Siena's got Basketball Fever, Maginn Advances

What does Siena's win have to do with section II basketball, you ask? Well, Josh Duell, a junior center and Scotia native, played his high school ball at Christian Brothers Academy in Colonie.

As a senior in 2004, Duell led the Brothers to the state semifinal round in Glens Falls. He decided to go to Vermont after CBA and as a freshman was on the team that upset fourth-seeded Syracuse in the opening round.

This year, the Saints knocked off No. 20 Stanford at the former Knickerbocker Arena, (the Cardinal are now No. 11) and also beat Boise State on the road in the BracketBusters challenge.

Although this marks head coach Fran McCaffery's sixth trip to the big dance, Duell is the lone Saints player with tourney experience.

We'll also have to keep tabs on Jimmer Freddette of Glens Falls, now BYU, and Talor Battle of Bishop Maginn, now Penn State - other section II alums who just might be dancing.

Speaking of Maginn, the No. 2 Griffins (23-1) will take on section I foe Mount Vernon (22-3) in the state semifinals Saturday at 2:15 at the Civic Center in Glens Falls. Tickets are $10.

Even though Shimeek Johnson was under the weather last Saturday against Henninger, the Griffs still made it look pretty easy in the regional final. However, Mount Vernon knocked off the Griffs in the state final game last year, 68-65. The players looked like they were hungry for a rematch after the win on Saturday.

Here is a photo gallery of Mount Vernon from their regional final victory over Binghamton if you're looking to get an idea. Here is an article from the Journal News recapping the game.

Also of note around section II, LaSalle should be naming their new head boys basketball coach by the end of the week. Athletic director Pat Mulcahy told me the school received 12-15 applications for the job and a special committee narrowed the list down to five. Interviews are ongoing.
Any speculation out there to who the new coach should be?
