'Vliet girls hope to not get stung by Yellowjackets
This is the first in a series of five high school basketball previews this week in The Record on the local high school basketball teams that have advanced to the Final Four.
Click on the video above to see interviews with Watervliet senior center Julie Keegan and head coach Gordie Johnson.
One thing that stuck out Monday afternoon was the whiteboard in the Watervliet team room, which was still packed with notes for Watervliet's regional final game against Ogdensburg. Just like what George Mardigan did for the Watervliet boys for 30 years, Johnson makes a detailed scouting report for every game, telling each player what to expect from their counterpart on the other team.
While the postseason games may hold more importance, that doesn't change how Johnson prepares his team.
"There is nothing more for sectionals or state championships. Nothing more," Johnson said. "We prepare for every opponent the same exact way and that’s the way we’ve been approaching this for 11 years now. We’ve been fairly successful so we’re going to keep doing it that way. It works out pretty well for us."
