'Vliet girls use three-ball to top Cohoes; news and notes

Watervliet senior Tierney McGlynn might not show off her shooting skills that often, but all of her teammates were glad she put on a show for a few minutes Friday night against Cohoes.

McGlynn connected on a pair of three-point baskets in the waning moments of the first quarter en route to 11 total points and she also made her made distributing the ball, making eight assists.
She also limited Cohoes' dangerous Bailei Tetrault to 10 points as the Cannoneers scored a convincing victory, 60-37.

"Tierney is probably the best shooter on our team. She’s just not interested," laughed Watervliet head coach Gordie Johnson. "Unfortunately, I wish she was more interested, but she didn’t take a single bad shot tonight. She takes only good shots and she can sense the moment. She knows when we need them and she knows how to finish a game and finish a quarter. I was very impressed with her game tonight."

The Cannoneers appear to be back on track after losing three in a row - to Holy Names, Mechanicville and Lansingburgh - in the middle of January.

"We really didn’t change anything, we just tried to do things better," Johnson said. "We have a good team, we just weren’t doing good things during that stretch. All I can say is, I would rather hit that stretch of games then than now. I think now we’re headed in the right direction. We’re in a good place and I’m happy with the way we’re proceeding. I think this could be an inkling of what’s to come. We’re really psyched about it."

The standings atop the Colonial Council are mighty crowded, as Holy Names tries to lock up the league title Saturday afternoon against the Girls Academy. Watervliet will face some tough teams in the Class B brackets, as Mechanicville is coming on strong and teams like Fonda and Johnstown always seem to carry gaudy won-loss records into the tournament.

Colonial Council
Team League Overall
Holy Names (2, A) 14-0 14-0
Watervliet (20, B) 12-4 12-4
Lansingburgh 10-6
Mechanicville 10-6
Alb. Acad. Girls 9-6 9-6
Cohoes 9-7 9-6

In boys basketball news, our Ryan Kircher caught the Troy High boys at Albany High as the Flying Horses attempted to keep their winning streak, standing at three games, alive.

After committing 21 turnovers in the first half, the Flying Horses had dug themselves and hole and fell to Albany, 53-48.

"We turned it over and when you turn it over you're not going to win games," Troy head coach Jeff Sitterly said. "We played a little bit out of control and we didn't have the energy we had the last two games and I think we kind of hit a wall, but give credit to Albany. They stuck it out and pulled it out at the end."

In other Big 10 action, La Salle hung tight with Bishop Maginn, but the Golden Griffins were just too much, winning 58-53.

Hawthorne Valley topped Heatly 50-48 in the CHVL, dropping the Hornets (8-4, 10-5) further down the league standings.
