Catholic Central High School's softball team traveled to Troy High Tuesday in a battle for control of the Big 10 Conference.
As any great softball game does, this one came down to one run.
Kutny drilled a line drive to center field in the fifth inning and she got the sign to try for home plate, sliding in with the game's only run.
CCHS pitcher Maddie Coneys spun a three-hitter to lead the Crusaders to the 1-0 victory.
The Crusaders (10-1, 14-3), who last won the Big 10 crown in 2004, can secure the league title outright with a victory against Albany High on Thursday.
"We already have that feeling of we’ve worked for this - and we’re almost there," Kutny said. "It’s exciting."
The Flying Horses, who finish at 10-2 in the league (11-6 overall), had won the past four Big 10 championships heading into this season.
"They’ve been a big rival and they beat us twice last year," Kutny said. "We were a little worried because we’re here at their home place and it was their senior night. We really had to pull it together and we absolutely did. We did a great job."
Our Chris Fitz Gerald was at the game, so to read his full story, check out Wednesday's edition of The Record.
