Troy High captures first Big 10 soccer title in 16 years

TROY -- For the first time in 16 years, the Troy High boys soccer team can claim as title: Big 10 Conference champion.

Jordan Schroeder, who had not scored a goal all season, hit the back of the net with five seconds left in regulation as the Flying Horses posted a 2-1 victory over Albany High Monday afternoon, clinching the Big 10 regular season title outright over the Falcons.

"This is just crazy. My adrenaline is pumping like crazy," said Schroeder. "We had some opportunities, especially in the second half, and we started to get a little frustrated because we weren’t putting anything through, but we finally got one. It’s a tremendous feeling. This is a great way to win the league. I couldn’t dream of a better way to win it."

With the win, Troy (14-0-0 Big 10, 15-0-0 overall) clinched a perfect regular season and its first Big 10 championship since 1994. The Flying Horses have been dominant all season, outscoring their opponents by a combined margin of 50-3.

"It’s simply been a remarkable season so far and these kids deserve all the praise in the world for this," Troy head coach Michael Murnane said. "We set the foundation last year by finishing second in the league and this year we set a goal of taking that next step and we achieved that."

"Albany gave us a tough game last week (also a 2-1 Troy victory)," Murnane said. "Our schedule has really helped us get ready for sectionals. We’ve had our three toughest games of the season - the two with Albany and one against La Salle - as our final three games of the regular season. That helps us build up momentum and gives us a taste of how tough the playoffs are going to be."

Check back on the blog Tuesday, as I will post the Section II boys and girls soccer brackets as soon as they're released. Troy will be hosting the Suburban Council's No. 9 seed in an opening round Class AA game later this week.

"We set our goals high for this season and our first thing was to win the Big 10," Schroeder said. "It’s great to get that done. Now we have to turn our focus to the playoffs and prepare to step it up even more. It’s going to be a great challenge and a lot of fun."
