Empire State Games: Friday roundup


The Empire State Games is in full swing in the Buffalo area after a one-year hiatus.

Here is a selected roundup of how the Adirondack Region teams have fared so far. All text in red is a hyperlink you can click to be directed to specific results.

Scholastic Baseball
The Adirondack baseball team defeated New York City 10-0 in its first game, but lost its last two to the Western team (7-6) and the Central (13-2).
Colonie's Chris Kalica and Nicholas Valletta and Clifton Park's John Craig and John Prendergast are among the locals on the roster.

Open Softball
The Adirondack softball team is 3-1 so far, having beat Hudson Valley (6-3), lost to Long Island (9-6), beat Central (8-2) and beat New York City 9-0.

Meg Volz, a senior to be at Lansingburgh High School, Shannon Jones and Courtney Brinkman, former Troy High players now teammates at Siena College, and Sam Chevalier, a former Columbia High shortstop now playing at Union College, are among the locals on the roster.

Women's Open Basketball
Adirondack's women's basketball team beat Central 70-68, lost to Hudson Valley 77-65 and lost to Long Island 63-36.

Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball coach Gabrielle Doemel is one of the players, along with Watervliet native Paige Colfer and former Catholic Central High School star Olivia DeMarco.

Men's Open Basketball
Tom Baldwin covered Friday's game against Hudson Valley, a game Adirondack lost 77-65.

Adirondack, which fell to 1-1, will try to regroup and plays New York City Saturday at 4 pm.

"It was a tough game for both teams," Adirondack coach Rich Gilooly said. "It was very competitive. In the second half, they got a little rhythm and they hit some shots. We were really making them work."

Brian Hamor (Schenectady) led Adirondack with 19 points while Brian Ledbetter (Schenectady), Samuel Simmons V (Albany) and Jaluan Taylor (Albany) scored 10. Troy’s Damon Blakemore scored two points.

Men's Scholastic Basketball
The Adirondack team lost to Central 81-66 and lost to Hudson Valley 93-77.

Heatly's Alex Heffern and Bishop Maginn's Matt Petruccione are among the local players on the team.

Women's Scholastic Basketball
The Adirondack team lost to Long Island, 56-48 and were doubled up by Central, 102-51.

Albany High players Kelsey Greene and A'montay Giddings-Watson are among the locals on the team.

The Games are set to wrap up on Sunday.
