Local roundup, Sept. 7, 2010

The Record


CLIFTON PARK — Austin Britt scored an unassisted goal in the second overtime of a Suburban Council boys soccer game, lifting Shaker to a 2-1 victory over Shenendehowa.
Tim Preston scored a penalty kick goal for the Blue Bison in the second half to force overtime.
Shen’s Brendan Dempsey scored a first half goal on an assist from Adam Barlow.
Colonie 3, Columbia 0: Massimo Smiroldo, Yaw Agyei and Tommy Osipitan scored goals for Colonie in its Suburban Council regular season opener, a victory over Columbia.
Todd Lawson made two saves in net for the Garnet Raiders.
Alex Morrision made nine saves for the Blue Devils.
Loudonville Christian 2, Hoosic Valley 1: Eric Hudspath scored two goals and Jared Burns made 11 saves in net to pace Loudonville Christian to a non-league victory over the Indians.
Alex Roullier scored for Hoosic Valley in the 75th minute.
Girls Soccer
Bethlehem 5, Averill Park 0: Kristina Maksuti scored one goal and assisted on two others as the Eagles raced to a Suburban Council victory over the Lady Warriors.
Laura Daigle made 14 saves in net for Averill Park.
Field Hockey
Guilderland 1, Burnt Hills 0: Kelsey Michele scored at 17:30 of the second half to lift the Lady Dutch to a Suburban Council victory.
Melissa DiMarzio made three saves for Guilderland (1-1), while Aubrey Kay made three stops in net for Burnt Hills (0-2).
Girls Tennis
Maple Hill 7, Cairo-Durham 0: The Wildcats (1-0) swept the Indians (0-1) in the Patroon Conference opener for both teams.
Albany Academy 6, Ravena 1: Natalie Cheung defeated Ravena’s Lauren Cumm 6-3, 6-3 to pace the Bears in a Colonial Council clash.
Girls Volleyball
Catholic Central 3, Bishop Gibbons 0: Gena Russo smashed 11 kills and added 16 assists and six digs for the Crusaders (1-0, 1-0) in a Big 10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights (0-1, 0-1) by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19.
Hannah Kutny added nine kills.
Alexanda Gosh made 10 assists and 11 digs for Gibbons.
Shenendehowa 3, Shaker 0: The Lady Plainsmen won a Suburban Council match by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-16.
Cambridge 3, Corinth 1: Cambridge won a non-league match against Corinth by scores of 25-23, 28-26, 19-25, 25-13.
Paige Fortier led the way with six kills and five aces, while Patrice Herrington added six kills, three aces and 10 assists for the Indians.
Boys Volleyball
Burnt Hills 3, Saratoga Springs 0: The Spartans (2-0) defeated the Blue Streaks (0-2) by scores of 25-11, 25-7 and 25-9 in Suburban Council action.
Jimmy Keyes smashed five kills and added three aces for Burnt Hills, while Eric Winnie paced Saratoga with three kills and three blocks.
Shenendehowa 3, Guilderland 0: The Plainsmen topped the Dutchmen in Suburban Council action Tuesday by scores of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-12.
Colonie 3, Columbia 0: The Garnet Raiders defeated the Blue Devils in a Suburban Council matchup by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-16.
Boys Golf
Hoosick Falls 3, Greenwich 2: Kealan Hitt fired a personal best 42 to pace the Panthers (4-1) to victory in a Wasaren League match at Hoosick Falls Country Club.
Greg Scott led the Witches with a 36.
Mechanicville 179, Ravena 191: Mechanicville’s John Young fired a round of 36 to lead all golfers and pace the Red Raiders to a Colonial Council victory at Mechanicville Country Club.
Alex Russ guided the Indians with a round of 40.
Bethlehem 245, Averill Park 293: Averill Park’s Jimmy Sullivan fired a low round of 38, but Bethlehem earned the Suburban Council team victory at Burden Lake Country Club.
The Warriors dropped to 1-2 in league play.
Colleges
Men’s Golf
Saint Rose in sixth-place tie in Assumption College Golf Invitational: Saint Rose junior Matt Horton (Hoosic Valley High School) finished right where he left off a year ago by carding an even-par 72 to take fifth overall. The Golden Knights finished five strokes back in a three-way tie for sixth place with a team score of 310, as a mere eight strokes separated seven teams.
Women’s Tennis
Castleton 8, Sage 1: Sage’s newcomer, sophomore co-captain Mackenzie Riley was the squad’s lone victor as she tallied a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles over Michelle Podnecky in her first match as a Gator.
Women’s Volleyball
St. Rose 3, Nyack 1: Freshman Christina Strezenec totaled 17 digs and six aces and Sarah Kahrs contributed 15 digs and 12 kills as the Golden Knights (1-3) won a non-conference match in their home opener.
Vassar 3, Sage 0: The Brewers won a non-conference match by scores of 25-8, 25-13 and 25-19. Vassar improves to 3-2. Sage fell to 0-3.
Senior middle hitter Nicole Corbett (Columbia High) contributed eight kills and one block.
