Miller set to make pro debut; Stauffer wins for Pads

A pair of former Section II standouts are making a name for themselves on the professional level, so let's take a timeout to check into their accomplishments.

Shawn Miller was 23-0 as an amateur and will be taking on Zaid Malik (0-2) of Cleveland, Ohio in a light heavyweight clash.

An accomplished football (Hudson Valley Community College and Albany Conquest) and baseball (University of West Virginia) player, Miller is finally settling into the family business - pro boxing.

Shannon, in his 17th year of practicing the sweet science, is 16-4 and will also fight on Friday night - the first time, obviously, the two have appeared on the same card.

For more on how they'll spend Friday morning preparing for the big fight, check out Friday's edition of The Record.

"It's a good win," said the right-handed Stauffer to the Associated Press, who missed the entire 2008 season after having shoulder surgery. "We battled. It made it a lot easier to pitch when they put those runs on the board. I was feeling a lot more confident

The fourth overall pick in the 2003 Major League draft, Stauffer has been beset by injuries since making his debut in 2005. But it all started for him in the Capital Region.
Stauffer pitched on the high school level for the Spa Catholic Saints and in the summers, pitched for the South Troy Dodgers. He took them to the 2000 Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, New Mexico and a second-place finish overall.
The Dodgers are headed back to the World Series in 2009 - their fourth trip this decade.

Here are Stauffer's stats from his time with the Dodgers:
