Julius Girmindl Memorial Tournament Recap

La Salle's Mike Murray (54) played well in the 2008 Girmindl Tournament at Shaker High School, earning All-Tournament team honors and leading the Cadets to the championship game. La Salle, however, was no match for Mount St. Michael Academy of the Bronx, who pulled off a 66-38 victory in the championship game. (All photos by Tom Killips - The Record).

Mason Horne (with ball, above) had a great game against Shaker in the opening round, scoring 14 points and converting a pair of three-point plays late in the fourth quarter that paved the way for a 52-50 La Salle victory on Monday. He was limited to seven points in Tuesday's championship game.

La Salle's Marquis Campbell drives to the hoop against Mount St. Michael on Tuesday night at Shaker High School. La Salle head coach Steve Sgambelluri called the Cadets a "faceless team" after the game, meaning they don't have a single superstar to look to every night. Campbell is one of the La Salle players that will have to step up if the Cadets wish to push their way towards the top of the Big 10 in the second half of the season.

La Salle junior Mike Murray goes to the hole against Shaker in Monday's opening round of the Julius Girmindl Memorial Tournament. Girmindl coached at Shaker for twenty years and amassed more than 300 victories in his career, which also included a stint at Cobleskill. He won six Suburban Council championships at Shaker and won a Section II title at the conclusion of the 1978-79 season.

La Salle's J.P. Sportman maneuvers along the baseline in Monday's opening round game against Shaker. In the consolation game, Colonie held on for a dramatic 65-64 victory over crosstown rival Shaker. The Blue Bison called a timeout to set up a last-second shot for the second consecutive day, but with only 0.6 seconds remaining, a pass to center Robert Johnson did not have much hope for success and the buzzer sounded before he could get a shot off.

Colonie's Herb Tedford and Shaker's Janique Lanier were named to the All-Tournament team along with Mount St. Michael's Will Williams and Nigel Mitchell. MSM's Pete Aguilar was named tournament MVP and his two-day 44 point total was the most in the tournament since Brian Monahan scored 49 for Christian Brothers Academy in 2002.

This was the first installment of the Girmindl Tournament since 2005 as scheduling conflicts caused the tournament to be scratched in 2006 and 2007.
