The Record's 2009 All-Area high school softball team

Troy High School senior Shannon Jones (pictured above) was named The Record's 2009 High School Softball Player of the Year.

TROY - High school softball in the Capital District is typically defined by phenomenal pitching performances, as double-digit strikeout totals and shutouts are the norm rather than the exception. Only one student-athlete in the Capital District consistently drew praise far and wide for her abilities with the bat over the past four seasons from opposing players, coaches, umpires and parents - Troy High School’s Shannon Jones.

Her 2009 output was simply astonishing. Jones had 38 hits in 70 at-bats, hit eight home runs, scored 38 runs and drove in 29 for the Flying Horses, who won a fourth consecutive Big 10 Conference regular season title.

Th
e Siena College-bound senior also made a seamless transition from center field to shortstop, earning 2009 High School Softball Player of the Year honors from The Record.

Jones’ slugg
ing percentage (the number of total bases per at-bat) was a jaw-dropping 1.185 and she reached base at a 71% clip. Her prowess in the batter’s box was so well-known that many pitchers never gave her anything to hit, figuring a walk was a better decision than letting Jones swing away.

"Sometimes it was frustrating because I want to help the team out by gettin
g a hit and getting things started," Jones said.

A first team All-New York State Class AA player for the second consecutive season, Jones did so for the first time as a shortstop. First-year Troy High head coach Casey Halloran admitted she did not have to do much coaching with Jones and her swing, but the two did put some effort into the defensive conversion.

"Shannon is
a great kid, but I did have to work with her a little bit at shortstop, which was a position she hadn’t played in a while," Halloran said.

Jones, who was named the 2009 Section II Player of the Year before the S
ection II championship games on June 5, will join a bumper crop of former Section II All-Stars at Siena College, which is rebuilding its program around local talent under head coach Deanna Parks. Shenendehowa senior Mandy Ferro will also play for the Saints, following in the footsteps of Mechanicville’s Lindsey McKeever and Troy High grad Courtney Brinkman.

She s
truck fear in the heart of every pitcher she faced for the past four years and became a household name around the Capital Region, but Jones, despite the four Big 10 titles, never had the chance to represent Section II in the New York State regional round. That doesn’t bother the unflappable slugger.

"I would have liked to win a sectional ti
tle," Jones said, "but I think when I was on the field I did everything I could and I put my heart on the line."

Local high school pitchers will let out a big sigh of relief next spring when they see a Troy High lineup without a Jones. The Flying Horses, on the other hand, are already auditioning for their next big-time hitter.

"We’re
going to be young and we’re really going to miss Shannon and her cousin Emily, too," Halloran said. "We’ll just have to try our hardest to fill that hole next year."

Lansingburgh High School head coach John Cipperly (pictured above) was named The Record's 2009 High School Softball Coach of the Year.

TROY - Lansingburgh High School varsity head softball coach John Cipperly has been coaching the team for so long, he can’t quite remember the exact year he took the top job.

He has seen many changes in the game since the early 1990s and made many adaptations, but his biggest innovation – employing an entourage of assistant coaches – proved to be just what the Lady Knights needed in 2009.

Jeff Glikes, Jim Volz, Paul Woitkoski, Ken Church and Stephanie Martinelli (nee Goodspeed), who pitched for Cipperly the last time Lansingburgh won a Section II Class A title in 2000, provided Cipperly an excellent support staff and gave the Lansingburgh players plenty of one-on-one attention in practices.

No. 2 seed Lansingburgh handed South Glens Falls a 4-2 defeat in the 2009 Section II Class A championship game, returning the Knights to the New York State regional round for the first time in nine years. For their efforts, Cipperly and his staff have been named The Record’s 2009 High School Softball Coaches of the Year.

"I’m old enough, I guess, to not have any ego concerns or be worried that everyone might think I’m the only guy in charge," Cipperly said. "I had to step back and take a look at how we could all get along well, both the players and the coaching staff. I think that was the key in that everybody contributed in some way."

South High was Lansingburgh’s nemesis in postseason play after 2000, as the Bulldogs won seven Section II titles from 2001-08.

But Cipperly and his staff kept the Knights grounded throughout the year, setting reasonable goals as the season progressed rather than instill a Section II championship dream on the first day of practice.

Lansingburgh won its invitational tournament, defeating Tamarac and Hoosick Falls, but lost by one run to Troy in the Uncle Sam Tournament title game and finished second to Mechanicville in the Colonial Council regular season by a single game.

Once it came time for the three-game run through the Section II playoffs, the Lady Knights set their sights on the short season knowing exactly what they needed to do to bring a Class A championship back to North Troy.

"We didn’t go into sectionals in awe," said Cipperly. "We went in with a purpose. And with our slogan ‘Make it Happen’, we honestly made that our approach."

With a loss to Malone-Franklin Academy in the regional semifinal, the Lady Knights finished the season 20-5, ranked No. 6 among Class A teams in New York State.

Cipperly may have coached teams with more talent top-to-bottom in the past, but he said he had never seen a team with as positive an attitude as his 2009 squad.

"When we had success in 2000, we had lots of athletic ability and lots of kids that were confident," Cipperly said. "They knew they were good.

"But the impressive thing about this team," he continued, "was that the kids didn’t necessarily come into the season seeing themselves as being so good, whether they were good or not. But they worked well as a team, believed in each other and knew that they could compete on any given day."

2009 Colonial Council softball All-Stars

(The Record's All-Area baseball, softball and lacrosse teams are nearing completion - stay tuned on this page and we will post the publication dates for those sections as soon as we're sure when they will run in the hard copy. In the meantime, here is the 2009 Colonial Council softball All-Stars team, submitted this afternoon, as voted by the league's head coaches.)

League MVP
Sarah Harrison Jr., P, Cobleskill-Richmondville
Batted .453 with 30 runs and 28 RBI
Pitching: 18-7, 0.66 ERA, 310 Ks, nine shutouts.

I didn't get to see Harrison pitch this season - Cobleskill is a long way from Troy - but from what I heard from Colonial Council coaches during the season, this was a deserving pick. A tough lefty, Harrison baffled batters all year long, as proven by 310 strikeouts.

First Team

Anna Arceneaux Soph., P/2B, Mechanicville
Batted .472 with 42 hits (6 double, 1 triple, 1 homer) 27 RBI.
Pitching: 17-1, 0.65 ERA, 174 Ks, (123 inn)

Arceneaux did it again in 2009, leading the Red Raiders to a second consecutive New York State title, this time in Class B. She raked at the plate - her only home run came against Cohoes in the Section II Class B quarterfinals - and allowed just over one half of one earned run per start.

Erin Glikes Sr., P, Lansingburgh (2008 MVP)
Pitching: 19-5, 0.66 ERA, 239 Ks (163 inn), batting average allowed .127.

Glikes couldn't repeat as Colonial Council MVP or lead the Lady Knights to a league championship, but she did the next best thing - claim a Section II Class A title. She'll pitch for American International College in the future.

Meg Volz Soph., C, Lansingburgh
Batted .511 with 47 hits (9 doubles, 7 triples and 3 home runs) with 23 RBI.

The Colonial Council has earned a reputation as one of the better softball conferences in the state as Lansingburgh, Mechanicville and Cohoes have all represented the league well in postseason play in recent years. And with the caliber of pitchers in the league - Arceneaux, Harrison, Mechanicville's Shannon McBride - Volz's 47 hits in one season becomes that much more amazing a statistic. She was a nightmare for opposing pitchers to start off the game and was a middle of the lineup slugger leading off for the Lady Knights.

Shannon McBride Jr., SS/P/2B, Mechanicville
Batted .432 with 35 hits (9 doubles and 1 triple) 22 RBI
Pitching 8-3; 1.05 ERA, 99 Ks, (79 1/3 inn)

McBride did a little bit of everything this year for the Red Raiders. She split the pitching duties with Arceneaux during the regular season and provided Mechanicville a big bat and a great defensive presence at short in the postseason.

Kelsey Hines Soph., 3B/2B, Mechanicville
Batted .441 with 45 hits (14 doubles, 4 triples and 1 home run) and 29 RBI.

Hines, a transfer from Shenendehowa, brought a ton of power to the Red Raiders' lineup. She hit a towering double in the state championship game against Fredonia and played well in the infield, either at second or third, depending on Mechanicville's pitching situation that day. She'll be back next year, along with every other player on a seniorless Mechanicville roster.

Sarah Cipperly Jr., SS, Lansingburgh
Batted .419 with 36 hits (3 doubles, 5 triples and 1 home run) and 19 RBI.

Cipperly was the RBI machine in the middle of the Knights' lineup - but her most important asset was a rocket for an arm in the hole at shortstop. She only made five errors all season, an impressive number who saw many groundballs behind Glikes.

Courtney Dayter Fresh., P, Cohoes

10-8 with a 1.97 ERA, Dayter did an admirable job trying to fill the shoes of Courtney Galuksi, who took the Tigers to the NYS Class B Final Four in her junior and senior years.
Dayter struck out 126 batters in 124 innings and hurled five shutouts. Along with freshman batterymate Courtney Gumprecht, she'll be a force in the Colonial for years to come.

Kelsey DeZalia Jr., 3B/SS, Voorheesville
Batted .375 with 24 hits (10 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run) and 16 RBI.

Second Team
Sarah Karpovich Sr., CF, Holy Names
Bianca Bojarczuk Jr., 2B/P, Schalmont
Katie Vishneowski Soph., CF, Ravena Coeymans Selkirk
Kate Brust Soph., C/OF, Cobleskill Richmondville
Jeana Longo Sr., 3B/P, Schalmont
Baillie Tetrault Soph., 2B, Cohoes
Britni Rosato Sr., 3B, Ravena Coeymans Selkirk
Alysa Russell Fresh., SS/3B, Mechanicville
Kolbi Smith Jr., C, Holy Names
Britney Creed Jr., SS/LF, Voorheesville
Ashley Miley Jr., SS, Schalmont

Honorable Mention
Mechanicville - Joelle Di Domenico Jr 1B, Abby Maiello Fresh CF, Danielle Manupella Soph RF
Lansingburgh - Kayla Cole Jr 3B/OF, Melissa Bell Sr 1B, Sam Woitkoski Soph 2B/P

No more two-a-days?; Porcelli says goodbye to 'Burgh

It was a busy day for high school football, with the first day of practice just under two months away.

The National Athletic Trainers Association announced at its national meeting on Thursday that it recommends high school football teams ditch two-a-day practice sessions for the first week of practices and do doubles every other day in the second week in an effort to combat heat-related illness.
Since 1995, 39 football players from around the nation - at all levels - have died because of heat stroke or similar accidents.

Section II football coordinator Gary VanDerzee, also the head coach at Ravena, said that because of a trickle-down effect - many colleges have already shied away from two-a-days - he wouldn't be surprised if the NYSPHSAA eventually implements the same rule for high school teams.

But high school teams in this area have an interesting challenge in that they have a mere three weeks to prepare for their first game. College teams have the luxury of spring practices and a true year-round atmosphere, making the loss of double sessions that much easier to stomach.

Section II coaches are all well-educated in hydration and heat-related illness warning signs and local teams have escaped the tragedy that has struck in many towns across the country in the past 15 years. Without the daily oppressive humidity that schools in Texas and Oklahoma and Florida may face, NATA's recommendations do not appear to be directed at schools in this area.

Safety, however, is always the first priority of the NYSPHSAA, and if they get a whiff of this idea working well in other locations, there isn't much individual coaches can do to argue with the Safety Panel's decision, should they ever decide to go that direction.

"We’re a pretty adaptable bunch and we would find a way to make it work," VanDerzee said. "We would find a way to keep producing quality teams and quality programs."

Knock on wood, but teams have done well keeping their student-athletes safe in this area of the country in recent years. But what would an elimination or reduction in double sessions mean to the quality of high school football in New York, which already lags behind the Southern states and places like Ohio and Pennsylvania?

"If we do that for New York State high school football, they would need to look at lengthening the season from nine to 11 games," Cohoes head coach James Ducharme said, "because we already play probably the least amount of games of any state already and it just doesn’t match up."

Check out the full story in Friday's edition of The Record.
What do you think? Could teams survive without two-a-days? What about soccer, field hockey and cross country and other sports that start practices in the hot August sun?

--
Former Lansingburgh head football coach Pete Porcelli was officially introduced as the Albany High Head coach Thursday night at the school's Board of Education meeting.

The Albany job did not open up until early June, when Brian Spicer, who guided the Falcons to an 0-9 record in 2008, announced he would not return. Porcelli interviewed and found it hard to turn down the job, since he had hungered for the position after coaching Albany's lower level teams through most of the 1990s.

"Unfortunately it had to be this late in the game and that doesn’t give me time to prepare the way I want to," Porcelli said. "It’s tough for the kids (at Lansingburgh) because we put in a good six months of training, lifting and running and going to weightlifting competitions, but this just came about and I’m really going to miss the kids."

Porcelli was quick to thank Lee Bordick, Dave Bochette and Dave Kissick, Lansingburgh’s former Superintendent, Athletic Director and Principal, respectively, for the opportunity they gave him in 2001.

Porcelli and Schenectady's Carm DePaolo, who resigned last week, became the latest high school football coaches to step down after successful runs.
