Since the 2010 high school football season begins this Thursday when Colonie takes on Shaker in the annual battle for the Town of Colonie Cup, let's have a chat to discuss what you think will happen this year.

Well, the live chat idea was a disaster tonight, since the ValleyCats don't have adequate accommodations for busy press events like opening day, but it wound up being a great game for the 'Cats.

I'll have a brief story on right fielder Michael Kvasnicka in Saturday's paper. He hit a home run on the first pitch he saw in the first inning - it was the first pitch he saw in professional baseball.

In his second at-bat, he also hit the first pitch for a double to left field. Kvasnicka, the No. 33 overall pick in the 2010 First Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros out of the University of Minnesota, will be relied on to provide some pop for the 'Cats in 2010.



Ed Weaver will have the game story in Saturday's paper, and the rest of the Cats' home games this season, so be sure to look for that, too.

I most likely won't be covering the 'Cats again this season, but it's always an entertaining evening for Capital Region sports fans in a pretty great venue.

A few corrections to the original brackets were made in an email version sent to us by Section II chairman Cathy Allen. Corrections have been made to the digital versions above:
Class AA - Troy vs. Colonie now (yet again) 3 p.m. at Veeder. CCHS/Guilderland game will be played at 3 p.m. at Clifton Common. Semifinals will be played on June 2.
Class A - Finals at Clifton Common, of course.
Class B - no changes.
Class CC - Hoosick Falls plays at 3:45 at the Dome Wednesday. Voorheesville/Chatham game now at 3 p.m. at Veeder.
Class C - no changes.

Sectional admission: Tickets to opening round and quarterfinal baseball and softball games is $3. For semifinal and championship games, admission is $6.

Baseball
Class AA: La Salle, Shenendehowa and Christian Brothers Academy are likely to be seeded 1-2-3 in some order. Troy High and Catholic Central posted strong regular seasons in the Big 10 and Suburban Council stalwarts Saratoga Springs, Niskayuna, Colonie and Guilderland also cannot be counted out.
Team to watch: Shaker. The Blue Bison quietly posted 13 wins in the Suburban Council and have a deep pitching rotation.
Class A: Schalmont and Ichabod Crane have made cases for the No. 1 seed, but the teams from South Glens Falls and Glens Falls, as well as Suburban Council entries Averill Park and Burnt Hills, could all be dangerous in a wide-open field.
Team to watch: Lansingburgh. The Knights have had a number of injuries down the stretch, but are hoping to be healthy for the playoffs.
Class B: Spa Catholic and Granville will be two of the top teams in the Class B bracket. Albany Academy might be a year away from doing something special, but the Cadets are also in position to make a run.
Team to watch: Mechanicville. The Red Raiders have a solid mix of hitting and pitching, but does Mechanicville have the confidence under pressure to excel in the postseason?
Class CC: Chatham was one of the top teams in the Patroon Conference this season and could earn one of the top seeds. Voorheesville was competitive against much larger schools in the Colonial Council, so keep an eye on the Blackbirds.
Team to watch: Hoosick Falls. The Panthers were expected to finish in the middle of the pack in the Wasaren League, but wound up winning a share of the regular season title. Will the magical run continue?
Class C: Greenwich has the pitching and Fort Plain has the experience, and the teams might well meet in the Class C final.
Team to watch: Waterford-Halfmoon. The Fordians played in the Section II title game a season ago, but only one starter – Zac Lennon – returns.
Class D: Loudonville Christian and Germantown battled it out for the CHVL title (Germantown won) and both will be contenders here, although they’ll face stiff competition from some of the Adirondack League’s finest.

Softball
Class AA: Shenendehowa, undefeated at 20-0, will be the No. 1 seed in the Section II tournament and the team favored to win it all. Bethlehem is likely to be the No. 2 seed and will be a strong competitor. Big 10 champion Catholic Central and runner-up Troy High will also figure into the race, as will Columbia, Shaker and Saratoga Springs.
Team to watch: Columbia. The defending champion Blue Devils have had their share of struggles this season, but they’ve got one of the area’s top pitchers in Jena Servidone.
Class A: South Glens Falls, a perennial favorite in the Class A bracket, is the odds-on favorite to snag the No. 1 seed. Ichabod Crane was ranked No. 19 in the latest New York State poll.
Team to watch: Lansingburgh. The Lady Knights have a new pitcher in Sam Woitkoski, but they return most of the players in a powerful lineup that can score runs at will.
Class B: It’s a three-team race between Mechanicville, Cohoes and Taconic Hills, but Schuylerville could be a dark horse.
Team to watch: Cohoes. Will all of the Tigers’ non-league games and scrimmages against top-flight competition pay off yet again in the postseason?
Class CC: Hoosick Falls and Lake George will likely net the top two seeds and they are the favorites to meet in the championship game.
Team to watch: Chatham. The Panthers had a successful season in the Patroon Conference, but will that carry over to the playoffs?
Class C: Duanesburg and Loudonville Christian are set to take the top seeds after piling up the wins in the regular season.
Team to watch: Waterford-Halfmoon. The Lady Fordians have won plenty of games in the CHVL recently and played in the Class C title game a season ago.
Class D: Hartford, Fort Ann and Germantown were all ranked in the top 13 in the latest New York State poll.

(1) Argyle vs. (2) Germantown, 1 p.m.

About Argyle: The Scots, a Washington County team, are sure to have a large delegation of fans in the Civic Center Sunday. Will that help them against an athletic, perimeter-oriented Germantown team?
About Germantown: The Clippers have had great success in the CHVL in recent years, but the CHVL has not won a Section II title in quite some time. Will this be the year?

Class C

(1) Maple Hill vs. (2) Hoosick Falls, 2:45 p.m.

About Maple Hill: The Wildcats are defending Section II Class C champions (they won the CC bracket and a CC/C playoff last year) and played twice more in the Civic Center after that in the New York State Final Four. They have, as is widely regarded among the basketball establishment in Section II, the best collective starting five among the small-school teams. A new hero seems to emerge every night for them. Chris Despart did the trick in a tough semifinal victory over Schoharie, sinking a pair of treys on a 20-0 run. Who steps up for the Wildcats Sunday afternoon? And how raucous are the Castleton Crazies?
About Hoosick Falls: The Panthers are the epitome of a Wasaren League team. Solid and gritty man-to-man defense is their biggest strength. Kevin McMahon is their unparalleled shot-taking big man on offense, capable of driving to the hoop or popping outside shots all day long. How do the Wildcats defend him? Do they try a mix of man and zone, or do they stick with their old standby, the 2-3? The Panthers also do not have a lot of experience in the Civic Center, having last won a Section II title in 1984.

Class B

(1) Fonda-Fultonville vs. (2) Watervliet, 4:30 p.m.

About Fonda: The Braves (21-0) are the only undefeated team remaining in Section II, but they'll surely get their toughest test from Watervliet Sunday afternoon. Brandon Mercado was a Section II Class B All-Tournament selection a season ago and remains one of Fonda's biggest threats.
About Watervliet: The Cannoneers have been firing at will ever since Jordan Gleason found a home in the starting lineup in their opening round game against Stillwater. Gleason, a freshman, is the younger brother of 'Vliet's junior point guard Devonte Gleason.
Watervliet hasn't been challenged in the postseason so far, posting blowouts over Stillwater, Broadalbin and Schenectady Christian. Can the Cannoneers adjust to a tight game on a big stage? Can players like Nick Durocher and Kevin Pontore provide enough leadership to carry them to the school's first Section II title since the 2006-07 season?

Class A

(1) Lansingburgh vs. (7) Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 6:15 p.m.

About Lansingburgh: The Knights are making their first title game appearance ever, but they were well-prepared for the pressure in a semifinal round game against Ichabod Crane.
Lansingburgh head coach Guy DiBacco made sure his guys got there early and took it easy, watching the early game together as a team. Will watching Colonial Council rival Watervliet help them keep their nerves?
Can Sajae Pryor and Salaam Knight find a way to slice through the Burnt Hills defense? Burnt Hills head coach George Dudas always does a good job of designing defenses that confuse the other team.
About Burnt Hills: The Spartans have made a surprising run to the finals, topping South Glens Falls, the No. 2 seed, in the quarters and No. 6 Gloversville in the semis. Forwards Jacob Myers and Zach Morton will certainly be frustrating to Lansingburgh's senior center Tyler Hammett. The man-to-man battle between BH-BL point guard Keaton Flint and Lansingburgh's Alex Drake is going to be interesting to watch.

Tuesday, March 9
Times Union Center, Albany
Class AA
(B1) Christian Brothers Academy vs. (S1) Shenendehowa, 7 p.m.

About CBA: The Brothers were the class of the Big 10 this season and they've dispatched Troy and Albany High en route to the championship game, their eighth consecutive appearance in Section II's biggest of games. Kam Ritter is their main playmaker, but the Brothers have depth off the bench and a roster full of players willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
About Shen: Matt Miner, the Suburban Council MVP, is the Plainsmen's biggest weapon. He'll be playing D-II basketball for former HVCC coach Andre Cook next season in Texas.
