Local roundup, Weds., Oct. 13
Our Andrew Santillo covered the Section II Class B boys soccer semifinals Wednesday afternoon in Glens Falls. For his full story, check out Thursday's edition of The Record. Here is an excerpt:
GLENS FALLS -- If you’re a betting man, there would be no better lock than backing the Maple Hill High School boys soccer team in the postseason.
The classification may change from year to year, but the Wildcats have a regular seat set at the final table of the Section II playoffs.
Under veteran coach Dan Gillespie, Maple Hill has won a sectional title nine of the last 10 seasons and even more incredibly, the Wildcats have claimed a piece of Section II hardware 17 times in the past 22 years (finishing second in 1999 & ’91).
The players change, but the success remains the same.
On Tuesday, junior Steven Sepowski recorded a hat trick and fellow junior Jakob Yeager added two goals as Maple Hill defeated Chatham 5-2 in a Class B semifinal at Morse Field.
"There are always high expectations," Sepowski said. "We try to do our best every year."
Maple Hill has won 11 Class C titles and four more at the Class CC level since 1988.
This is the team’s first crack at Class B and so far the Wildcats (18-1-0) haven’t missed a beat.
"We’ve had a good program," Gillespie said. "We’ve been very lucky. The kids have always played hard and I have good coaches under me in the youth programs. It’s a sport that we’ve done really well at."
