Softball Sectionals Open; Poll Released - Section II Movin' On Up
La Salle's Pat Hussey (right) controls the ball against CBA's Marc Meybaum during the second quarter of Tuesday's Section II Class A playoff game at CBA. (J.S. Carras — The Record)
I caught the opening round sectional lacrosse game between CBA and La Salle last night, and it was quite an exciting, if chilly, contest. La Salle scored two quick goals in the third quarter to stake a 3-2 lead, but the Brothers stormed right back.
Andrew Vivian scored a pair of goals and assisted on a Dan Sipperly goal in the fourth quarter to give the Brothers a 7-3 victory and a date with Colonie in the Class A quarters on Friday. It is the fourth straight season CBA has advanced to the sectional quarterfinals and this comes on the heels of the Brothers' fifth straight Big 10 championship.

In softball action, sectionals began today with opening round action in Class AA and Class B. We have not received all the results yet, but here is a sampling of what happened on Wednesday.
Check out Thursday's Record for the full recap of the Catholic High-Colonie game. Colonie scored seven runs in the fifth inning to claim a 10-1 victory over the Crusaders.

Guilderland 5, Bethlehem 2: The 12-seed Lady Dutch pulled a big upset over the Eagles thanks to two RBIs from both Sara Heller and Michelle Giwerc.
Schuylerville's Mikayla Wells winds up for a pitch against Broadalbin in Wednesday's Section II Class B playoff game. Wells tossed a five-hitter and struck out 13 in the Black Horses' 5-0 victory. (ED BURKE/The Saratogian)
Schuylerville 5, Broadalbin-Perth 0: In Class B, Bridgette Plummer and Stephanie Ostrander each scored two runs and recorded two base hits as the fourth-seeded Black Horses advanced to meet No. 5 Saratoga Catholic on Friday at the Adirondack Sports Complex at 5 p.m.

Now, about that poll...
Out of five classes, Section II has three No. 1 teams (and don't forget Mechanicville, ranked No. 3 in Class C).
Nisky moved up to No. 6, Troy to No. 10 in Class AA.
Lansingburgh was also on the move, sliding up to the fifth spot in Class A.
Spa Catholic and Lake George also enter for the first time in Class B and Class C, respectively.
