Week two: a look ahead
La Salle seniors Nolan Flike (left) and Lou DiNovo (right) lift the Sabre over their heads at practice on Thursday. Three-year starters, the pair has recently helped the Cadets keep control of the Sabre ever since the rivalry with CBA resumed in 2001. (photo by Tom Killips - The Record).
"It’s a night that epitomizes small town high school football," La Salle head coach Al Rapp said. "Friday night lights! The whole thing about getting together and with people’s pride riding on this game, it may be carried to a point where it gets over-emphasized in some areas, but you know, the bottom line is, it’s important because it means something to both sides. We’re trying to carry on tradition and do the right thing."
The rivalry dates back to 1932, and CBA holds the all-time advantage, 32-20-6. Look for more on the game in Friday's edition of The Record.
"Class, honor and integrity are all important things and I would like to think those are the reasons we have been so successful, because we try to emphasize those things," Rapp said. "I tell them to take pride in yourself, your country, your family and your school and we get good support here. I tell the guys, 'like it or not, the CBA game is a big game and in those stands, you’ll have somebody that wore your number when he was in high school. He’s watching your number."

Lansingburgh (0-0, 1-0) at Schalmont (0-0, 0-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
About Lansingburgh: The Knights blanked the defending Section II champions from Hudson Falls, 35-0, in the opener last week. Senior quarterback T.J. McLaughlin threw the ball 10 times in that game, completing five passes for 57 yards and one touchdown. The Knights went 11-2 in 2005, their last season in Class B. Lansingburgh lost a regular season game to Ravena and lost to Rye in the New York State Class B semifinals.
About Schalmont: Senior Vince Gallo, a third team All-State player in 2008, has moved to quarterback, but he still runs the ball plenty. Gallo gained 182 rushing yards last week against Albany Academy, but the Sabres still lost, 35-18. Schalmont qualified for the postseason for the first time in five years last season, but dropped a quarterfinal game to an underdog Hudson squad with a 2-5 record.
Notable: Lansingburgh won the last meeting between the teams, a Week 1 contest in the 2005 season, 65-0.
Schenectady (0-0, 1-0) at Shen (0-0, 1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
About Schenectady: The Patriots defeated Albany by 27 points in Week 1, scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter. None of Schenectady’s rushers collected more than 59 yards on the ground and quarterback Tim Cox accounted for 68 passing yards. Two of Schenectady’s touchdowns came on fumble returns in the Albany game.
About Shenendehowa: Suhayb Banks rushed for 166 yards and touchdowns runs of 50 and 58 yards, respectively, in an opening week victory over Shaker. Bronson Greene (62 yards) and Cody Case-Therrien (52 yards) added to the Plainsmen rushing attack.
Notable: Tonight’s game is the first on Shenendehowa’s brand-new FieldTurf surface. Festivities, which include remarks and a dedication, begin at 6:30 p.m. Plainsmen head coach Brent Steuerwald is four wins away from No. 300. Schenectady won last year’s game between the two schools, a 36-7 Week 1 victory.
Schuylerville (0-1, 0-1) at Cambridge (1-0, 1-0), Saturday, 1 p.m.
About Schuylerville: The Black Horses filled up the stat sheets – quarterback Austin Bateman passed for 275 yards and rushed for 37 more – but dropped an opening week Class C North Division game to Hoosick Falls. In another North Division game tomorrow, the Black Horses could fall two games behind the leaders with another loss. The Black Horses carried a 9-0 record into the 2008 Section II Class C Super Bowl.
About Cambridge: The Indians spoiled Stillwater’s new field debut in Week 1, cruising to a 43-0 victory. Quarterback Kyle Parmenter added 25 pounds in the offseason, looking to add to his power in the rushing game. He passed for 1,381 yards last year, Cambridge’s first losing season in 19 years. Senior running back Zach Carle, who pitched for the Lansingburgh Royals Connie Mack team this summer, also figures to get some action in the backfield.
Notable: Schuylerville handed the Indians a 49-23 defeat in Week 7 of the 2008 season. Cambridge, however, topped Schuylerville 21-20 in the 2007 Section II Class C Super Bowl. Cambridge also topped the Black Horses in a 2002 opening round Class C playoff game, 21-6.
Amsterdam (0-0, 0-1) at Troy (0-0, 1-0), Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
About Amsterdam: The Rugged Rams have qualified for the postseason 15 consecutive years, but with only one returning offensive starter, a playoff berth will be an uphill struggle for the team in 2009. Running back Mike Flowers romped for 119 yards in a opening week loss to Bishop Maginn. Amsterdam allowed 20 first half points, but could not mount a comeback after halftime, losing 20-17.
About Troy: The Flying Horses did not convert a single point after touchdown play in Week 1. Troy missed three PATs and were stuffed twice trying to run the ball in the end zone. Queensbury scored a first quarter touchdown, but the Flying Horses outscored them the rest of the way, 30-0.
Notable: Troy won last season’s Week 2 meeting with Amsterdam in the Rug City, 34-6. Amsterdam and Troy have never met in a postseason game.
