Eighth graders making waves in 'Vliet; LSI icers defeat long-time foe

Watervliet's two veterans came up big in Saturday's victory over Lansingburgh, but a pair of eighth graders are having a big impact on the Watervliet program.
Ailaya Demand (No. 1, above) is a starting guard, while Lashana Tolliver has played well as the first off the bench. After losing eight of the 10 players from the 2007-08 team, the Lady Cannoneers are off to an 8-1 start this season. (All photos by Tom Killips - The Record)

Watervliet's Tierney McGlynn (No. 20, above) scored a game-high 19 points in Saturday's 50-38 victory over Lansingburgh. She and Jen Gates - the only two returning players from last year's Class CC/C championship team, are also a big reason why the Lady Cannoneers are off to a great start. Read about Saturday's game here. Watervliet gets more challenges this week when they travel to Voorheesville on Tuesday and host Holy Names on Friday night.

Lansingburgh's Alexia Brown scored 10 points for the Lady Knights on Saturday. Lansingburgh made only two of the 15 free throws they attempted on Saturday, a problem that's plagued the team all season.

La Salle's Caleb Crowley made 24 saves - 17 of those coming in the second period - to lead La Salle to a 3-2 CDHSHL victory over Shenendehowa Saturday evening.

The Plainsmen were playing shorthanded as only 10 of their regular 23 players dressed for the game. Shenendehowa head coach Juan de la Rocha said the players had been suspended for "a violation of team rules" and there are different timetables for their return to the team.

Team captain Kyle Hunter, normally a defenseman, has been playing goalie in the interim. He last played in net at the mite level, which is for players aged eight and under.
