Tamarac names top 50; Academy rolls

Tamarac senior guard/forward Steve Hunt drives to the hole during Friday's game against Catskill. (All photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

The Bengals put on a very nice ceremony Friday night prior to their opening round game against Catskill in the Watervliet Tip-Off Tournament. Coach Eric Medved narrated a PowerPoint presentation that outlined the 50 years of basketball history in Brunswick and he announced the top 50 players in school history - 10 players from each decade of the team's existence.

Tamarac's three-year starting point guard Tyler Shaw dives for a loose ball during Friday's victory over Catskill.

All of the players honored in the pregame ceremony took home a small Bengal trophy and a piece of the old floor. Tamarac also renovated the gym completely, adding a new floor, bleachers and scoreboards.

"It was a good night because everyone from the last 50 years was here," Shaw said. "It was tremendous to be a part of it."
"To see all the smiles on everybody’s faces and to get all the decades together, it was a special night," said Rick Roden, Tamarac's Athletic Director and a member of the top 50 team. "I was honored to be part of it as an alumnus."

Tamarac senior guard Jamie McGrath defends Catskill's Omar Wilson during Friday's victory over the Cats at Tamarac High School.

The Bengals went on to win the Watervliet Tournament, defeating Canton 47-43 on George Mardigan Court on Saturday night.
Steve Hunt scored 22 points and was named Tournament MVP for scoring 37 points and grabbing 24 rebounds over the two days of games.

This year's Tamarac team is senior-laden (11 seniors and two juniors) and hopes are high around Clums Corners. The team has not won a Wasaren League title since 1976.

The thing that strikes me most about Tamarac is the team depth. Starting guard Phil Arnold did not score any points on Friday night, but his presence was still felt defensively. Kolby Kanellis scored 13 points off the bench and all the players on the roster have potential to put in a game-saving performance.

Tamarac kicks off its Wasaren League schedule against Cambridge on Friday, Dec. 12.

Albany Academy's Chris Pelcher stuffs a shot by Catholic Central's Kevin Wilkes in the championship game of the Crusader Roundball Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Well, it looks like the Cadets are going to be in good shape in Class AA. Albany Academy dismantled two of Troy's Big 10 teams by a combined score of 153-93 and claimed the CCHS tourney title.
Pelcher earned MVP honors by scoring 45 points and collecting 26 rebounds over the two-day event.

"I just have to credit all my teammates for giving me the ball," he said. "I couldn’t do it without them."

The Cadets, too, have depth. Two freshmen, Hunter McCarthy and Matt LaClair, both impressed in the final against CCHS on Saturday. They both saw extra time because starting guard Nolan Hart is still out because of an injury, but the extra bodies on the bench bode well for Academy.

The school is appealing to the state to be classified as an A school, but Section II has fit them into the AAs and that will stand for now.
The Cadets have a tough schedule because they do not belong to a league and will play some of the best teams from New York City during the year, including a thorough tour through Section II's best. But so far, so good.

"Since we don’t have a league, every game is a big game for us," head coach Brian Fruscio said.

Catholic Central's Denzel Paschal tries to move the ball during Saturday's championship game in the Crusader Roundball Classic against Albany Academy.

It was another tough game for the Crusaders, but Kevin Wilkes had a nice night for Catholic High. The junior scored 20 points - including four buckets from behind the three-point arc. He earned All-Tournament recognition.

La Salle's Mason Horne, Schuylerville's Austin Bateman and Albany Academy's Tyler Foster rounded out the All-Tournament team.

Our boys and girls basketball preview sections will run in The Record this week.

Thanksgiving Basketball Tournaments

If you aren't too stuffed with turkey by the time Friday afternoon rolls around, here are some local high school tournaments to check out.
Most tournaments conclude on Saturday with consolation and championship games, except for the Shenendehowa Tip-Off Tournament, which features three teams in three games in three days.
The Rensselaer tournament kicks off on Wednesday, and concludes on Friday night.
The Watervliet tournament features Catskill at Tamarac High School in an opening round game and the Bengals will announce the top 50 players in program history in a ceremony prior to the game. Three of the current players made the cut, but you'll have to head over on Friday night to find out who made it.

Don't forget that the girls are in action, too. The tournaments in Saratoga and Cohoes look especially appealing with the talent that will be on the floor there.

Hoop season almost upon us

High school basketball begins on Thanksgiving weekend, with what looks like a great tournament going on at Catholic Central. The Crusader Roundball Classic begins on Friday, November 28 with games between La Salle, Albany Academy, Schuylerville and host Catholic High. The first game begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with the next to immediately follow.
Consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday.

--
Who do you think will be the major players on the court this season, either on the girls or boys sides? Which teams have a shot to win their league titles?
--

On the boys side, Bishop Maginn should be again the favorite to win the Big 10, with Taran Buie and Bunduka Kargbo returning as the best backcourt in Section II. Teams such as CBA and Catholic Central lost significant talent and senior leadership, so beyond Maginn, the Big 10 is wide open.
Bishop Maginn junior Taran Buie (with ball) aims to again be one of the top scorers in the area this season. (Mike McMahon - The Record)

The Suburban Council has realigned into two divisions:

North Division: Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Niskayuna, Saratoga Springs, Shaker and Shenendehowa.
South Division: Averill Park, Bethlehem, Colonie, Columbia, Mohonasen and Guilderland.

Each team will play home-and-home in their division and play a single game against opponents in the opposite division for a 16-game regular season schedule. As far as I understand, the postseason Suburban Council tournament, which was played prior to the beginning of the Sectional tournament, has been scrapped.

On the boys side, Colonie should be dominant thanks to a frontcourt featuring Sean Peer and Herb Tedford. Jordan Stevens from Saratoga Springs may have something to say about that.

Tamarac is the front-runner in the Wasaren League, as all of their players except for Matt Dixon, the lone senior on last year's team, return. Cambridge (Shea Bromirksi) and Hoosic Valley (Pat Lanoue) lost their big-time shooters, so the rest of the league is up for grabs.

Now that Albany Academy has escaped the Colonial Council (they'll play a freelance Class AA schedule, but have some dates against old Colonial foes) any team can make a name for themselves. Nick Benoit at Cohoes and Chris Hughes at Watervliet are just two of the players to watch this season. And remember, Mechanicville made it all the way to the New York State championship game last season, so don't count out the Red Raiders.

--
For the girls, Averill Park's Katie Duma is back for her junior year and was a first-team all-state player as a sophomore.
Bethlehem's Meg Olsen should also factor in for the Eagles.

The Big 10 could likely come down to a battle between Schenectady and Shelia Dixon and Bishop Maginn and Mariah Stewart. Amsterdam, however, also figures to be in the mix.

In the Colonial Council, both Cohoes and Watervliet lost major players to graduation, so we will have to see who steps up to fill those shoes.
Lansingburgh's Erin Glikes earned Colonial Council MVP honors in softball but also figures to be a key player on the Lady Knights' basketball team this season.

And in the Wasaren, the Hoosic Valley team advanced far in the New York State tournament but will have to do it this year without Kayla Ryan, who was a big-time scorer for the Indians a season ago.

--
That's just a rough outline off the top of my head, but I hope it spurs some conversation.

Watervliet loses in overtime

The Watervliet Cannoneers football season came to an end with a 14-7 overtime loss to Saranac Lake in the New York State regionals on a murky Saturday afternoon in Plattsburgh.

The Cannoneers held the Red Storm scoreless in the first half and played strong defense throughout limiting Saranac Lake to 81 yards rushing.

In the end though the Cannoneers couldn't overcome a series of costly penalties committed near the red zone.

The Red Storm scored the eventual game winner on the first possession of overtime and then kept the Cannoneers from answering.

Dom Diaz scored Watervliet's only touchdown with a two-yard run in the second quarter. Diaz was named offensive player-of-the-game for the Cannoneers.

It was a memorable playoff run for Watervliet and its 19 seniors. In an underdog role they knocked off Chatham and Schuylerville in back-to-back weeks to earn the school's first Section II title since the 1997 season.

Read more about the game in Sunday's edition of The Record.

A look at the record book - revised

La Salle's Marquis Terrell (pictured above) has gained 1,727 yards this season, bringing his career total to 4,277 rushing yards, ranking him fifth all-time in Section II history.

Hudson Falls' Joe McMurry also jumped into the top five in his senior season, rushing for 2,186 yards through ten games, bringing his career total to 4,848, placing him fourth all-time in Section II history.

Both players will compete in New York State regional round games on Saturday, meaning they can add to their career totals.

The brand-new top ten career rushers in Section II history (as of 11/14/08):
1. Kareem Jones (Lansingburgh, 2000-03) 6,092 yds.
2. Kenny Youngs (Lansingburgh, 2003-07) 5,404 yds.
3. Leroy Collins (Hudson, 1992-94) 4,989 yds.
4. Joe McMurry (Hudson Falls 2006-08) 4,848 * active
5. Marquis Terrell (La Salle, 2006-08) 4,277 yds. * active
6. Sakima Grimes (Cambridge, 1992-95) 4,222 yds.
7. Justice Smith (Amsterdam, 1988-91) 4,124 yds.
8. Larry Starks (Watervliet, 1999-01) 4,114 yds.
9. Corey Brand (Glens Falls, 1991-93) 3,824
10. Chris Nappi (Niskayuna, 1997-00) 3,735

Both Terrell and McMurry have been adept at finding the endzone as well.
McMurry has scored 400 points in his career, which ranks him 6th all-time.
Terrell has scored 336 points, 13th all-time in Section II history.

--
Albany Academy receiver Jimmer Bennett finished his career with 199 receptions for 3,119 yards. He held Section II records in both categories before the 2008 season even began and is now 91 catches ahead of second place (Gloversville's Justin DeMagistris, 108) and 1,075 yards in front of the second-best yardage-gaining receiver in Section II history (Fort Edward's, Matt Thibodeau, 2,044).

Bennett holds second and third place for receiving yards in a single season (1,080 in '07 and 1,039 in '08).

He holds the record for receptions in a single season, catching 77 balls this year, edging out John Preston, who caught 76 passes at Rensselaer in 1980. (Preston was the varsity head coach at Colonie this season).

He holds the record for most catches in a single game, grabbing 15 passes against Ravena in week four this season, again edging out Preston, who had held the record with 14.

And don't think he's done yet at Academy. Bennett is also a fantastic point guard for the Cadets' basketball team.

Fonda-Fultonville's Kevin Hanson finished his career with 98 receptions, claiming sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list, edging out current Burnt Hills head coach Matt Shell, who caught 97 passes for Gloversville from 1986-87. Johnstown's Joe Ruggeri also caught 97 passes for the Sir Bills from 1988-89.
--

Speaking of Burnt Hills, Spartans quarterback Paul Layton is now the most prolific kicker in Section II history.

Burnt Hills' Paul Layton has kicked 161 points through the uprights in his career - 140 extra points and seven field goals.
He passed Ravena's Norris Ackert, who had kicked 158 points (134 XPs, 8 FGs) for the Indians from 1995-97.
Layton and the Spartans take on Indian River tonight in a NYS Class A quarterfinal match.

HS football polls released, 11/12

Dom Diaz, (5), sideways, is just one of the players that have led the Watervliet Cannoneers on a miracle run to the New York State regionals this Saturday against Saranac Lake in Plattsburgh.

Watervliet made the jump of the week in the New York State high school football polls - hopping from No. 17 to No. 7 with a victory over Schuylerville in the Section II Class C final.
They'll face No. 12 Saranac Lake in the regional round at Plattsburgh High School. Saturday's kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

La Salle jumped up to No. 16 with a victory over Schenectady in the AA Super Bowl and they play No. 7 New Rochelle at Dietz Stadium at 7:30 on Saturday evening.

Rensselaer moved up to No. 7 with a victory (blowout style) over Fort Edward in the Class D Super Bowl, and they'll play No. 4 Moriah. The Vikings have to play up oftentimes and own a victory over Class B No. 20 Beekmantown and a pair of wins over Class D No. 10 Ticonderoga.
Rensselaer and Moriah play on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hudson Falls High School.

It also looks like Troy, Bishop Maginn and Cohoes have earned spots in the final season rankings, which will be released after the Super Bowls.
