Girls basketball regional weekend previews

About Shen: The Lady Plainsmen won their 10th Section II title since 1988 last Saturday with a victory over Suburban Council rival Shaker High. Allie Setter, a junior center, was named the Class AA tournament MVP, but Shen also leans on Marissa Ray and Emily Weber as part of a balanced scoring attack.
About Cicero: Cicero defeated Syracuse rival Corcoran in the Section III title game, 54-52, the second consecutive sectional title for C-NS. 6-foot-3 center Breanna Stewart scored 16 points in the title game for C-NS.

Class A
Averill Park (21-1) vs. Malone-Franklin Academy (20-1, Section X)

About Averill Park: Averill Park won its third Section II Class A championship in five years Saturday afternoon at Hudson Valley Community College, beating an undefeated Holy Names team. They then topped Cortland 59-54 on the strength of nine three-point buckets Tuesday night in Syracuse.

About Malone: Malone, which has won 18 straight games, has won 10 Section X championships since 1996. Kelsey Johnson, a forward, and Brittany Marshall, a guard, were the Northern Athletic Conference's co-Most Valuable Players during Malone's regular season. The Huskies won the New York State Class A title at the end of the 2007-08 season.

About 'Vliet: The Cannoneers won their fourth consecutive Section II title Monday night, defeating Colonial Council rival Mechanicville at Adirondack Community College. Watervliet relies heavily on a pair of freshman in point guard Ailayia Demand and forward Lashana Tolliver. Seniors Nae White and Tierney McGlynn are also crucial to the Cannoneers' success.
About Ogdensburg: OFA defeated Section VII champion Saranac 46-44 in Tuesday's regional semifinal. Megan Morrison scored a game-high 27 points for OFA in the game.

Maple Hill (22-0) vs. Brushton-Moira (20-1, Section X)

About Maple Hill: The Wildcats, winners of three consecutive Section II titles, finally won the Section II Class CC/C playoff game Monday night, topping Greenwich by six points.
Junior center Katie Roth registered a double-double in the first half, finishing with 26 points and 21 rebounds.
About Brushton-Moira: Moira's only loss came to Ogdensburg Free Academy in the Section X overall playoffs. (Since Section X has fewer teams than Section II, teams from different classifications cross over to play each other in an 'overall' tournament).
Chenice Russell and Shayna Russell are the team's leading scorers.
