Troy extends shutout streak; 'Burgh tops Academy in back-and-forth battle

Troy's Jordan Canzeri plows through the Averill Park defenders during Saturday's 54-0 victory over the Warriors at Troy High School. Canzeri rushed for 159 yards on 12 carries and two scores as the Flying Horses kept their 19 quarter shutout streak intact. (Photo by Mike McMahon - The Record).

"Again, the defense makes great stops and we get the ball and move it down the field," Troy coach Jack Burger told The Record's Chris Fitz Gerald. "It's a really a team effort and that the thing I'm most proud of with this group of guys. All these guys have had chances to make contributions - they come out and work hard every day."

The Flying Horses (3-0, 5-0) travel to Bleecker Stadium Friday to take on Bishop Maginn, the only team to defeat Troy in the regular season a year ago. This season's Golden Griffins squad, minus Bunduka Kargbo, now at the University at Buffalo, is a much different group.

Over in Albany, Lansingburgh's Tyrone Nichols (5) ran wild against the Albany Academy defense in what was a wacky, fun Reinfurt Division football game. Nichols piled up 250 rushing yards and led the Knights to a 42-32 come-from-behind victory. (Photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

Albany Academy's Connor Ferris looks for running room during Saturday's game. Ferris ran for 115 yards and also caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Hunter McCarthy.

Lansingburgh head coach Al McNall implored his team to dominate the second half, which the Knights did, for the most part. Lansingburgh forced Albany Academy to run a pair of three-and-out drives for a grand total of -12 yards in the fourth quarter, while the Knights scored a pair of touchdowns themselves to squeak out the victory.

Albany Academy's Zay Richardson, who 212 yards and five touchdowns on 10 carries against Johnstown a week ago, was certainly targeted by the Lansingburgh defense. Richardson finished with 52 yards on the ground, but did catch a 41-yard touchdown pass and return a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Lansingburgh's Jared Grimes reacts after catching a touchdown pass in the second quarter from T.J. McLaughlin. It was Grimes only catch of the day, but McLaughlin finished with 119 passing yards and a pair of touchdown strikes.

The Knights get a week to prepare for their crossover game against West Division opponent Broadalbin-Perth, while Albany Academy has a short week before their special Thursday contest at Cohoes. That Cohoes-Academy game on Alumni Field will kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 and will go a long way in determining who earns the second home playoff berth behind Lansingburgh in the Reinfurt Division.
