Knights hang on for Colonial victory

Drake scored nine points off the bench and sparked a 28-2 Lansingburgh rally in the second quarter, but the Cannoneers fought back in the second half, drawing to within two points on the final play of the game.

A Lansingburgh player makes a leaping shot over Watervliet's Christian Ashline during the first half of Tuesday's game. Ashline scored eight points in the final minute of the game, drawing the Cannoneers within two points after they had allowed 22 consecutive points to Lansingburgh in the second quarter.

Voorheesville, which defeated Cohoes Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in the Colonial Council, travels to Lansingburgh Friday night for a first place showdown.

Lansingburgh senior center Tyler Hammett looks to make a move on Watervliet's Griffin Kelly (10). Hammett, the anchor of the Knights' 2-3 defense, scored six points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

With Hammett in the middle, the Knights look a lot like the Syracuse University teams that featured Craig Forth, especially with Salaam Knight and Sajae Pryor serving as the Carmelo Anthony-types on the outside.

Watervliet, however, started to pick that apart in the second half as Cannoneers point guard Devonte Gleason, who scored all of his 17 points after halftime, started driving and kicking, which stretched the zone to its breaking point. Watervliet also picked up the pace and played much better as a pressing, up-tempo type of team.
