Rensselaer County's Class A teams fall; new girls polls

Lansingburgh's Haneef Scott drives hard to the rim between Mohonasen's Jordan Macejka (l) and Robert Tedesco (r) in Sunday's Class A quarterfinal at Hudson Valley Community College. Scott scored 17 points, but the No. 4 seed Knights' season ended after a 69-56 victory by No. 5 Mohonasen. (All photos by Tom Killips - The Record).

Jesse Milligan, another Lansingburgh senior, rises to the rim between Mohonasen's Jordan Macejka (r) and Anthony Robustiano (l). Milligan, who was cut from the Modified team in Lansingburgh as a seventh grader, helped the Knights win their first Colonial Council title since 1980 during the regular season.
Xavier Murray (center) looks to move the ball as Mohonasen's Jordan Macejka defends in Sunday's game. Murray, a senior transfer from Troy High, added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Knights.
Lansingburgh head coach Guy DiBacco embraces Haneef Scott late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. Scott, a three-year starter at Lansingburgh, scored nearly 900 points in his career. He spent two seasons as the second or third option behind players like Connor Gallo and Matt Harte, Knights alums who play college sports these days.

"(Scott) has this charismatic smile about him," DiBacco said. "He’s the fun guy in prac¬tice, which is frustrating, but he never quits.
"It’s been so much fun watching him grow and devel¬op as a guard," continued DiBacco. "But I told him he’s not done yet. When he gets recruited, he has to carry the ‘Burgh name."

The Knights have found themselves on the losing end in the Class A quarterfinals in four of the six seasons DiBacco has been at the helm in North Troy. He's hoping, however, that the caliber of student-athletes he had will start a new basketball legacy in Lansingburgh.

"It’s tough going out against a solid Suburban Council team," DiBacco said. "But I’m very proud of my guys. We won the Colonial Council title for the first time since 1980 and we won more games than the year before.
"We’re hoping to keep knocking on the door and eventually we will get through," he continued. "Someone will have to let us in."
