Cadets are Collar City's Best; Saturday News and Notes

La Salle third baseman Kyle Charron watches his throw home, which was in time to get a Bishop Gibbons base runner in a game last Friday. (J.S. Carras — The Record).

Great day for baseball at Geer Field at the Uncle Sam Tournament on Saturday.
Lansingburgh and La Salle played the game of the tournament in their opening round matchup. The Knights scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 13-12 lead and La Salle scored a single run in the bottom of the inning to force extras. However, Brian Beaury pitched great in relief, holding the Knights scoreless over the next three innings.
In the bottom of the tenth, Charron singled in Jared Reardon for the game-winning run.

"I think we got out of it what we were looking for," said Lansingburgh head coach Dave Bestle. "Nobody gave us a chance to play today, but any team can beat any other team on any given day."
Although the Knights did not move on to the championship game, Bestle felt the effort bodes well for the Knights' sectional hopes.
"If we can play like this next week, I like our chances in the sectional first round."

Twice in the opening round game did La Salle's Lukas Bridenbeck ground to short with the winning run only 90 feet away. Twice did Lansingburgh shortstop Joe Winston nail the winning run at the plate.
Bridenbeck atoned in the title game against Troy. With the game tied at four, with two outs and an 0-2 count, Bridenbeck sailed a pitch over the right-center fence, enough for a 6-4 Cadets win and the third Uncle Sam title for La Salle (16-0, 22-0) in the past four years.

"It's always good to end the season on a good note," Bridenbeck said. "We came into this a little lackadaisical but as long as we make the plays when we have to make the plays and hit when we have to get the hits, we'll be fine."

La Salle sophomore hurler Dave Roseboom was great in the final, excepting the third inning, where Troy scored four runs on no hits. Roseboom struck out 11 and allowed only three hits, two to Troy's Annibal Maldanado, for the complete game win.

The Cadets are ranked No. 1 in the state and are the five-time defending Big 10 champions, but they've been knocked out in the first round of the sectional playoffs the past two seasons.
We will see who the Cadets draw next weekend when the pairings are announced on Wednesday.

In softball, a tough day for the homestanding Mechanicville Red Raiders in the Mechanicville softball tournament on Saturday. Mechanicville, ranked No. 3 in the latest class C softball poll, faced the state's No. 1 B team, Hoosic Valley in their first game of the day.
Although Hoosic Valley's Jen Mineau allowed a home run to Kelly Murphy, the Indians held on for a 4-1 victory.
Sam Anderson had a two-run homer, which proved to be the difference.
Hoosic Valley went on to beat Glens Falls 17-0 in their second game.

Mechanicville moved on to play the state's No. 1 class A team, South Glens Falls. The defending class A state champions remained undefeated on the season with a 3-2 victory.

While the Red Raiders lost two games - no one in the state is playing a tougher non-league schedule than they are. Mechanicville will have its hands full in the sectional tournament, especially with tough teams from the WAC, but these non-league games should toughen them up for a long playoff run.

With Hoosic Valley and South Glens Falls looking strong, don't forget Shenendehowa in the AAs, section II should be loaded heading into the state playoffs.

The Lady Fordians from Waterford claimed their third straight CHVL co-championship, tying with Germantown. Waterford was knotted with Germantown in 2006 and Loudonville Christian in 2007.
In that vein, here are the final regular season standings for our local softball teams.
