Shenendehowa hockey follow-up

I reported on Saturday night that the Shenendehowa hockey team was missing many of the players on its roster and when I asked head coach Juan de la Rocha why after the game, he said the players had been suspended for a "violation of team rules."

Our friend Stan Hudy at The Saratogian followed up on the story and found out that the players had been suspended for using marijuana on a team trip a few days prior to the game against La Salle.

It's been a rough year for the six-time defending Section II Division I champions, who have stumbled out of the gate to a 3-8-1 start. The latest news is just another twist in what's been a topsy-turvy season in Clifton Park.

Shen head coach de la Rocha just sent us an email with his official statement, quoted in its entirety below:

"The Shenendehowa Hockey Team has always prided itself on being a hardworking and dedicated athletic team on and off the ice. We are proud of the 16 players who honored the team and the athletic code of conduct. Right now our focus is on preserving their dignity and the dignity of the Shenendehowa Hockey Program."

16 players honored the code of conduct? Well good for the 5 practice players for not getting in trouble with the 12 on their team when they were home or not rooming in the hockey team's rooms! Good for the goalie who wasn't there! Not to be sarcastic or take away from those kids, but aren't we down to 10 now? 6 didn't really have a choice to participate or not.
