14 records fall at the 13th annual Cohoes Relays

Troy High freshman Courtney Avery clears 5-feet, 2-inches in the high jump at the Cohoes Invitational Relays Saturday on Alumni Track and Field at Cohoes High School. Avery teamed with Lativia Perkins, who added a jump of 4-feet-6-inches, to claim a first place finish in the event. (All photos by Tom Killips - The Record).

It was a beautiful day for a track meet Saturday in the Spindle City and some of Section II's top performers responded, shattering 14 meet records at the 13th annual Cohoes Invitational Relays.

Lansingburgh's C.J. Sousis set the tone, running a 9:49.3 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the first event of the day. He broke the meet record and the Lansingburgh school record in the process.

Lansingburgh’s sprint medley relay team (pictured above making the final handoff) - Aaron Fuller, Darryl Farrell, Terrance Kemp and Alney Tobias - set a meet record with a 3:36.2.

Albany High’s boys sprinters broke four records, top¬ping the previous marks in the 4x100, 4x200 and the 4x400 relays and the 3x110 hurdles.

Averill Park’s Rudy Winkler, Ryan Singleton and Zak Luzinas broke the shot put record with a combined toss of 154 feet, 7¼ inches. That trio also teamed up to post a first place finish in the discus relay.

Shenendehowa's Grant McLeod leaps over the high jump bar set at 6-feet, 4-inches during Saturday's Cohoes Relays. He didn't clear here, but his leap of 6-feet, 3-inches was the best of the day.

One of the best aspects of the Cohoes Relays, of course, is its relay-based scoring system. Teams aren't out to earn a clean sweep of trophies and medals (t-shirts and ribbons are handed out, though), instead enjoying a festival-like atmosphere in the infield and the berm on the east edge of the field.

"The kids, they really like the team events," said Jack Burger, who is the Troy High boys outdoor co-coach along with Bob Burns. "They like the relay stuff because it’s like a team sport where they’re relying on each other. That’s what made it fun, I think."

Troy High's Jenette Williams bounds down the triple jump track Saturday afternoon. The Flying Horses did not place in the triple jump, but did finished seventh overall in the long jump.

Among the girls’ record-breakers were the shot put, discus and pole vault relay teams from Shenendehowa.
