Lansingburgh's Tobias headed to state meet; Tuesday's diamond updates

Lansingburgh High School junior Alney Tobias, shown here winning the 800m race at this year's Eddy Meet at Union College in May, posted personal records in the 800m and 1600m races in last week's state qualifiers in Johnstown and will represent Section II this weekend at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Check out Jeff Scott's stories here for more on the Section II qualifier at Johnstown.

We'll also have more on Tobias' preparation for the state meet later this week in The Record.

In softball action today, Columbia defeated Liverpool 3-0, advancing to Saturday's Final Four in Waterloo.
Meg Hallenbeck delivered a two-run double in the second inning, scoring Jena Servidone and Meg Bailey, and it was Bailey who drove in the game winning run an inning later on a sacrifice fly to lift the Columbia High School softball team to a 3-2 victory over Section III champion Liverpool in a Class AA regional title game at Gillette Road Field.
Columbia (20-6) junior Jena Servidone pitched a four-hitter, struck out eight Liverpool batters and did not allow an earned run. Liverpool (21-5) scored both of its runs on a passed ball and throwing error in the second inning.
The Blue Devils advance to Saturday’s New York State semifinal game against Section V champion Fairport (24-2). The Class AA semifinal at Waterloo High School will begin at 9 a.m. The Class AA championship game, also at Waterloo High School, will be played at 1:30 p.m.

Columbia's baseball team is also bound for the Final Four in Binghamton. They'll be playing Clarence at NYSEG Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Maple Hill's game against Ticonderoga was rained out on Tuesday and will be made up Wednesday at SUNY-Plattsburgh.

We'll be covering Hoosick Falls' journey toward its first regional title since 1987 Wednesday afternoon in Queensbury at the Adirondack Sports Dome and there will be a story on Panthers freshman pitcher Rachel Quackenbush in Wednesday morning's edition of The Record.
