I had a brief story on the relay team that ran in Tuesday's paper (read that here) but I've since caught up with a few of the other team members and wanted to add their notes.

The team, seniors Vlad Myschuk, Jamal McPherson, Ahshad Thompson and Melique Garcia, along with junior alternate Chris LaRoche, struggled with two handoffs in the championship race, which was a bit of a shock to them and coach Erick Bernard.

"We struggled with the handoffs," Garcia said. "We always seem to have them down pat in the meets. They were the worst we've ever had. We're usually perfect."

And despite their accomplishment - a track and field state title in any event was a first in school history - the reception at home has been pretty chilly. Part of the problem was that school is just out of session (the seniors graduate Thursday), but it's also that Watervliet's track and field teams have never receiving top billing in the Arsenal City. A long history of dominance in football, basketball and baseball make them the predominant sports at the school.

For the wrestling program, bowling and track and field all seem to be on the way up at Watervliet.

"Nobody pays attention to the track team," Garcia said. "We got hoodies and coach got us a gold baton that will get our names engraved on it. We're also getting a plaque. I mean, we were the first team in school history to ever win the states."

The team's success at the state meet the past two years has done one thing, however. It's made officials in the community give serious consideration to the possibility of building a track around the football field at the high school campus. It be easily done. To build a track at the school, the Cannoneers would have to find a new place for a baseball field, since the outfield and the football field overlap - something that wouldn't work with a track ringing the football field.

Still, not having a track was one of the reasons the team members gave for developing their skills.

"The second time (at the state meet) was a lot easier," Myschuk said. "We don’t have a track at the high school and we all ran indoor. We run in the basement in the winter and that helps with our starts. We also go up and down the hills at school. All of that helps us explode and it pushes us harder."

It will be interesting to see how these athletes fare in college as they pursue sports goals.

Thompson will play football at Mount Ida College in Massachusetts.

Myschuk and Garcia will attend Hudson Valley Community College for their core courses, but both are hoping to run competitively in college in the future, perhaps at UAlbany.

One of Watervliet's few track and field alumnae who continued to run at the college level, Brittany Eveleth, just finished her sophomore year at UAlbany.

Three Troy athletes qualified and competed in the New Balance National High School Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina.

James Doran of La Salle Institute finished 14th in the full one mile, running 4:24.0, which is equivalent to 4:22.2 1600m. A full mile is actually 1609 meters. Doran also finished 11th in the 800m in 1:56.99.

Lansingburgh's Alney Tobias (pictured below) ran a 4:30.61 in the mile run good for 19th place. That time is equivalent to a 4:28.81 1600m run.


La Salle's Tyler Washington (pictured below) finished 37th in the 400m intermediate hurdles, running 57.94.

All three will compete on the college level this fall.

Tobais will run cross country and track at the University of Nebraska, while Doran will run cross country at track and Fordham University. Washington, also a tough-nosed football player, will compete in football and track at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Only six high school track and field athletes who go to school in the Collar City are still practicing for the New York State meet. Five of them are from the Emma Willard School.

Emma Willard's 4x400 relay team punched its ticket to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II Track and Field Meet at the Section II qualifying meet last weekend in Johnstown, but it was not something the team had anticipated.

In fact, it was something of an accident.

When one of the original members of the team was too tired to run during a 2010 meet, in stepped short distance sprinter Caroline Gregg to save the day. And just like that, the 4x400 team began to realize its potential.

With Fatima Johnson in the first spot, Gregg in the second, Gabby Gil'Haerem running third and Sara Sobolewski as the anchor, the Jesters set a school record, running 4:06.92 at the Section II qualifying meet, also earning a trip to the state meet.

Their state qualifier performance earned the Jesters the No. 11 seed in the 17-team field, eight seconds behind the No. 1 seeded team, Mercy, from Long Island.

"We also took 10 seconds off our time, which is incredible," Gil’Haerem said. "It was the first time we ran in that order. I think we have the potential to take off more seconds since we all ran well, considering, but I think we can run better. So it’s not too far out of the picture."



La Salle Institute's Tyler Washington, who will compete in the boys' Division I triple jump, is the only other Troy athlete to qualify for the state meet.

Fatima Johnson, who lives in New York City, was not present at Wednesday's practice, but she will join the team in Troy before they head to Vestal.

It's also a very bright group. Gregg will attend Smith College and study vocal performance while Sobolewski will attend Middlebury College and plans to major in chemistry.

It's the second consecutive trip to the state meet for Sobolewski, Gil'Haerem and Gregg, who ran the 4x100 relay a season ago.

Gregg also ran the 100 meters in 2009. This year, Gregg will compete in the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay.

Emily Chebet, a 24 year-old Kenyan, won the 32nd annual Freihofer's Run for Women race Saturday in Albany in 15:12, breaking Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui's course record of 15:18, set in 2005.

The local story was Liz Maloy, a former standout at Holy Names who became a college star at Georgetown in recent years. Although she had won four straight Troy Turkey Trots - a Maloy family tradition - this was her first serious, major 5K road race.

"They went out kind of conservatively and then when they crested the hill they totally took off," Maloy said of the race leaders. "My coach and I were thinking to not go right with them just because it is so hilly and a lot of these girls are marathoners and 10K runners. I don't think I'm quite strong enough yet to run with them for three miles but I'm really happy with how I placed."

COLONIE - The Shenendehowa High School girls track team had a plan and it was executed to perfection.

The Lady Plainsmen employed a well balanced attack to earn a second straight Section II Class A outdoor track and field team title, defeating rival Saratoga Springs 124-113½ at Colonie High School.

"This is what our whole season is about," Shenendehowa head coach Rob Cloutier said. "As a team, this is what we do."

Shenendehowa athletes won five individual events and strategically finished in bunches to gain the most team points.

Saratoga Springs senior Madalayne Smith clears a hurdle at Friday's Section II Class A championship meet. She finished first in the 100 meter dash and 100 meter hurdles, leading the Blue Streaks to a second place team finish.

Individually, Colonie's Kyle Plante won three sectional titles in the 400 hurdles (1:03.3), long jump (17-03.75) and as the anchor leg of the Raiders 4x400 meter relay team.

Saratoga’s Madalayne Smith ran back-to-back first-place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash.

Shaker High School freshman Madison Rowland made an impressive sectional appearance by winning the high jump with a leap of 5-4.

Colonie sophomore Kyle Plante leads the pack in the 400 meter hurdles, which she won in a time of 1:03.3. She also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, three and three quarters of one inch.

The Troy High School girls didn't take home any sectional titles but they did continue to rewrite the school record book. Troy set a new school mark in the 4x400 meter relay for the third time this season with a 4:00.7. Jenette Williams, Alexis Jordan, Courtney Avery and Bianca Jordan took second behind Colonie.

Flying Horses junior Lativia Perkins ran a personal best and new school record 15.1 for a third place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. She'll get another shot to break her own record at state qualifiers next week in Johnstown.

"I'm happy with a personal record," Perkins said. "I'm excited for next week and to have another chance."

Caysie Capano is also headed to state qualifiers for the shot and the discuss. The Flying Horses sophomore took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 33-7.75.

CLIFTON PARK -- Troy High School's Travon Jackson picked a good time to give the pentathlon another shot.

The Flying Horses junior placed first in four of five events and scored 3,268 points to win the pentathlon at the Section II Class A boys track and field championships at Shenendehowa High School.

Jackson placed first in the 110 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and 1500 meters in his first attempt at the pentathlon this season.

"It was a good day," Jackson said after gutting a win in the 1500 meters, the final event of the day.

I caught up with Watervliet High School senior Melique Garcia at Lansingburgh's Knight at the Races meet Friday night.

Garcia had a great story to tell.

During the first football game of the season, he tore his ACL. He worked and worked and worked to get back in shape and has been a blur on the track this spring. He's won almost every 100 meter and 200 meter dash he's entered this season, including a pair of wins at the Knight at the Races.

He made it to the New York State meet a season ago and carried the Cannoneers' 4x100 relay team to a third place finish among Division II teams.

In fact, track and field was just an afterthought for Garcia. He played football since Pop Warner and wrestled his freshman year of high school. Once his football coaches saw his speed, they urged him to pick up sprinting as a hobby.

Another interesting nugget to this story is that Watervliet lacks a track at the high school. Still, that hasn't deterred the track and field team one bit.

They use the hill around the school to train and Shaker High School has always been generous in letting the Cannoneers practice there.

"It’s kind of funny because every other school has a track and we don’t," Garcia said. "But in a way, in benefits us. We run up our school hill and we do different things that normal schools wouldn’t do."

COLONIE -- Sophomore Kyle Plante won three events (100-meter dash, 400 hurdles, long jump) to spark host Colonie High to a second-place finish. Saratoga Springs finished first in the team competition for the seventh straight season.

Also for the Garnet Raiders, junior Tehresa Coles won two individual events (discus, shot put) and sophomore Cassidy Keane won three events to win the pentathlon competition.

Mechanicville 8, Ravena 2: The Mechanicville softball team just continues to win.The Red Raiders remained unbeaten in the Colonial Council with an 8-2 victory over Ravena on Wednesday.
Mechanicville (13-0, 17-2), the champion of the Patriot Division, travels to Cohoes (12-1, 13-3), the Liberty Division champs, for the Colonial title game on Friday at 4 p.m.
Anna Arceneaux hit a home run and two singles for the Red Raiders, while Alysa Russell had three singles and a triple. Catie Vishneowski hit a two-run double for the Indians (6-7, 9-9) in the seventh inning.
Voorheesville 5, Lansingburgh 3: Amanda Gatt and Kelsey DeZalia each had two singles and scored twice for the Blackbirds (6-7 league).
Meg Volz knocked a double for the Knights (8-5, 11-8).
Maple Hill 8, Greenville 2: Maggie Miller tossed a complete game for the Wildcats (7-7, 9-8) and went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored at the plate.

Bethlehem 4, Guilderland 3: Sammy Smaldone drove in Mikayla Shade with the game-winning run in the seventh inning to give the Eagles (13-3, 17-3) the Suburban Council South Division title.
Smaldone finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Schenectady 12, Bishop Gibbons 2: Sophomore Samantha Mahoski hit a home run in her first career varsity game for the Patriots, who also got two singles and a triple from catcher Alexa Lawyer. Amanda Methe hit a triple and a double for the Knights.

Watervliet 8, Lansingburgh 3: Dan Nittinger tossed a complete game and struck out eight for the Cannoneers (7-9, 7-12).
Brandon Legault had two hits and three RBI for Watervliet, while Ryan Manning hit three singles. The Knights (12-3, 12-7) have lost back-to-back Colonial games.
Mechanicville 7, Ravena 3: Josh Coreno hit a solo home run and Andrew Morizio drove in two runs with a single for the Red Raiders (11-4, 13-5).
Sam DeCelle also had two hits for Mechanicville.

Cambridge 9, Schuylerville 5: Kyle Thomas, Thomas Hemmerling, Schuyler Saunders and Brady LaBarron scored two goals apiece for the Indians (1-5, 3-12) in to post their first Wasaren League victory.

Shenendehowa 14, Saratoga 3: Tim Coll scored four goals and added an assist and goalie Bobby Wardwell made 19 saves as the Plainsmen won to wrap up their Suburban Council campaign.
Connor Arnold chipped in with three goals and an assist and Mike Jenkins contributed a goal and three assists as Shen (12-1, 15-1) secured at least a share of the North Division title.

Track and Field
Colonial Council Championships: The Albany Academies swept the boys and girls Colonial Council championships held at Lansingburgh.
The Lansingburgh boys finished in second place, 13 points behind the Cadets.
Watervliet’s Melique Garcia won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.66 and he also won the 200 meter dash in 22.94.
In girls action, Lansingburgh’s Aziza Gamble won the 200 meter dash (26.95). Cohoes’ Meisha Lewis won the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.68) and the 100 meter hurdles (16.54).

SCHENECTADY -- The Troy High girls track team capped a perfect season in the Big 10 Conference Tuesday afternoon as the Flying Horses took home the team title in the Big 10 championships hosted by Schenectady High School.
Bianca Jordan won the 3000 meter run (11:31.2), the 400 meter dash (60.4) and was the first leg of Troy’s winning 4x800 relay team (10:25.5).
Freshman Courtney Avery won the high jump (five feet, zero inches) and pole vault (eight feet, six inches).
Caysie Capano captured first place in the shot put (32 feet, eight and one half inches) and the discus (81 feet, nine inches).
Schenectady finished second as a team, followed by Albany High. The Catholic Central girls placed sixth.
Baseball
Tamarac 4, Stillwater 1: Jon Matala pitched a complete game and struck out seven for the Bengals (3-10, 5-12).
Kyle Bestle drove in the eventual game-winning run with a double in the third inning.

A week ago, the La Salle Institute track team put on a dramatic show against Albany High, nipping the Falcons by a fraction of a second to post a perfect regular season in the Big 10 Conference.

Monday, the Cadets made the season even more perfect by defeating all of their competition in the Big 10 track and field championships, again at Albany High and again with the Falcons finishing second.

The Cadets used a balanced attack, winning five events, to beat Albany by a score of 127 to 121 and complete a perfect league season. An upstart Troy High team took third place with 109 points.

Cornell-bound Denis Hurley captured the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and Tyler Washington won the 400 meter intermediate hurdles and triple jump.

James Doran added a victory in the 800 meters - not a typical event for him - as the Cadets finished the season 9-0 in Big 10 competition.

Albany High School's Jaah-mel Arrington pulls away to win the 100 meter race Monday at the Big 10 track and field championships at Albany High.

Albany dominated in the sprinting events, winning the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash the 110 hurdles and the 4x100 relay.

Troy won the 4x800 and 4x400 relays and also saw Travon Jackson capture first place in the long jump.

Albany's Dashawn Gates clears one of the hurdles in the 110 meter event at Albany High Monday afternoon. Gates finished first in a time of 14.7 seconds.
