team’s playoff push.

Here are your Section II QB rating leaders after six weeks of the regular season among quarterback with at least 600 passing yards. Remember, the QB rating formula balances four characteristics (accuracy, yardage, touchdowns and interceptions, all divided by passes attempted) of a QB's game through a complicated formula, giving us a way to judge one player against another.
The maximum rating is 158.3 and anything over 100 is generally considered very good.
