Rain altered Saturday's schedule in the Connie Mack World Series Qualifier, but the South Colonie Raiders kept their hopes alive by defeating College Select, 6-3. The Raiders, however, failed to qualify for the double elimination portion of the tournament.

Third base coaches have a language of their own when it comes to relaying signs to batters and baserunners, tapping their faces, chest, arms and legs in complicated patterns.

Sometimes, Ed Kelly, head coach of the South Colonie Raiders Connie Mack team, likes to keep it simple. He sticks out his meaty index fingers, points to the corners of his mouth and gives a big goofy grin.

Smile.

That message worked for Justin Harris, who on the first pitch after seeing the sign, smacked an RBI double down the left field line in the fifth inning of Saturday’s Connie Mack World Series qualifier game against College Select, breaking a tie and putting the Raiders ahead for good.

"I had a talk with him. He was out in front of the pitches early on," Kelly said. "I had to settle him down. I said you’re alright. Settle down. Smile. Let the game come to you. Don’t try to press so much."

Colonie won the game, 6-3, at South Colonie High School, but it wasn’t enough for the Raiders to advance to the double elimination portion of the tournament. Team N.Y. Scout won Pool D, leaving the South Troy Dodgers, a wildcard selection from Pool B as the lone local team remaining. Today, the Dodgers play host to the Florida Legends, three-time defending champions of the tournament, at 10 a.m. at Geer Field.

South Colonie starter Anthony LaValley was lifted after three innings having allowed just one earned run on seven hits. Jake Mullen provided three innings of relief, earning the win. Jaime June used 15 pitches in the seventh inning to pick up the save.

"I thought that, with having so many games in a couple of days, you have to go to anyone that can really throw," Mullen said. "I thought I might get in today, I got the call and I try to keep it as close as I can. If we’re in the lead, I just want to maintain it."

Second baseman Chris Kalica led the way with two hits for the Raiders, adding a double and a stolen base. He and Chris Kearney pitched South Colonie to victories over the Jack Cust Diamondjacks and the Long Island Tigers on Friday.

Although the game featured six errors – three on both sides – Harris made the play of the day behind the plate in the bottom of the fifth.

With the bases loaded and one out, Mullen threw a pitch that bounced in the dirt in front of Harris. He reached out with his bare hand to grab it, but it skipped to the backstop, where it ricocheted off a post right back to Harris. He looked to flip the ball to Mullen, but the pitcher was not close enough to the plate, so Harris dove and tagged Matt Mastroianni out in the nick of time.

"To catch the ball and have the wherewithal to know that the pitcher was late in covering and take a dive at the plate, it’s just a great, heads-up play in my opinion," Kelly said. "I don’t know how many catchers would make that play."

The Upper New York State Connie Mack Tournament begins Wednesday in Schenectady’s Central Park and the Raiders are hoping their experience in the World Series Qualifier has prepared them for the Empire State’s finest.

"We want to kind of use this as a template to compare yourself with where you are with all the big teams," Mullen said. "And kind of use these games as momentum for the states and do very well there."

Nolan Gaige, a lefthanded throwing and hitting outfielder and pitcher for South Troy, collected three of the Dodgers’ five hits in the victory over Hudson Valley. His home run was a towering shot that kept going and going and going and finally cleared the deep centerfield fence straight out from home plate.

"I knew I hit it pretty well and I knew it had a chance and I knew it was going to get over his head," he said. "Fortunately it went out and we scored three runs."

Wendell Wright throws a pitch during Friday's nightcap. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and pitched his fourth straight complete game for the Dodgers.

Wright, who has thrown four straight complete games as the Dodgers’ No. 2 starter behind Dave Roseboom, buckled in the fifth inning, allowing three straight singles to open the frame. After recording a strikeout, he walked in two runs before getting out of the jam otherwise unscathed.

Those runs certainly mattered for the Dodgers, who could be fighting for a wildcard spot. South Troy brought the infield in with nobody out in the fifth because the two second place teams that have allowed the fewest runs will join the pool winners in the double elimination round.

"It was huge because I didn’t want to give up too many runs, but I did give up two runs," Wright said.

The Dodgers lost a heartbreaker in the morning, falling to the Cincy Flames 2-1. Steve Anderson hit a solo home run to give the Dodgers a one-run lead in the sixth inning, but Cincy took advantage of an error to take the lead and win after that.

Dan Priore (pictured above), like Wright (pictured below), a rising senior at Utica-Proctor, has quietly been pacing the Dodgers’ offense from the No. 9 hole. He doubled and drew two walks in Friday’s game against Hudson Valley, scoring two runs. He also hit a two-run triple in South Troy’s victory over the Devilcats Thursday evening.

"Our JV coach recommend us to one of the (South Troy) coaches," Priore said. "After one or two practices, they asked us if we wanted to play. It’s a good opportunity to play wood bat and get a lot of looks for colleges. It’s great."


I asked Nolan Gaige (pictued above) if there was anything particular the Capital Region locals did to make their out-of-town teammates feel at home.

"You just try to make them feel comfortable," he said. "There's not much hazing to do, not like college."

VALLEY FALLS - Brendan Singletary tripled, singled and drove in four runs for the Lansingburgh Royals’ Sandy Koufax team in an 11-3 mercy rule victory over New Hartford in the Upper New York State Tournament played at Chapko-Lewis Stadium.
Logan Brogue and Jake Connally added a double, a single and two RBI apiece for the Royals (16-12).
Jeff Tomiano doubled, singled and drove in two runs for New Hartford (12-4).

TROY - Twenty baseball teams – including squads from up and down the eastern half of the United States - have entered, but only one will leave the Collar City with an automatic berth to the Connie Mack World Series.

Beginning at 9 a.m. today, the South Troy Dodgers organization will yet again play host to an American Amateur Baseball Congress World Series qualifier, with four fields around the Capital Region serving as pool play sites. After three days of pool play, a double elimination tournament begins with the remaining six teams. The last team standing clinches an automatic berth into the Connie Mack World Series, to be played August 6-13 in Farmington, N.M.

The South Troy Dodgers’ 18-and-under team hosts a pool at Geer Field in Troy, while the Dodgers’ 17-and-under unit will entertain four other teams on The College of Saint Rose’s Bob Bellizzi Field in Albany. The South Colonie Raiders will play at South Colonie High School and the Clifton Park Yankees will compete at Clifton Common.

Some of the area’s best young baseball players will battle for the local teams, but this tournament routinely draws future professional-quality talent as well.

The Florida Legends, three-time defending champions, had 14 players selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Some of those players have signed contracts and are currently playing minor league baseball, although shortstop Manny Machado, picked third overall by the Baltimore Orioles, is still unsigned and has committed to Florida International University.

Two years ago, Ryan Westmoreland, a fifth round draft pick by the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 draft, stunned the South Troy Dodgers 17-and-under squad as a member of the Bayside Yankees, hitting three home runs in a game at Bleecker Stadium in Albany. He later became a New York-Penn League All-Star for the Red Sox affiliate in Lowell and played short season Class A games at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, a hop, skip and a jump from Geer Field.

Other contenders this year include the Cincy Flames, from Cincinnati, Ohio, which had three current players selected in the 2010 draft.

The Frozen Ropes Titans, from McKinney, Texas, had the longest trip to Troy. According to team coaches at Wednesday’s registration meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn, after playing a doubleheader Tuesday, the team headed to the Dallas airport at 4:30 a.m. and endured layovers in New Orleans and Tampa before arriving in Albany.

The rest of the field is filled out with teams from the New York City metro area, New Jersey, Connecticut and Michigan.

Dave Roseboom, a graduate of La Salle Institute, was the only local player in the tournament who was selected in the Major League Draft. South Troy’s hard-throwing lefthander was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 1,433 pick in the 47th round.

South Colonie features a young team led by pitchers Chris Kalica and Chris Kearney – rising seniors both at Colonie High School. An experienced team in years past, Ed Kelly’s squad is youthful, but hopeful they can compete.

This week’s tournament is one of two open qualifiers in the nation, as the western version was played in Phoenix in late June. The Dodgers will also host the North Atlantic Regional in Troy July 22 to 25. The winner of that tournament, which is reserved for area champions from the northeast, also secures a berth in the Connie Mack World Series.

Admission is free to all games played this week.

A 20-team Connie Mack World Series qualifying tournament will be played in the Capital Region beginning Thursday. Teams from all around the nation will be vying for a single berth to the Connie Mack World Series, to be played in Farmington, N.M. later this summer.

It is a wood-bat only tournament that features four separate five-team pools. Pool winners and two wild cards will advanced to a double elimination round, set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.

(From past experience, rain and extra innings always seem to wreak havoc on the schedule, so this is just the initial plan.)

"After I threw against South Colonie the first time, I said, ‘Alright coach, 109 pitches today, I’ll see you Sunday," said Tedesco. "I just went home and iced and did everything I could to get back to Sunday because Sunday was the championship. Sunday came along and (coach Doug LaValley) said, ‘here’s the ball. Go to work’."

Tedesco ran out of gas, finally, in the sixth, walking the first three batters he faced. John Kellogg came in and put out the fire, striking out four in the final two innings to slam the door on the Raiders, who were the defending champions of the New York State tournament.

"I was just trying to throw strikes," said Kellogg, a Bethlehem High graduate. "I only threw one or two curveballs the whole two innings. I was just pounding them with fastballs. I was trying to get outs and make them hit it and they just turned into strikeouts and we were able to work out of it."

Sean Geisel drove in three runs and has done a great job out of the No. 5 hole in the lineup - a big RBI spot.

"I just try to make contact," Geisel said. "I can’t drive in runs if the guys in front of me aren’t getting on base. It’s really up to them to get on base, which they’ve been doing a lot and helping me out."

Many people deserve credit for making the five-day event a success at the Boght Area Baseball Complex.
The North Colonie Padres hosted the tournament and their grounds crew and concessions stand volunteers were tireless in their dedication to making sure the fields were playable and the fans were fed.
Joe Henkel did an admirable job as the public address announcer.
And let's not forget all the players and coaches who sacrificed five full days of their time trying to earn a berth in the North Atlantic Regionals.
