Opening round games to watch

A rundown of the best opening round high school basketball games

Check out Thursday's edition of The Record for a column on the boys Class C seeds, a list of the games and some choice photos from the regular season.

Here are some game capsules for some of the more intriguing opening round games set to be played next week.

Class AA boys
B5 Troy High (10-8) at S4 Colonie (10-8)
Wednesday, 7 p.m.
About Troy: The Flying Horses made a late-season surge, beating Bishop Maginn and Schenectady in successive games, but stumbled a bit down the stretch, dropping games at Albany and Amsterdam.
Freshman center Javion Ogunyemmi joins sophomores Greg Williams and Kareem Brown in the frontcourt and all stand 6-foot-5 or higher. Junior Elijah Jenkins is a rock at the point guard position and Raheem Felder, a sophomore, plays with passion at the two-guard spot.
About Colonie: The Raiders finished one point behind Averill Park in the Suburban Council’s South Division. Seniors Mike Branche and Onome Okpodu provide scoring inside and Jordan Meeks and Frankie Lombardi are proficient from long range.
The question: Can Troy’s young talent match up against Colonie’s battle-tested seniors?

Class C boys
9 Hoosic Valley (13-5) at 8 Lake George (13-4)
Wednesday, 7 p.m.
About Hoosic Valley: Kyle Pallozzi finished the regular season as the Wasaren League’s scoring leader, pouring in more than 17 points a game. The Indians were the only team to top Hoosick Falls in league play this season and also topped Class D’s No. 1, Argyle, by 30 points in the Scots’ Christmas Tournament.
About Lake George: The Warriors are led by a pair of towering junior forwards, Matt McGowan (6-foot-6) and Alex Hladik (6-foot-4). Those two have accounted for 56.2% of Lake George’s scoring output this season.
The question: Can Hoosic Valley’s smothering man-to-man defense counter Lake George’s height and home court advantages?

Class D boys
9 Fort Ann (9-6, 9-9) at 8 Heatly (8-6, 10-7)
Tuesday, 7 p.m.
About Fort Ann: The Cardinals are fans of the three-ball, as leading scorers Robert Sprague, Jim Shevy and Derek Durkee have combined to make 64 three-point field goals this season. New Lebanon, which split the season series with Heatly in the CHVL, including an 11-point win over the Hornets, scored a 53-38 victory over Fort Ann in December.
About Heatly: The Hornets are also proficient from behind the three-point stripe, as cousins Alex Heffern (37) and Peter Heffern (32) lead the team in treys. Heatly won the CHVL regular season title and advanced to the Section II Class D championship game, falling to Sharon Springs.
The question: Can Fort Ann match the Hornets tit-for-tat in the three-point shooting game?

Class B girls
12 Greenville (9-9, 9-9) at 5 Cohoes (10-8, 10-8)
Wednesday, 6 p.m.
About Greenville: The Spartans finished fifth in a crowded race atop the Patroon Conference. TaylorAnne Young is the team’s leading scorer at just under 10 points per game, but Bonnie Harvey, a three-point threat, isn’t far behind, scoring 8.6 per game.
About Cohoes: Bailei Tetrault is one of the area’s best ball-handlers and will certainly be Greenville’s biggest defensive target. My’Asia Alston can thrive if Tetrault is doubled, but the Tigers will also need forwards Betsy Santoro and Danielle Beauchamp to contribute if they wish to make a run in the Bs.
The question: If Greenville shuts down Tetrault and Alston, who will step up for Cohoes?
