Greenwich earned the first Section II baseball title Tuesday night after a rain delay at Joe Bruno Stadium. For the full story, check out Wednesday's editions of The Record and The Saratogian.

The Witches will play Class CC champion Canajoharie in the Section II Class CC/C playoff Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at Veterans Field on Geyser Road in Saratoga Springs.

Stan Hudy covered the game for us and uncovered a great story on this Greenwich team. Here is an excerpt from his story:

It was also special for the players who wore a shamrock with M.A.C embroidered on it in memory of former assistant coach and former mayor of Greenwich, Christopher McCormick, who died in May from complications due to Type I diabetes.

It was during the wake and a few conversations about Mac (McCormick’s nickname) and his love of the Boston Red Sox that a secret was revealed to the adults. Just as a construction worker has buried a Red Sox baseball jersey in concrete during the construction of the new Yankee Stadium, the favor was returned to McCormick and his former stomping grounds, near third base.

His friends purchased a New York Yankee jersey and buried it underneath the Witches baseball field, they did it quietly, secretly and left little evidence … all except some of the dirt from Yankee Stadium they also left for him.

It was a joke between friends, a snicker at the expense of their Boston-loving friend, but they never had the time or the heart to tell him of the prank. When word got out, along with the tears, speeches and memories about Mac, Beck vowed to dig it up … when the curse was broken.

It’s official, the curse is broken, but there is still a moratorium on any shovels being put to use around the Greenwich baseball field.

"We’ll just wait until the season is finally over," Greenwich head coach Duke Beck said. "We still have some games to play."

Nisky has won six Section II titles in a row and ten in total. The Silver Warriors showed why they are the class of Capital Region lacrosse Tuesday night in a sharply-played game.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake goalie Connor Nash prepares to make one of the 17 saves he made in Tuesday's game. He played well considering that the Silver Warriors took 44 shots in the game.

It was also a highly successful season for Burnt Hills, which advanced to a Section II title game for the second time in its four-year varsity history.

First-year head coach Tom Schwan has helped his team improve its lacrosse IQ and he hopes the Spartans can be Suburban Council and Section II competitors again in 2011.

"I can’t speak highly enough about Jason LaPietro, our assistant varsity coach," Schwan said. "He is just a tremendous man in regards to working with young people. He asks them to do things physically they don’t think they can do, and he also got them to mentally do things they’ve never done before.

"We’re really psyched about the future," Schwan continued. "There are a lot of positives, but we understand that they’re better than us and I think 14-4 was exactly how much better they were than us.

For the first time, Hoosick Falls High School fielded a club-level girls lacrosse team in 2010.

The team could not play any members of Section II in games, but the Panthers played a 10-game schedule against teams from Vermont, Massachusetts and New York teams not recognized by Section II. All funds were raised by the players and their parents.

Starting from scratch, baby steps were needed. The players began to learn the game in the winter in the gym, using tennis balls to master the art of throwing and catching. When the weather warmed up, the players ventured into the parking lot...but they were still using tennis balls as they slowly began to learn the sport.

Remarkably, the team finished with a 6-4 record. "Opposing players, coaches and officials marveled when told this was the first time these players had a stick in their hands," wrote head coach Lisa Ferrannini.

The team is currently running a pair of fundraising efforts.

The first is "Getting Pinned." For a $20 donation (with checks payable to the "HFCS Student Council") you can "pin" the victim of your choice. The victim will find two dozen pinwheels blowing in their yard. Simply email hfladypantherlax@yahoo.com to "pin" your victim... and the team does the rest!

The other event is Canines & Cars, a dog expo and classic car show to be held (rain or shine)

Competing in Bethlehem High’s first sectional semifinal in boys lacrosse, Erik Halek and his teammates had nothing to lose.

With the Eagles brimming with confidence which grew throughout the game, Halek, a senior attackman who played through an ankle injury, scored four goals as Bethlehem forged an early lead and held off a furious comeback bid to oust Christian Brothers Academy, 8-6 on Saturday in a Class A semifinal at CBA.

By reaching the first sectional final in the history of the program, the third-seeded Eagles (12-6) denied the second-seeded Brothers (13-5) a trip in what would have been their first title game.

"This is the furthest we’ve gone in school history," Halek said. "This is a huge step for our program."

The Eagles advance to face top-seeded Shenendehowa (17-1) in the Class A final on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the University at Albany.

Love to trade places for a day with: Michael Jordan or Steve Forbes. Someone in his field who is very, very powerful.
Talent I’d most like to have: I’d like to be able to do back flips.
Favorite Meal: Spaghetti and meatballs.
Favorite athletes I watch in different sports: Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs, even though I’m a Mets fan; Lebron James in basketball and (Landon) Donovan of U.S. soccer.
Favorite place to visit: Probably home. When I’m not out playing sports and traveling a lot with lacrosse and stuff like that, I like to stay at home.
Favorite sports teams: New York Mets, Boston Celtics and the New York Jets.
Favorite physical attribute: Being able to jump into certain situations and do certain things to help the team out.
Favorite subjects: Math and History.
Favorite Restaurant: Mario’s in Niskayuna and Lombardo’s in Albany.
Friday night, there isn’t a game and I’m: Get together with a few friends, get a slice of pizza or go see a movie, but mostly I’d be sleeping. I would be resting up because of all the running and everything I’m doing - I love to sleep.
Heroes: For long time was hero was Tiger Woods before the incident happened. On the field, I’d have to say him. But off the field, I would say Jackie Robinson by far he’s somebody to look up to.
Superstitions: A lot of people ask that, but I can’t say because they’ll be broken. I will say that my dad does cut my hair before every single game and I have to sit in the exact same chair.
My Motto: It’s a motto my mom and I came up with that I have written up on the wall - ‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.’

Christian Brothers Academy and Niskayuna High School placed 2 players each on the 2010 US Lacrosse High School Boys All-American Team.

Niskayuna's Ryan Alden (Harvard) and Mark Panneton (Cortland) joined CBA's Jack Reilly (Johns Hopkins) , Dan Sipperly (Bryant) and Shenendehowa's junior goalie Bob Wardwell on the team.

A pair of Clarkson University-bound seniors were named Academic All-Americans. South Glens Falls defenseman Tim Boller and CBA's goalie Shane Hans were both named Academic All-American. Both student-athletes will major in engineering and play lacrosse at Clarkson next year.

Burnt Hills first year head coach Tom Schwan was named Coach of the Year. Jason Gifford, a first-year assistant at Shenendehowa, was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Section II Lacrosse Coordinator Bob Gula was named US Lacrosse Man of the Year.

All recipients will be recognized at the annual Adirondack Chapter dinner.

One year after Troy High won its first playoff game in school history, the Lansingburgh Knights, a second-year program, followed suit.

Senior midfielder Josh Wangler tallied two goals and senior midfielders Charlie Casey and Josh Guilbeault each scored a crucial goal in the final six minutes as Lansingburgh held off Cambridge, 6-4 in a Class C opening-round sectional game on Tuesday.

"This is a huge game for us," Wangler said. "There’s four players on the team - me, Josh Gilbeault, Charlie has been here for a while and (defender) Garrett (Cassidy) - we’ve all been since the start of the program and brought it to where it is. This is huge for this team."

No. 4 Lansingburgh (6-9) advances to face top-seeded Glens Falls Friday at 5 p.m.

It was a monumental win for the Lansingburgh program, but it was also an eventful season for Cambridge, which finished 4-13. Lacrosse is one of the area's growing sports and it's starting to take off in small towns like Cambridge, which bodes well for the future and continued growth of the sport in Section II.

"Our guys ended the season well," Cambridge head coach Tom Pillsworth said. "We started as the smallest and newest school in Section II and we paid our dues early on. … I wish we played a little better and I concede the fact that they’re a good team and I wish them well in the playoffs."

Troy High traveled to Burnt Hills for a Class B playoff showdown against the Spartans.

It was a clash of two young programs, but the Spartans have grown by leaps and bounds this season and it showed as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake posted a 16-3 victory over the Flying Horses.

"We’re getting better but we couldn’t do the basics tonight; we couldn’t throw and catch," said Troy head coach Brian Benner. "We had a lot of turnovers. We threw it away a lot."

The Section II boys and girls lacrosse playoffs are getting very interesting. Troy High's and Lansingburgh's boys teams will be in action Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are hosting first-year program Cambridge in a Class C game, while the Flying Horses head to Burnt Hills for a game under the lights.

La Salle plays at No. 1 seed Shenendehowa Wednesday night.

The girls, who got a head start on the boys, are already in the championship round. All three games will be played at the University at Albany on Wednesday.

TROY -- A rainout earlier in the season opened up a non-league date for the La Salle Institute baseball team and the Cadets brought one of New York State’s top teams, Mamaroneck, to the Collar City Saturday afternoon.
J.P. Sportman hit a home run and scored four times and Will Remillard added a home run, two runs and two RBI for the Cadets in a 14-8 victory over New York’s No. 8 ranked Class AA team at Geer Field.
Garrett Bernardo doubled twice and drove in four runs, while his brother, Nick Bernardo, contributed with a pair of singles, runs, stolen bases and RBI, respectively.
La Salle, the No. 15 ranked Class AA team in the state, improved to 16-4 overall.
Scott Hagan hit two doubles and drove in three runs for Mamaroneck (16-4).
Bethlehem 4, Niskayuna 2: Mike Wollner pitched a complete game, leading the Eagles (4-12, 6-13) to victory over the Silver Warriors (10-6, 12-7) in Schenectady’s Bradford Tournament.
Mechanicville 14, Stillwater 0: Josh Coreno hit a two-run home run and a single and Dylan Guido added a solo home run for the Red Raiders (14-6) in a non-league rivalry victory over the Warriors (1-16). Nick Gaetano tripled and struck out five over six innings of work on the mound for Mechanicville.
Shenendehowa 19, Troy 1: Justin Schnellbaecher hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning for Troy’s (11-5, 12-7) only run in a non-league loss at Shenendehowa. Dan Lenney powered the Plainsmen with two home runs and six RBI.
Shenendehowa 4, Albany 3 (8): Colin Grande stole home to tie the game in the seventh inning and John Craig provided the game-winning hit for the Plainsmen (14-2, 17-3) in the eighth inning.
Josh Cocco hit a two-run home run for the Falcons (4-12, 5-14).
Columbia 9, Troy 1: Kyle Henchey hit a home run, a double and a single, driving in three runs for the Blue Devils (8-8, 10-10) in a non-league victory over the Flying Horses in Clifton Park.

Mike Koberger scored two goals for La Salle and Shawn Quinn made seven saves. No. 8 La Salle plays at No. 1 Shenendehowa Wednesday night in the quarterfinals.
Saratoga Springs 18, Schenectady 8: Ben VanEarden scored five goals and Joe Scully added four for the Blue Streaks (7-10) in an opening round Section II Class A playoff game victory over the Patriots (8-9).

Caroline Gersuk, a Northwestern University-bound senior at the Albany Academy for Girls, played her final home game Wednesday, a 19-4 victory over Emma Willard in the Section II Class C semifinals.

Gersuk and Kaitlin Pericak each scored four goals to spark top-seeded and unbeaten Academy (17-0), which advances to the Class C title game against No. 2 Glens Falls next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the University at Albany.

"This was a nice win for us." said Gersuk, the team’s captain who is in her fifth varsity campaign. "Then I realized this was my last game on this field. I got a little emotional there, but it’s not like our season is over. We still have a lot to do this season."

When the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake varsity lacrosse players woke up Tuesday morning, the history of the Spartans' program could be summed up with a song: One is the loneliest number.

In the four years of the program at BH-BL, the team had won just a single game in the Suburban Council. Tuesday, the Spartans beat Ballston Spa. Thursday, they beat Colonie and on Saturday, Burnt Hills beat Bethlehem, 8-5, tripling its program win total in the span of five days.

Not that anybody really cares, but just a few years ago, I was sitting in on petition meetings at Burnt Hills, hoping a lacrosse team would finally be fielded there. It took a few years for that to happen and it took a few more years for the Spartans to get their feet wet, but the folks in Burnt Hills should be proud of a monumental week in the program's history.

Maple Hill Invitational: Maple Hill’s Katie Roth was named the Outstanding Field Performer, winning the discus and shot put events for the Wildcats, who captured the team title.
Roth’s toss of 107 feet, five inches was the best in the discus and her shot put of 33 feet, 3 and ¾ inches was also good for first place.
Other winners included Watervliet’s Tierney McGlynn in the 200 meter dash (27.1), Berlin’s Rachel Ferris in the 400 meter hurdles (1:13.6) and Maple Hill’s Alyxe Perry in the pole vault (7-0) and Abby Hines in the 110 meter hurdles (17.8).
Maple Hill’s 1,600 meter relay team – Anna Curtain, Taylor Czajkowski, Alyxe Perry and Erin Mosher – also took home a first place finish with a time of 4:23.

La Salle Institute's lacrosse team opened its 2010 Big 10 Conference schedule with an 11-4 victory over Collar City rival Troy High Tuesday afternoon. For the full story, check out Wednesday's edition of The Record.

La Salle raced to an early lead, scoring two quick goals to open the first quarter and piling on a flurry of goals to close the first. The Cadets scored three times in the final two minutes of the period, giving them the head start they would use to post the 11-4 victory over the Flying Horses.

Brett Bernardo, a junior midfielder, scored three goals and Shawn Quinn, a senior netminder, made 13 saves in goal. The Record asked those two players about the game afterward:

The Troy vs. La Salle rivalry certainly extends to the lacrosse field as well, even if Troy High has yet to provide their southside counterparts with a truly competitive game yet.

As head coach Brian Benner continues to gradually improve the Troy High program, the Cadets know that one of these days they could be caught by surprise. And that's exactly why La Salle head coach John Coleman prepared his players for this one like it was a sectional contest.

"Coach Benner has done an outstanding job in the last three years," Coleman said. "We’ve come from where it was hard to get our kids up. Now, I told them all week, ‘This is going to be tough. Troy has come a long way and they’ve worked really hard."

"We worked hard and we knew we had to come out fired up right away," said Bernardo. "That helped a lot. I think what helped us the most was that we had our heads in the game. We were into it, ready to go and we weren’t goofing around. We were ready to go."

Bernardo did not pick up the game until he was a freshman at La Salle, but he's quickly developed into a natural in the midfield. He's also a huge component of La Salle's offensive strategy.

"We just try to pick up on a mismatch and we go with that, whatever we can see on the sideline," said Coleman. "We try to pick out a mismatch between whoever is guarding Brett and let him highlight his skills."

Quinn, a senior, was also a late bloomer of sorts. He starting playing as a sophomore.

Take away La Salle's two quick goal-scoring spurts and the Flying Horses would have been right in the thick of things. Still, Benner had to be pleased with the whole picture and especially with how his team played in the second and fourth quarters.

"Goal-wise, we reached most of our goals today," Benner said. "To think about it, four years ago, this game would have been 25-2. We probably split that in half."

Keep your eye on La Salle in the Big 10 this season. They may not have one big superstar player and they may not master any one particular facet of the game, but the players are willing to sacrifice their personal goals for the sake of the team's.

"Every day, I ask the kids, ‘What can you do to make the team better?" Coleman said. "I’m not worried about you individually, but what can you do to make us better?"

There was a ton of high school action Saturday, so here is a brief roundup.

Columbia and Shen share Massa title: Columbia High School freshman Caitlin Cooper pitched a three-hitter in her varsity debut in the circle in a 9-1 victory over Newburgh and she added a home run and two RBI in a 6-5 victory over Kingston in the nightcap.
Hillary Faas added a two-run home run in the opener and Megan Hallenbeck went 6-for-7 with three doubles for the Blue Devils (2-0, 6-0) in the tournament.
Shenendehowa also defeated both downstate teams as the Suburban Council rivals shared the first place title in the eighth annual Christina Massa Memorial Tournament. The Lady Plainsmen topped Newburgh 5-0 and defeated Kingston 3-0, allowing just two hits in each game.

Hoosick Falls wins Lansingburgh Invitational: Ashley Kovage pitched a five-hitter and doubled and singled to lead Hoosick Falls High School’s softball team to a 7-0 victory over the host Lady Knights in the championship game of Lansingburgh’s Invitational Tournament at Knickerbacker Park.
Marissa Davendonis also had two hits and scored twice for Hoosick Falls, while Meg Volz had two hits for Lansingburgh.
Hoosick Falls’ also pitched a shutout earlier in the day, allowing just one hit while blanking Duanesburg, 1-0, outdueling the Eagles’ Dani Henner. Both hurlers struck out 13. The Panthers scored the only run of the game in the first inning when Kovage walked, moved up on an out and came home on the game’s only error.
Lansingburgh defeated Greenwich 10-4 in another opening round contest. Sarah Cipperly singled three times and drove in a run for the Knights (1-1). Volz added two singles and an RBI. Sam Woitkoski, who earned the win in the circle, added a two-run single.

Tamarac 10-15, Cairo-Durham 0-1: Brandi Warner and Chelsie Matala hit a pair of singles in a 15-1 victory over Cairo in the nightcap and Emily Johnson singles twice and struck out seven in a 10-0 shutout as the Bengals (2-1) swept a non-league doubleheader against the Indians.
Missy Urkevich added a double and a single for the Bengals in the opener.

Baseball
Saratoga Springs 10, Ballston Spa 0: Joe Moore pitched a no-hitter with eighth strikeouts and Luke Fauler added a triple and a double for the Blue Streaks in a Suburban Council victory over the Scotties (0-2, 0-2).
Kyle Willmott added four RBI for the Blue Streaks (2-0, 3-1).

Shaker 15, Niskayuna 10: Jeff Hoffman and Derek Gardella smacked two doubles apiece for the Blue Bison (1-1, 2-1) in a Suburban Council victory over the Silver Warriors (0-2, 1-2).

Albany 3, Bethlehem 2: Stephen Richards hit the go-ahead double in the sixth for Albany and Evan Almindo drove in the game-winning run in the seventh in a non-league victory over Bethlehem.

CBA/La Salle Relays: The Bethlehem boys and the Colonie girls successfully defended their titles from last year in the 11th annual CBA/La Salle Relays.
Troy High’s girls’ 4x400 relay team finished first, as did the Flying Horses’ discus entry. Troy, as a team, placed third.
The La Salle boys placed second as a team, winning the 4x400, 4x800 and 4x1600 relays. Troy’s boys long jump team finished first, as the Flying Horses placed fifth as a team.

Guilderland 18, Ballston Spa 1: Sam Schmitt had only to make a single save in a Suburban Council victory for the Lady Dutch (3-1).

The Record's high school lacrosse expert, Chris Fitz Gerald, took a trip to Averill Park on Friday for a story for our annual girls lacrosse preview, which will be published Sunday.

Saratoga Springs won the game, 12-4, but the Lady Warriors still have an interesting story to tell.

Averill Park has advanced to the Section II Class B title game each of the last three season and they're hoping 2010 is the year they finally get over the hump.

"We’ve been to the finals three straight years and had a core of girls that we were strong and graduated," AP head coach Scott Reynolds said. "We’re trying to find people to step up and take over those responsibilities."

"We just have to play a lot differently then we did last year," said Amanda Fitzgerald, who is in her fourth year at the varsity level. "We’re still trying to put everything together and finding where players can play their best."
