LATHAM -- Football fans, players and coaches have been waiting for 'that year' at Shaker High School for quite some time.

Shaker has not qualified for a Section II postseason game since 2005 and the Blue Bison last won an area title the year man first walked on the moon - 1969.



The Blue Bison know they still have a lot of work to do, but with a new excitement generated by first-year head coach Greg Sheeler, maybe, just maybe, 2010 will be 'the year' in Latham.

"With any change, there is going to be a new optimism," said senior center and linebacker Bryan Egan.

"We interacted a lot more," said senior tight end and defensive end Chris Sherwin. "We called each other, gave our cell phone numbers, texted each other and got together for workouts and lifting."

"There has been a winning attitude around the whole school and everyone wants to be a part of it," said senior quarterback Ben Capeless. "It started in offseason, people been lifting together."

The Bison return a solid number of skill players and they've converted former fullback Derek Gardella into an offensive guard, which should make Shaker beefier up front.

"The eye in the sky doesn't lie," has been a refrain at Shaker practices this season. Head coach Greg Sheeler has taken a page from major college and professional programs and video records as much of the morning session of practice he could during two-a-days. During lunch, the players would break their film and get back out in the afternoon and apply their classroom work on the field.

COLONIE -- The South Colonie Garnet Raiders are hoping 2010 is going to be a season on the Brink.

Senior running back and linebacker Davion Brink has put in the extra effort in the offseason, knowing he's going to be one of the keys to Colonie's success in 2010.

"It's confidence," Brink said. "I feel like last year we definitely waited for things to happen. This year, we’re going to make them happen. There is no second thought, no hesitation. We’re going to make it happen, no question about it."

Colonie has a handful of returning starters, but they're still going to be a young and inexperienced team in 2010. That has changed the Raiders' practice approach during training camp, as they started from square one.

"We try to do more basics as opposed to the details," head coach Mike Ambrosio said. "Knowing the basics and the fundamentals, you can start building on that foundation. These kids have to spend more time with the foundation, the base stuff, before they start adding wrinkles."

STILLWATER — Tamarac High School’s boys golf team snapped Stillwater’s 41-match winning streak in the 2010 Wasaren League season opener at Saratoga Lake Golf Course by a score of 3-2.
Stillwater’s Connor Jones and John Hoin were medalists with rounds of 44, but Tamarac’s Dan O'Brien and Ben Gardenier (rounds of 46) and Anthony Giamei (47) paved the way for the Bengals’ team victory.

(Blogger's note: Record reporter Andrew Santillo covered Albany High for the Kickoff 2010 section. I will post photos and a few brief notes for the Falcons, but since I was not on campus, I do not have video).

ALBANY -- Once again, the Albany High School football team has a new coach. John McClement replaced Pete Porcelli this past offseason, becoming the school's fourth football coach in the last four years.

After spending last year as the defensive coordinator, McClement has taken over the program with an uphill battle ahead.

The Falcons have won just one game over the past three seasons and haven’t posted a single victory in the last two years.

"That’s the definition of an uphill battle," McClement told The Record's Andrew Santillo. "We’re really trying to instill in them, you’re having successes, but the win is how it’s measured at the varsity level and that’s what they’re working towards."

Albany’s three keys to the season
1, Dealing with adversity. This year’s Albany team will deal with adversity at some point during the season. It’s how the team deals with those things that will prove how good or bad this team will be.
2, Coaching transitions. It’s not just McClement who is in a new position. Albany has several new coaches, some that used to play for the team, when the team was strong, back in the mid 90s. The players are confident that these coaches can turn things around.
3, Offense change. The Falcons are going from a predominately running offense under Coach Pete Porcelli to a more balanced system. Under new Offensive Coordinator Jim Demidio, it looks like Albany will try their hand at going through the air with senior quarterback Michael Blair.

ALBANY — The 2010 high school football season begins this week and a pair of big-time rivalry games dominated the discussion at Sunday’s Media Day festivities at the University at Albany.

Thursday night, South Colonie travels across town to take on Shaker in the annual battle for the Town of Colonie Cup. Friday, La Salle Institute plays host to Troy High School in a resumption of The Record’s Collar City Cup series, which hasn’t been played since 2007.

Both games have been and always will be a once-in-a-lifetime highlight for the players.

“Every day after practice, it’s Bison, Bison, Bison,” said Colonie senior running back and linebacker Davion Brink. “It’s on everyone’s minds and it’s all I’m worried about right now.”

Colonie head coach Mike Ambrosio, however, had two issues with playing the game so early in the season. First, school does not start until next week, so excitement for this game will not be brewing in the hallways.

“For game one, I don’t think the towns and the schools will be excited because no one is in the building,”
Ambrosio said. “It’s kind of tough to get excited if no one is around. I’m sure Troy and La Salle are in the same boat. How do you have a rivalry game in week one?”

Secondly, moving the Colonie-Shaker game ahead a day for a television slot will cause certain players to be ineligible, according to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s rule that a player must participate in 15 practices prior to competing in the team’s first game.

 “The fact that they moved the game up to Thursday night, if a kid missed one practice, they can’t play in the game,” Ambrosio said. “I have a couple of seniors, the kids got sick and couldn’t make a practice. And their senior year, they can’t play in the rivalry game. That’s wrong.

“I totally disagree with moving it up and playing a rivalry game that early, but it’s not my decision,” Ambrosio continued. “I play where they tell me to go.”

Ambrosio knows the Colonie-Shaker rivalry well. He took a leave of absence at Colonie during the 2008 season to watch his son, Mark, play his senior season at Shaker.

The fact that they will not be in school doesn’t seem to damper the excitement that’s building for the Troy-La Salle game, at least on the internet.

“It is fun to be with a lot of your friends talking about the game and stuff, but on Facebook, we have a lot of stuff on that,” said Troy High senior running back Jordan Canzeri. “We sent a couple of invites and we have a good amount of people that are saying they’re going to attend the game, so it’s not a real big issue.”

Quarterback questions open and answered
With the first game of the season to be played later this week, both Cohoes and Watervliet still have question marks at the quarterback positions.

Cohoes head coach James Ducharme said he plans to use junior Danny DeChiaro and senior Darnell Rafalko interchangeably at quarterback throughout the season, as each has their own strengths and weakness under center.

Watervliet head coach Erick Bernard said that Brandon Legault and Sean Daley are still entrenched in a battle for the No. 1 quarterback job. The Cannoneers would like to use one of those players exclusively on offense and the backup quarterback exclusively on defense during games.

Lansingburgh head coach Al McNall announced that the team has full faith in junior Carlos Grillo, who has made a great impression on his coaching staff in about one and a half months of experience at the position in practices and camps.

“Carlos is our guy,” McNall said. “He’s progressing. He’s come a long way in a month and a half. He showed real well in the 7-on-7 at Cohoes and he made some throws that he has to be able to make.”

According to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake head coach Matt Shell, the Spartans have converted senior Keaton Flint into their starting quarterback. Flint was a fourth team All-State wide receiver in Class A last season, leading the Spartans to the New York State championship game for the second consecutive year.

Burnt Hills plays at Lansingburgh this Friday at 7 p.m. in a non-division Class A game.

ALBANY --The Albany Academy football team got off to a great start in 2009, winning its first four games in a row.

And then the wheels fell off.

The Cadets lost their final four games and finished 4-4. That memory, however, has stuck with the players as they prepare for 2010.


"One of the big lessons is definitely don’t let up," said junior quarterback Hunter McCarthy. "Last year we played Lansingburgh and it was our first loss. I think after that we kind of had a hangover. We played a quick game against Cohoes after that (a Thursday game following a Saturday game) and it was kind of hard to rebound after two tough losses in a row. We kind of got on a streak and it was tough."

"We have to play two sports," said senior tight end and linebacker Mike Berkowitz. "But a lot of people want to play sports. It’s not like you’re pressured into it."

One of the reasons for Albany Academy's success over the years is that the schools requires its students to play on at least two of the athletic teams it offers. Consequently, many of the players are multi-talented athletes that are already in great shape when practice starts up in August.

"They’re constantly on the go, so having a bunch of wrestlers, hoopers, baseball players, they’re always active and they’re staying busy," said head coach Tony Fruscio.

The Cadets have a ton of veterans back for the 2010 campaign, something which has given early practices a distinctly positive feel.

"They’re older, stronger, faster, and more physically developed," Fruscio said. "What I see now is that those guys are leaders and they've had success. They have made the climate of the team such a positive climate. The kids really look up to them, they respect them and that's the key to our season. Finally we’ve got guys that have been around for two-to-three years as true leaders of the team and that’s what really exciting and that shows in practice."

1, Conditioning. "It’s all about staying healthy and being in outstanding shape so we can play four quarters," head coach Tony Fruscio said.
2, Finding an offensive balance between pass and run and sharing the ball between playmakers.
3, Having a mindset defensively. "We didn’t have a mindset last year that we were going to come out and stop people and that our defense was going to make a difference in the game," Fruscio said. "Our defense has to be the reason we’re winning football games. We can’t rely only on our offense to put up the points."

SCHAGHTICOKE -- The first wave of players through the Hoosic Valley High School football program graduated in June, meaning a new era begins this season for the Indians.

"That group of kids that graduated last year I had coached for four years," said Hoosic Valley head coach Jay Garvey. "To see them at practice was kind of strange, but it does feel like a completely new group. One or two (of the old players) will stop by and its nice to see them, but I wish they were still playing for us."

Hoosic Valley enters its fifth season on the varsity level this fall and some of the players that had played all four years for the Indians are gone, opening a door for junior Anthony Brundidge, who will assume the starting quarterback role in 2010.

Hoosic Valley has four starters returning from a team that went 2-7 a season ago, meaning the team also has some major holes to fill.

"We have some big guys and some good athletes," Garvey said. "Really, how successful we are early on in the season depends on how quickly we get up to speed and pick up what we need to pick up."

Still, the Indians are hopeful for 2010, mainly because Korey LePage served as the team's ringleader in the offseason, getting new guys into the weight room in hopes that they stuck with the team when practices started in August.

"There are a lot of new kids," said junior Korey LePage. "I kind of miss all the old kids helping out. They still come back. They’ll still be here."

MECHANICVILLE -- Mechanicville High School's football team had a pretty good year in 2009, finishing the season with a 6-3 record. But in the tough Class C North Division, even a 5-2 regular season record wasn't good enough to qualify for the playoffs.

The Red Raiders will be right in the thick of things again in 2010.

CLIFTON PARK -- 2009 was a historic season for Shenendehowa High School head coach Brent Steuerwald, who won his 300th game and became the only coach in Section II history to accomplish that feat.

The Shen players are hoping that 2010 is an historic one for them.


One of the Plainsmen's biggest threats is senior running back Bronson Greene, who ran for 1,848 yards and 18 touchdowns a season ago despite not winning the starting job until Week Three. (Starter Suhayb Banks was injured in Shen's Week One game at Shaker).
